Hi Lini.
Didn't get to mend my pram, but guess what, Grandbaby Bethany was 'RIGHT' she didn't get her words wrong in with what she helped to carry in her schools Harvest Festival. The church was beautifully decorated with fruit, vegetables, flowers, ears of oats and wheat and with ivy around all the pillars. All the children looked lovely. The girls carried baskets of fruit and had flowers in their hair, whilst the boys wore their uniforms with red sashes and carried small bunches of oats.
I have attached a photo of Beth and the infamous 'HAYRICK'

Hi Lini.
I thought once my children had grown up I would be free of processions etc, but to be honesr, I am enjoying them just as much. Ah five more grandbabies to go.....
By the way, what make is your pram in your photo. Mum had one (marmet 1950) similar in looks, it had a raise and lower back rest and the foot area could be lowered to make into a buggy type pram.

Hi Cathy.
Thanks for your post. I was bursting with pride watching her and the other children processing round the church. you cann't believe how much hard work and dedication goes into harvest festival and other occassions, from the priest, parishiners, teachers and head master and last but not least the children who take great pride in what they are doing.
Is'nt it like the 'Marie Seleste' on the site tonight. It's times like these that 'homely' chit chat makes the site a friendly 'comfort'

Chriss, I'm sure a huge amount of work goes into getting your Harvest Festival organized. Well worth it though. Kathy

Jen, Sorry about this. My e mail service provider has had problems. It takes ages for messages to get through and then suddenly a pile will appear all at once. I have made a complaint but it just depends. Some days its OK but others it's dreadful. Do you want to send them to me again, the last few days have been better?

I am attaching the photo of the cleaned and resprayed Churchill. Its a lovely little pram. It looks like a midget next to my Millson Cavendish - a bit like Little and Large - but it is so beautiful. The pram is 20 ins wide and 40 ins long so it isn't too small.

Next stop, down to the sign painter who is going to do the tramlines and then onto the Car Medic, who will look at the split in the hood.
It's progressing nicely but I still don't know what model it is. I have contacted the Museum of Transport in Glasgow but no answer yet.

Love - Sian

Hi Chris, My avatar pram is a Royale, about late 50's early 60's, is a lovely compact pram with a fold over handle and four arm marimo hood in lovely condition. I have just listed it as I need to sell it as I have to move out while the subsidence work is carried out. I dont want to have to put it into storage and will not have room where I am going. I really like Royale prams, they are very well made I think.
I'm back to Yorkshire on Thursday so will be offline for most of the time xlinii

Hi Chris, Its subsidence work, they have been monitoring it for years and trying to sort out rafting works and underpinning and other un glamourous stuff like that. It looks like it will be cheaper and better to knock down the extension and start again so I will be out of the house for at least 6 months and probably much longer. Everything has to be packed and stored, hence the need to sell the pram. I am dreading it!!

Oh poor you Linnni.
It seems it never rains but it pours. Are you covered by insurance, or are you having to pay for it all yourself? I hope not.
Good luck anyway, I shall be thinking about you. Just a thought, are there no family or friends who could store the pram for you, oh silly me, I forgot you said your new house is going to be smaller. Is this the house with subsidence, or the one your living in now. I'm a bit confused, nothing new for me (LOL).

Im moving to a flat with stairs. The insurance is sorting it all but my word are they dragging it out!! They have had two lots of structural engineers on it and it is fraught with problems, its a 1640's timber framed house sitting on a culverted stream so lots of water to deal with. Listed building officer has just given the go ahead to knock down the affected part and rebuild as the underpinning is too complicated and will cost a kings ransom. Luckily the main part of the building is fine, just the kitchen and bathroom extension which is affected and they were added much later. No one wants to know about the prams..they all think I should be certified. x lini

Oh Linni I really feel for you. as to all the others, give them a few more years and they will change their tune, that it is them that are certifiable, especially when they realise the 'inheritance' they have lost LOL.
Keep me posted as to your renivations, hope there will be a good 'housewarming' eventually.

