Hi Lynn and those of you wanting to know about wheels fitting other chassis.

If I tell you that old SilverCross wheels won't fit new SilverCross prams you can see the problem! The only way is to try them on the chassis you want to use. I've taken wheels off an early 1950s SilverCross and they don't fit newer models but they will fit other makes, it all depends on the width of the axle. Sometimes the hubs are wider than the axle and obviously they won't do, but if you have a wheel which fits the axle but leaves a lot of space before you put the split pin in, then just pack the space on either side of the wheel with washers, and also make sure you use plenty of grease when you put wheels back on, and never put wheels back on a rusty axle, always sandpaper them down and use plenty of grease before you put the wheels back on.

My Bird of Paradise has 24" wheels which I bought on ebay, I have no idea what pram they came off, and the 18" wheels are off a Swan pram but they fit so I'm happy!

Sometimes you will find a sort of "knob" at the end of an axle. This will mean that you need quick release wheels which slide over the knob and click into place, no other wheels will fit that axle because there is nothing to stop them falling off. I found this out very early on in my collecting days when I bought a pram from someone in Emsworth and when the lady wheeled it out of the house the wheels just fell off. She said, oh dear, they just need the split pins putting back in - Dopey Daisy here believed her!!! I still have that chassis, it reminds me to check things out a bit more carefully.

More often than not, axles have the little hole at the end which takes the split pin and these are the easiest to find wheels for, the only problem could be that sometimes the rod used for the axle is a bigger diameter, but they are few and far between.

Hope this helps.

Pat

Marge, did you manage to get your wheels off? Hope you have had success. Judith

Elaine, I love your Streng pram! Can you take a photo of the side of the body at eye level? I'd love to see more of the pattern on it. Kathy

H Pat, wanted to run this one by you to see what you think about it.
I was looking at the wheel i had in the washer, and i thought what a waste to throw it out as i didn't have anything else it fitted and i just wanted the tyre from it for another pram.Thing is, it is in good nick.
Then i came up with this one, if i de spoked the wheels changed the middles from SX middles and put them back together again,USING THE OSNATH MIDDLES it should then fit on the osnath? what do you think? jen

hi Pat i got some wheels for my york but it has a bigger axle with a nut,i did not notice this untill the hub caps were taken off even through the frame is the same as my duram rose in my pic , still they will do another pram some time, the york wheels i might get rechromed but for now its one of my rally prams. i always look now before i buy wheels as untill you take them off and look at the axle you cannot be sure about the fit, still you learn more as the yrs tick by , and thanks for the info you gave me about my hooding fabric Angela

Elaine, does your pram have a heavy woven fabric? I didn't realize that it had the cane as part of the design. Many of the older Gessleins have something similar. Kathy

Hi Jen. i know we talked about this earlier, but i have just thought, the hub would have to have the same ammount of holes so that the same spoke pattern could be followed ? AND being new to this, do they differ?
or are they all bog standard ? It would certainly make things sooo much easier if this is the case. Hope Pat has the answer!
