I have a powermax 185 gas heating boiler. There are two lights on the control pannel. When the boiler is burning, the green one is lit. If the red light is ignited, the boiler is locked out.

The red light was ignited three days ago, I followed the instructions on the Manual to turn off the boiler for serveral minutes and then turn it on, the boiler worked again and the green light was lit. Hot water was provided but the radiator was not very hot (I set the room temperature as 25 degree).

But today the red light was lit for three times. After the boiler was burning for about fifteen minutes, the red light was ignited. I guess there is something wrong with the boiler but do not know what are the causes that make the red light switch on so frequently. I do not believe turning the boiler off and on, off and on constantly is a wise decision.

Any suggestions or help? Thanks!

Annie, sorry to be vague. I have considerable experience with boilers but not with the Powermax range. It seems that the boiler is overheating, and protecting itself by shutting down.

I suggest you contact the manufacturer's support dept and let them advise. Be sure to tell them it takes 15 mins before it trips-out, as this is relevant, as is the fact that the radiator(s) don't get very hot.

If all else fails try a posting on DIYnot.co.uk, lots of helpful boiler mechanics there most days.

I have a similar problem with the powermax in that following lengthy use the red light comes on, reset as per instructions the green light comes on, this occurred again after 24 hours, same procedure for reset, it will be interesting to see if it gets worse.
I note Sean you mention PCB (printed circuit board?), gas valve/pressure switch.
Do you think it could be related to low input gas pressure as the problem has hap;ened twice both times first thing in the morning at approx 0600.

Hi Sean,

Thank you very much for the help.

The boiler worked normally for a couple of days. But today the red light was illuminated again. I found that after the boiler burned for about 15 mins, the water tank may be full and the hot water began to flow into the radiators, in that case, the boiler would stop burning and the red light appeared.

So how could I check whether it is the PCB problem or the gas valve is pressured? Any suggestions?

Hi I have a Powermax 185 boiler. I had a problem with a radiator the other day and lost loads of water. Now the boiler wont ignite and I dont have any hot water or heating. Any ideas ?
I also need the user instructions for it as I have never had any so if you know where I can download a copy I would be more than grateful.
Thanks.

I also have the powermax 185 boiler, we have had several plumbing companies come and look at ours as we also have the dreaded RED light problem, ours locks out at an average of 20 times per day. It started last winter when we put the heating back on, during the summer with no heating, no problems!! Then we put the heating back on this year and on comes the red light.
We have had the gas valve replaced and the system flushed. However no one can put their finger on the exact problem. It seems to me this is a common fault with this system?
I have tried to call the contact numbers stamped on all the system parts but this number no longer exsists.
I would be VERY VERY happy if someone could give me a relevant contact number for help or has anyone actually had the fault sorted and can share the fix to this very anoying fault.

I have a Powermax 155, now 4 years old. 2 years ago I had the same problem. A few local tradesmen tried with no luck. On contacting the supplier they sent a guy the next day and he replace the Printed Circuit Board in 5 mins flat. It has worked ever since but is now going red most days. I found this discussion trying to find the suppliers as the number I have no longer exists. If you have any luck please let me know!

Sean - any idea how to contact PowerMax - they no longer exist - they may have been taken over by BAXI - but there Website doesn't seem to work either - failing that, what's you call out charge ;-)

Gary,

I had the exact same problem and found that the printed circuit board was the culprit. PartsCentre online do the parts you need for the powermax 185.

Once i had replaced the circuit board no problems with the Lock out but now have a problem with hot water pressure and found that over a period of a year the Mini Expansion Vessel (P527) has started to break down. So off i go again to partscentre to pay out more money!!!!!.
