Tubular chassis were used prior to the flat steel ones.Springs were used in the late 30`s to the early 60`s. It was called Morris springing and with some of them the handle/chassis went all the way round. The end nearest the hood was chromed and this was called the butlers handle. As the better off would have the pram taken up the steps by nanny and the butler. Now who knew that little factlet?

That really depends on the make of pram. S/x very little. Millson could be up to £250 depending on rarity.

No wonder kids are allergic to the world in which we live... they put in a sterile bubble and then can't cope with what life throws at them.... and it gets worse each day !!! Lord knows how the human race has survived so long!!!

Oh that is interesting David. I didn't know that I had a marmet when I was a babe many moons ago... and I was so disappointed when I studied the photos to see it had that complete up and under chassis... I felt it detracted from the overall line of the pram but from what you say it must have been one for the butler... not that we ever had a butler!!! LOL I think my pram was a marmet queen but the early model with that design ... need to find some better pictures... Haven't got any that show it really well.

For those of you wondering what on earth Fi is on about, she collected my pram wreck from the seller and it did indeed stink to high heavens. Well beyond the call of friendship! The pram cushions had to be sacrificed as they were growing green slime and all the upholstery had to be removed. The wheels are very rusty and will have to be rechromed. But she is gradually turning back into the graceful lady she once was....

Fascinating stuff, do you know the Lomond by Marmet? I have just unearthed one and am going to try and do it up, my first project. I didn't know it was sacrilege to put the sx hood on the marmet, obviously committed a faux pas. Apols Any info would be gratefully recve and I will tell my neice about your pedigree, is it available for viewing on the website at all? By the way with the pram was an old canopy, still boxed but it has gone a funny colour lie coffee, it has deep fringing and I dont want to wash it as it might affect the fringing, what can you all suggest plse. tks lini x

Try gentle hand wash, let it soak in soapy water with some vanish added, usually works a treat.

Osnath is a good make of pram. As the Marmet Queen they hold their prices, `if they are of the right model`. There are some low prams that Osnath made which do not. Do you know the origin of the name Osnath?

You see my wife was a nanny by profession and worked in houses with butlers, maids, under house-maids etc.,working for the lords and ladies and landed gentry of many countries. So she speaks from experience.

Hi Suze, I think you may be right in holding back on investing in something which is not yours. I find the comment about moulds living in the upholstery quite worrying, I would never expose a newborn to that. Even used once mattresses are being thrown away, I do wonder if that is really going too far though. Jackie has given good advice re the cost of a pram, idiots like me will pay too much and live to regret it. I cringe when I think of what I paid and what I got for my money. Send me the shop email and I will send you my home phone number if you want to hear a cautionary tale!

Hi Jackie, When first looking for my 'big pram' a Wedgewood was being sold in Ashington. It was gorgeous. I held back because I had no idea of its value. Do they come up very often? Why did you let yours go?
