Hi i hope some one can help, But first i would like to say THANK YOU so much sean for calling me back on sunday 20th and i have got the thing working again i did blow down the pipe and yes i did nearly faint :)

I have 2 questions

1. Is the ignition box/pcb easy to replace on an old 185 as it is so loud and wakes us up every time it fires up the boiler???
and
2.can i replace the blender valve by just shutting of the water supply only or do i have to drain the system again??

its a 185 open vented system, Oh and any ideas on how to stop the kettling and banging pipe sound in the night.

Hi Sean, I'm new to this forum and have a powermax 155. I have had an engineer out from Pottertons (the Baxi people apparently who took 10 days to get out to me) and he has said that the cylinder has gone on the boiler. Apparently this is not classed as a spare part by powermax and therefore I have to replace the whole system!

The original problem started when the pressure on the boiler was tipping just over 3 and the boiler was trying to ignite but then locking out. The boiler was leaking down onto the ceiling below too.

Sean, I can't believe I'm going to have to replace the whole system. Is there any alternative. Is it not possible to get another cylinder from anywhere?? There is a 185 on ebay. Is that the same cylinder size as the 155? The boiler is about 8-9 years old. WE HAVE BEEN WITHOUT HOT WATER AND HEAT FOR 2 WEEKS NOW!!!

Hi Sean,

sorry i did not ring you back i thought you could do with the piece and quite:) i have managed to do all the things to the boiler myself i changed the pump valves the blender valve and the pcb and it is all working great apart from 1 problem every time the boiler is on heating water, It sounds like there is a war going on in there with banging and it does not stop until the boiler turns off then the bangs stop instantly..

I have put some silencer in the header tank a week ago and to be honest it sounds worse to me. It is a power max 185

Please is there any way to shut this thing up????

Hi Sean

I'm not sure where the leak was coming from but when the boiler has gone off before it has leaked water but this usually dries up when the boiler starts up again. The engineer said the water seemed to be sitting at the bottom of the cylinder. He replaced a pressure valve but it didn't fix the problem. As far as I know he didn't test anything else.

Susan.

Hello Pompey74.

I seem to be experiencing the same problem with my boiler that you had in december of last year (I can only get hot water if I put it onto the "hot water only" and not on the timed position) can't trace the reply thread that you had, is there any chance you could reply with what you had to do to rectify the problem and is your boiler now ok? (Oh & congrats on winning the cup)

Hi

I have a Powermax 140. I have hot water but no heating. Does anyone know what the problem could be? How much would it cost to be repaired?

Nicki

I have a Powermax 185 boiler. Recently the overflow has started to drip once the shower or CH is on. Can anyone help I would really appreciate it.

Following this discussion the boiler does not inspire me to think its reliable. Only moved in the house 9 months ago, the house is only 5 years old.

Hi. I have a 155 which as far as I am aware hasnt been serviced for a good few years. It has recently started making a loud buzzing noise from behind the main control panel. I have read a lot of the posts on here but there are an awful lot - so apologies if I am repeating a question - but is this a known problem and if so is it likely to be a self-fix, pro-repair, or dump it in a skip and buy a decent one type situation?!

Cheers for any ideas.

Paul

Hi,

Did you ever sort out the problem with your Boiler? I have a Powermax 140 which I've had for 6 years (Installed when the house was built) In April of this year it started locking out and since then I have spent over £800 trying to sort it out!! I've had countless new parts, a full service, 2 new PCB's and a full boiler flush.......none of which have worked!!
Hence I would be interested to know if yours did start working again and if so, what was the problem!!

Thanks,

Powermax 185 boiler is making a loud humming sound when I press the CH button on the boiler (for central heating).

The room thermostat is set to a high temperature and makes no noise (i.e. clicking).

Hot water works fine. I've tried this on the "constant hot water" and "timed" setting. Both make the identical humming sound from the front "control panel" type area of the boiler.

No other obvious things - pressure is fine, lockout light not on.

Any help and ideas very gratefully received.
