Interesting I have a Powermax 155x and have had similar problems, 2 years ago (boiler is 5 years old) I had the PCB replaced, but recently I have been getting the Green light while the water heats up, then as it's about to heat the radiators it's red light and lock out.

Just had an Engineer come round who is a friend of a friend (Corgi registered but mainly does new installs not faults) and using the Installation and service instructions book that came with the boiler and following the Fault finding chart seems to think the Gas Valve (P168) is at fault.

Any other ideas welcome? also any idea where I can get parts off the shelf because it's only about 2degC outside at the moment...and fairly chilly inside

Just for information I live on a fairly new estate and the houses around me have the same boiler, one neighbour has replaced the whole boiler and another up the street has had endless problems.

Hi

Wonder if anyone can help with a problem I am having with my Powermax 185. When boiler ignition cycle initiates boiler lit is indicated for approx 1 second then extinguished. This cycle is repeated 4 or 5 times sometimes the boiler remaining lit and other times a lock out is indicated. Does the boiler lit indication definitely mean the boiler is lit? and if so why would the boiler go out. I would appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks

Alex

I am no plumber just a consumer, my 155x has similar problems. That said you will need to get a plumber out, also check that you have the original Installation and Servicing Instructions for your 185.

In the above document is a flow chart for diagnostics, mine was checked by the Plumber as follows.....

- Cleaned and refitted electrodes
- Followed gas through system at suggested test points to make sure it was there.
- Measured Gas valve outlet pressure at 5.0mbar approx
- Measured Fan pressure in Air sense line between 4.4 - 5.5mBar

According to the chart mine says it's the Gas valve at fault but obviously it's not 100% gauranteed.....probably not 50% gauranteed.

This is the kind of test your plumber (sorry heating engineer ;-) )will need to carry out to have any clue waht is wrong.

After this episode I'm getting Insurance cover for my system.

Steve

hi the problem with the boiler is electrode or lead thats the cheap option. its more like the pcb board

when the green light is on the boiler is alight
as it only stays on for a second its called flame rectification, its not having the signal back from the electrode to keep the gas valve open. thus electrode and lead. but i would put my money on the pcb dont forget if you change the electrode you will have to renew the burner gasket thanks sean

Following on from above it seems mine was the Gas Valve, 24hrs since it was replaced and the boiler is working fine again.

Hi,

I have a Power 185 Boiler, this morning I have lost the hot water.
The heating circuit is OK. There is no flow of hot water from hot water taps. Cold water is reaching the inlet feed to the boiler.
Could it be the mixer valve located in the boiler?

Any ideas.

Many thanks

yes!! sometimes if you run the water slow from the hot tap you will get a small amount of water then a bang, and the water stops. new valve needed about £60 pound

Hi

Today our Powermax started to misbehave itself with a similar problem.

We get a small amount of hot water (less than a basin full) then it runs cold, though still a little warm.

Could this be due to the mixer valve, and where can I source a replacement from please.

Many thanks.

Mike

Thanks for the info. Yes, ours is a hard water area and limescale build up in the heating coils could well be the cause.

Is this a DIY job, (I am reasonably proficient with plumbing) or is it best to call someone in?

Also thanks for the part number, but where can I source a replacement valve. My local plumbers merchant came up blank for Powermax spares.

Many thanks.

Mike
