Yes its about that. I tried again this morning putting both the heating and water on the all day setting and it now works!! Annoying but didn't work at all for 2 days and still doesn't if not on all day.

Hi

I've just joined and I need help with my boiler.

We have a powermax 185 boiler which is 6 years old. It was installed in the newly built house we purchased. The problem is Low hot water flow. Already had British gas engineer out to have a look and they thought it was the Blending valve causing the problem, he replaced it but still hasn't solved problem...still getting poor water flow. He then said built up of lime scales in the coils is likely to be the cause. Solution is to have a new boiler.

Apart from replacing the boiler, is there another method we could use to improve the flow rate ??

Chuck

good old British Gas ,New Boiler seems to solve all problems.Loadsamoney
Try search for BAXI POTTERTON fixed price repairs/service or SEAN on this site seems to be a very knowlegable chap . You should expect more than Six years service from a Powermax. What is your location ?

We have a homecare plan with British Gas but before joining them we did use heatteam (Baxi) before for annual servicing and a repair job a few years ago but they are getting ridiculously expensive, they want £300 upfront !!

What is the average cost to replace a similar boiler nowadays ??

We in live Swallownest, Sheffield.

Sean,

I have a Powermax 185 boiler that has recently started to lockout (Red lock out light on) when its windy outside. You then have to restart it where it fires up OK. On a calm day its fine and we have no problems.

Could it be a blockage somewhere either preventing the exhaust gases being removed correctly or the burner not getting enough air?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Stuart.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Hello,

Did you get an answer? We have a very similar problem as our powermax 185, approx 5 years old, locks out regularly, especially when it is windy or when it is having to work hard eg doing heating and running a bath etc on a cold day - no problems in summer (altho the engineers who've been seem to say that wind is irrelevant). For a time it did refuse to relight but will now relight when switched on/off (after various ignition parts replaced). Now the problem happens about once a week, some days works fine, others we can't get it to stay on for 20 mins.

We're in the B Gas Home care scheme and they've been out 9 times over 3 months (I would have called them out more often but I just cannot keep taking time off work so have left it until it gets unbearable each time - ie until we're without heating or hot water). Replaced various parts on a very piecemeal basis but don't seem to have any real understanding of what they are doing - the latest engineer said Potterton won't speak to BG so they can't ask them, but had his text books out!

As far as I know they have replaced ignition, gas valve and say they are coming back to do pump, gas valve (again) and some other bits later this week bt the worrying thing is that have slapped an 'at risk' notice on it today (because when they put their probe/meter in it the CO readings would not stay still - ranged from 15 to 300 odd - supposed to be 25). My guess is that if the fan etc does not resolve it and they still get these readings they will try to write it off and say I need a new boiler next time they come. Has been no mention of these baffles that others refer to?

Any one had any similar experience, especially of why they got this strange CO reading? The engineer seemed never to have had this before? It seemed a bit odd.

Me again, brief update, BG out again today and very nice chap spent 5 hours working on it, replaced fan and other parts, but boiler still not working right - altho at least not failing the CO reading test any more. When boiler is run at full gas pressure gets wrong CO readings and now that fan has been replaced get awful squeek. He's not happy with air intake either?

BG coming back in the morning to look again but wonder if anyone has had any similar experience or any tips?

Thanks again Sean for your time, it was a great help to be able to discuss it.

Final (I hope) post from me - my problem turned out to be due to the fact that the boiler flue had not been properly installed 5 years ago - the protective sleeve had been left on it so that the air intake was covered up - hence the cut outs on windy days!

Builders came out, removed sleeve, boiler works perfectly and BG happy with readings etc - hopefully end of story!