Linni, if it is just a question of storing the pram I'll bet there's a prammie out there who would love to look after her till you are back in your house. I'm a long way from your Watford home, but I would happily look after the Royale till you can have her back home.

Hi Jackie and Elaine, Thanks for the very kind offers to rehome my pram, but I willl be selling the cottage after the building work which could take up to a year and then who knows how long it will take to sell. I could keep it in my Yorkshirer place but its damp in the winter which wont do the chrome or anything else any good. I feel its time to do some down sizing on all fronts, time to move on. I really appreciate your kindness in offering though, thankyou x lini

Hi Linni.
What kind and caring people are on this site. I have said it before and I will hopefully keep on saying this.
The help people offer each other and lets not forget for the most part we are complete strangers with one common interest 'our prams',which in my mind, sets this site apart from many others. We share our common interest in many different ways, from problem solving names of different types of prams, helping with issues of how to repair them, and just sharing memories about them. And then there is the social side, were people for the most part support and help with offers of help and words of comfort when like most 'mortals' we come accross the highs and lows of life which can effect our daily lives (plus our precious time we have for our prams).
So thankyou all prammies for this warm site.

SHELLY/KATHY:

I have had a reply from the Glasgow Transport Museum, who have several Churchill prams in their collection. Neil Symington the curator has appealed for information or memorabilia on the company and has prepared a fact sheet.

They are preparing to move all their exhibits to a new museum building in 2011 and are working on a Churchill pram display for the new space. Neil says they only have one Churchill brochure from the 70's but they have made contact with several ex employees'.

Below is the text of the sheet -

"H. Churchill and Sons

A brief history researched and collated by Museum of Transport , Glasgow , 2009.

Original Company Outline

Founded: 1927 May 30th -13 Norfolk Street , Gorbals Cross
Founders: Robert Churchill and Son, Alf

Production: Hand built coach prams, 1-2 a week

Sales: Sales were through large wholesale outlets, none direct to
public, this included Scottish Co-operative Stores

New Premises: Company move to 90 Commerce Street in 1949.
This was after two other brothers joined the firm and
production was up to 50 prams a week. Premises listed
as 94-96 in Postal Directories from 1952-1979).

Production: Production grew with new location. Company employed
70 people in late 1960s and were producing
nearly 10,000 prams a year along with 3,000 dolls prams.

However, Churchill was not a large company compared to
other pram producers (Wilson, Pedigree)

Decline: Late 1960s and 1970s saw decline in company and
production, due to changes in pram/stroller
ownership.More car ownership meant changes in what
was needed. It appears Churchill’s did
not adapt quickly enough to these changes. In addition,
Churchill’s was a hand built, local, small firm which could
not compete with the larger British companies or cheaper
imported prams/strollers.

Last pram built: September 1981

Company folded: March 1982, last pram builder in Scotland

Information above from: Daily Record, Thursday March 11th 1982, Glasgow Postal Directories, Correspondence with pram experts and Churchill family members

Information from former employees at Churchill’s (working in late 1960s)

- All pram frames and body work were hand made

- 10 people worked on bodywork, 8 ladies worked on textiles, 3 people
spray painting, 3 people construction and assembly

- Different painting stages meant that it took about 4 days to paint
one pram

- A third of all Churchill pram paint colours supplied by Craig & Rose
(based at Dixon Blazes, Glasgow)

- There would be about 20-28 bodies in the racks and about 10 dolls
bodies waiting to be painted

- Made about 30 prams a day

- Used air guns, or staples, to build pram – made of thin plywood to
bend easily. All designs were of plywood.

- Building was three/four stories high. Prams brought up by human
chain to different floors. This had to go via the fire escape of the
outside of the building. Everyone had to take part in moving prams.
Bodies were built then put onto racks. Then once or twice a week
when the weather was good the prams were moved outside

- Only the body work was made in house, wheels etc. supplied by other
companies. "

Please note the refference to Churchill pram experts, it would be interesting to hear from those experts.

If anyone wants me to forward the lnformation sheet to them, please e mail me.
