thinking about this mould my pref would be to start again, but you can get a product from a camping shop which I have used on tents.
I once stupidly put away a tent which had been packed a little damp. Ayear later, on holiday we had the job of sponging off all the mould with this product. It kills all the spores and gets rid of the smell. It was some years ago but I expect they still sell it, what about Milton, do they still make that? It is supposed to kill mould spores isnt it? doesnt bleach do the job just as well, although obviously you wouldnt be able to use it where fabric was involved. Lini x

Hi Twinnylinnie,
Now that you have your beautiful Lomand why not just enjoy doing what you can, spend what you can afford and have a very enjoyable learning experience ? As another child of the fifties I have been whisked back in time whilst removing rust, scrubbing tyres etc. It is amazing how satisfying it is. I think we novices would need a lot more experience/knowledge before trying to make anything at this game.

sorry Lini..was replying to your earlier message. Do not know anything much about killing moulds, had it in secondary glazing years ago and bleach did not work.

hi rookieprammie, Yes you are right, and who can put a price on the enjoyment to be had from restoring something you can take a pride in, but having said that I want to be sensible and not throw money away. I am after all a yorkshire gal and we want 12 pence to our shilling! lini x

Hi Rookieprammie
My email is [Log in to view email] I'd love to chat with you, I'm going to see an Ebay pram exactly like the one I am dubious about tomorrow morning, I will have to wait for the auction to run but at least I will have seen it and it is in Farnham, 20 minutes away!It is apparently ready to go bar the mattress!
There is another one in Sutton, 30 minutes away, I have emailed them as well.
I guess the more you see the better!

Judging by some of the stories on this thread, viewing ebay prams is pref. Getting one which needs loads of work seems to be a hard way of doing it, unless you have the bits and the contacts, which I suppose takes ages to build up. Rather like buying ahouse, you buy it cos it looks nice and have dreams of renovating it and then you put most of it in a skip. By the time I have bought new everything for this Lomond it will not be original so I have decided to do it up and make do. Hope your viewing goes well, enjoy! Lini x

The one jelly mould on my pram isn't fixed to the nut as it turns round separately. Do these just screw directly into the rod?

It certainly was the Ashton Brothers.
Another fairly unknown fact is that they used ground cuttle fish bone to smooth down each coat applied to their prams. They put on 11 coats.

Oh that is interesting David.... although now budgies all over the prammie world will be having their cuttlefish stolen so that prammies can grind it down to make a paste for sanding down their prams!!!
I guess it makes an incredibly fine abrasive. Was cuttlefish a commonly used abrasive do you know? Where where they based? Was it a coastal region?

I have some jelly moulds off 1960's Silver Stream. One of them the nut came off the mould but the others are attached I got other ones so you are welcome to these if you want to try them ans see if they fit. I fiited the new ones with a spanner.

Oh, thank you for that, how much do you want for them? Are they the same as the ones on Jackie's photograph?

You've probably seen that jimjams said she will send me some jelly moulds she has to see if they'll fit. If they don't and you haven't yet put yours on eBay then I'll try them next but please don't wait if you want to put them on eBay. I don't see why I (that is, my husband!) can't make them fit!
Thanks.

Re the cuttlefish story from David, we could do with the ink as well to dye all these faded aprons that are posing so many problems, That's a thought, indelible ink, it wont fade, rub off or go hard. I suppose you could water it down to make it go further. It's used to sign the marriage registers and it last hundreds of years so maybe its worth a try, has anyone actually used it for renovating a hood? It comes in all the right colours and can be mixed to match and lengthened with water Maybe it would work, or am I being a silly billy! lini x
