My Powermax 185s problem is with the CH. When CH is left off over the summer and I then need to use it as the weather turns cold, the pump will not start up and obviously I cannot get any heating. I have had a a corgi registered engineer come to look at it and he said that the pump had just frozen because of the prolonged inactivity. It took him a few minutes to fix it. Any ideas as to what the problem may be and how he managed to get it going again so quickly.

hi the answer he gave you is correct!
1: you should run the heating for a minute or so in the summer, once a week.it tells you this in the book (its ok no one reads it )
2:give it a bump with a handel of a screwdriver

I too have had the exact same problem with the CH. Although last week we had to have our gas supply disconnected for about an hour, when the engineer had finished he asked us to fire up the boiler (155 SS)... (we have left it on HW only since March!).. everything appeared to work... then.. nothing red light came on and all rads were still cold.
The engineer soon found the pump to be siezed... used the screwdriver and hey presto... hot radiators in an instant. He did suggest that the pump may be damaged/siezed... and may be worth getting it looked at... is this true?
However since then I have now started firing the CH each day...with some strange results...
1, the pressure gauge shot from it's usual 1.25bar to 2.1 bar.. (never usually moves more than .2bar when running) and the boiler was still firing!! I turned everything off and used the dump valve (red knob inside top casing) to release the excess pressure... back to 1.25bar.... then fired up and the pressure dropped to below 1bar!! anyawy.. after topping up via filling loop the pressure has since held steadyish.. could air in the system have caused this problem?
2, nearly a week on and pump etc all work well, no lock outs etc. but the pressure gauge has dropped again but only very slightly.. less than .2bar.. should I be worried or could the discovery of another cold part rad (air) be the problem?
Since new we have had no less than 7 leaks on various rads... I have checked tham all (to the extent of becoming paranoid) and can not find any leaks..
Thanks for listerning...

HI CHECK EXPANSION VESSEL PRESSURE .YOU NEED TO DO THIS WHEN BOILER PRESSURE IS AT 0 BAR AND THE PRESSURE RELIEF
IS OPEN. (DUMP VALVE)!!!! PRESSURE NEEDS TO BE ABOUT 1 BAR
USE A PROPER PRESSURE GAUGE AND MAKE SURE ITS NOT LEAKING WHEN YOU FINISHED PUMPING IT UP GOOD LUCK!

Hi Everyone,

We have a Powermax 155 Boiler which we inherited when we moved into our house in January. All systems where working fine and then we switched the CH off from March. The HW has always worked fine. We have come to switch the CH on the other day and whilst it is showing everything is working fine no hot water is getting through to the radiators.

We have tried what everyone has said about banging the pump but still nothing. We have released the valvle slight and quite a bit of air came out. We continued letting it out for quite a while and started to get some steam but no water.

Water is coming out of the other pumps and we have tested all radiators.

Should we continue to let the steam out with the hope that water will suddenly start to come through, or does anyone have any other suggestions.

Otherwise I think its going to have to be an engineer.

Thanks

I too think an engineer may be required...

This morning, the pressure had dropped to .75 bar... again no signs of any leaks... topped up the system and fired up... everything fine.. exept a couple of rads are cold at the bottom.. hot at the top... !

I have since opened fully each thermostatic rad valve fully... as this did seem to help slightly.

On the auto air vent (brass lump on top of boiler) this does not have any screw type plasic thingy... should it!

Puzzled again!

Sean,

how much do you charge to service a Powermax 185 boiler. Mine is about 4 years old, i'm not sure if its ever been serviced? I'm in the griffithstown/Pontypool area.

Sean

I have read your reply to a problem posted and the symptoms sound the same as mine (powermax 185)? I switched the system on (for the radiators) 2 or 3 weeks ago and no central heating! Traced this to the cold start stat - replaced - central heating is now fine. It's now the turn of the hot water. Having worked all summer we now have a small burst of hot followed by some loud knocking/banging and then just a trickle of hot from the taps. System all appears fine at the boiler display, with all the corect lights etc. You spoke about a valve? What valve?

Many thanks, Ian,
Cardiff.

Very prompt reply ... many thanks. Would that be a 'Themostatic Blending Valve' P665?
