I am finding that when the boiler comes on, say it's first cycle in the morning, all the orange lights come on but the burner light does not come on, (assuming that I have checked that the room thermostat is set high enough to set the burner running) if I then switch the boiler off at the mains leave it for 10 seconds then switch it back on again, the burner light then comes on and everything is fine again. Does this suggest something is wrong with the Limit Thermostat or something else. Thanks for any advice
I have a Powermax sealed 155 which is occasionally (2 or 3 times a day on CH and occasionally on HW only) locking out. My servicing engineer is about to change the ignition circuit, though he's already cleaned it & checked it. If he doesn't get a breakthrough, are you within reasonable range to come & sort it out? JD
I have had almost every problem with the Powermax 185 and have been following your advice for some time now. This time it looks like the circulation pump has given up the ghost. I don't suppose you know which part number it is as Partscentre don't appear to stock these?
1. can it be repaired? 2. does it need replacing ? if so, how much? does it have to be done by a professional? where can the expansion tanks be obtained from? ANY information would be extremely helpful !! thankyou

My son has a Powermax 155 ( Ithink) boiler in his flat- the red light keeps coming but the boiler would not light when we followed the instuctions etc. The Corgi gas man put in a new igniter ( we could hear it trying to ignite) and that worked the first time but it now won't light again. It appears there a slight water leak somewhere as well. The flat has been empty for 6 months although not in frosty period - and , as gas has been used £130 worth in the last 6 months I think it was left on constant or timed after the last tenant left. Have you nay idea what they should do next to fix it - we are now talking of a new boiler circa £1500! Thanks Roy
is there power at g1 and 20 (you will find this under the top front panel) there will only be 240v when it is sparking sean
ive read this topic with interest i have a powermax 135 and recently i have noticed it does not seem to heat the water as good as it used to, nver seems to be enough hot water for baths etc. also ona couple of occasions when the boiler has been set on the timer , to come on at 7amit hasnt come on so when i have pressed the + button to turn it on, the green burner light does come on but with a whimper, it has always ignited with a woosh before.......hope that makes sense to an engineer, any help would be appreciated thanks in advance
ive just read charlies post of 31/10/07 and he seems to have similar problem to myself i also have to switch off at mains sometimes before burner will ignite. anyone know the problem?
thought id better add sometimes i get a sort of hissing sound from rads and they are very hot to the touch is system overheating? also get a banging/exploding sound from boiler which from previous posts seems to be termed as kettling and is common with these boilers boiler is about 6/8 years old same as house i inherited it about 4 years ago have had it serviced once through friend of a friend RGI but lives in nottingham, i live near birmingham couldnt find anyone local to touch it, BG engineer told me to replace it as couldnt get parts and was no good etc
I have been reading everyone's messages and have to say that i am so glad i'm not the only one having these problems. I have a Powermax 140 and every winter for the past 3 years I have gone through hell with this boiler. The engineers came on Monday (i've lost count how many times they have been now), they had a tinker around and by some sheer fluke it worked but then low and behold the boiled locked out later that night. Since then it is locking out on average 6/7 times a day and there's only so many times I can re-start the system before even that stops working. The pressure is happily sitting at 1.5 and everything seems to be ok with the expansion vessel, they have previously replaced the ignition switch and the pressure value so surely it can't be that again? When its starts up it takes several attempts (usually 4/5) for the burner to come on if it is successful at all If I shut the heating off as I would normally do in the summer, the boiler works fine and I've tried to tell the engineers this on several occasions but they won't listen. Help!!
Further to last post, the heating engineer who first looked at the boiler decided it was 'something to do with the electrics' as the reason the boiler would not work. So he got his electrician friend to have a look at it. Between they they could not get it to work. We told them to give up and send their bill. We then contacted Baxi direct - 'heat team' who came and looked at the boiler and their man said the previous guys had left the boiler unsafe with the gas still turned and he would report them to Corgi etc . But he said there was a lot of work now to be done to 'fix' what they had done. he said he would contact 'head office' and today they say they will not fix the boiler. So we are now at our wits end. The boiler is in Congleton Cheshire - is there anyone around there with enough knowledge to fix the boiler or should we give up and buy a new one? Thanks for your help so far Roy
I had British Gas in to repair the boiler in August (as I am part of Homecare cover) as the fan had broken and the boiler kept overheating and locking-out. This problem has been resolved but since it was fixed, the boiler is really loud - loud enough to wake you when it comes on in the morning. Does anyone know how I can remedy this unacceptable noise-level? My neighbour has the same boiler and his is extremely quiet (as a boiler should be). Any help/advice would be v. appreciated.
