Hi - not sure what model our boiler is. Our heating etc was on a timer. Yesterday we threw a party for our 3 yr old daughter and had a bouncy castle that ran off the mains from our house. When our kettle was switched on it tripped all the switched off and not sure if that's when it happened but seems a coincidence. About 6pm I noticed the red lockouit light had come on the boiler. On switching it off, waiting 10 secs then putting it back on it does the same thing after about 30 seconds! Is this a coincidence or could it be something else is wrong! Any info most appreciated! thank you - Tina

I have a Powermax 155 boiler. In a 'trying to be helpful' way I topped up the water pressure (normal winter task) but went too far - pressure went to over 2.5 and triggered the safety overflow pipe outside which started dripping. It has now been dripping for 2 days. Boiler is working fine - though pressure on the dial is still reading 2.5. How can I safely release a bit more pressure from the system and stop the outside pipe from dripping? Any advice appreciated!

I have a Powermax 155x. It's just had 8 new baffles, the burner head cleaned, the burner head gasket replaced, the electrodes cleaned and a new programmer installed - work done by BGas. When I have it set to constant hot water I dont get any lockouts. When I put the central heating on it fires up OK. However after the central heating has been running for a while it locks out. Its now started doing this daily and is taking longer and longer each time to get the burner going again - the green burner light used to come on and then go off before it locked out but now the green burner light doesn't even come on. I have to wait quite a while before it will fire back up again. Any ideas what the underlying cause could be - CH pump?

It's been 2 trouble free years since my last post, but unfortunately here I am again with my Powermax 185!I had a leaking TRV the other day so a drained the system fitted a new one, refilled the system and added some system cleaner in the header tank (to be drained again and then inhibitor added in 3 weeks as described on the bottle). That was a week ago and all has been good. However I've started to get the problem of the CH not coming on. The hot water heats up fine. Then of it's own accord the CH will fire up but this may take serveral hours to kick in, today it came on at 16.30, having been set to come on since 8.00. After the initial starting it works prefectly well coming on and off as you would expect. Any ideas? Could this be the blender valve? If so could I do this myself? Looks straight forward enough, but I know looks can be deceiving! The other issue I've had for some considerable time but is getting worse is the same as Gary's. Hot water from the bath lasts a few seconds and then just turns to luke warm. Water from the sink taps is burning hot again I'm thinking it could be the blender valve? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Mark

Hi Sean,This is a little message to you sean, and a little storey for everybody else. (Worth Reading) We would only get into this forum when our boilers stop working, and there is a man that seems to help us everytime and asks no pennies of all of us and that guy is Sean, (He knows these boiler..Full Stop.. and who sometimes to help leaves his number. On Saturday the 24th Jan my boiler (powermax 185) broke and it got very cold very quickly and my family would have suffered but I found help on this forum and a number i could call (cheekly) and that was Sean. he helped me with the common clock problem and through his help i then got an electrician (my dad) to do an easy bypass and now i have a wireless thermostat controlling my heating daily. (£59 Screwfix) And it works great! and i can wonder round the house with it! I would like to say a massive thanks to Sean for helping me quickly and without being patronising or not saying "why are you calling me on a saturday" he must have saved me over £300 today in advise. If you get the pleasure of Seans help then listen and for god sake prize his address out of him and send the man some money!! Because you know what it would have cost. Sean please get in contact with me and send me your email and home address, so i can return the help given. Steve Canterbury. [Log in to view email]

absolutely correct, I agree 100% what Sean doesnt know about Powermax is not worth knowng. I am a heating engineer ,and like many in or profession we tend to specialise in certain areas ,makes and models. Ask me about Kestons , no problem ,but regarding Powermax mainly the older IMI types I have often come close to contacting Sean myself. The man deserves more than thanks ,everyone needs money, after all his advice is first class and always accurate. Dare I mention British Gas ,how many people on this forum got the job sorted free of charge ? My advice to Sean is take the money ,you cannot live on praise alone.

Hi Sean, No the lights are not dim at all. I am having a complete nightmare with Npower home team (would NOT reccomend!) Our boiler is a Powermax 140 - I first had a guy out who pressed a button at the top (said it was half out half in) and the boiler started working! He then checked the pressure and said being at 2 on the gage at front and 24 in the white thing it was all wrong! He then proceeded to get water out of one of the radiators to drop the pressure (might I add getting water everywhere!) which did drop it. He then pumped loads of air into the white circular thing to try and get it to 16 and the other one at 1. This is what he said it should be - Is this correct. This was a Thurs night and he said he would order the parts the following morning and the call centre would call me back to arrange fitting prob on the Mon....On the monday I had not heard anything, and on calling them I found that No parts had been ordered and the guy was off sick and nobody could get hold of him for part numbers!! To try and resolve they sent another engineer on Thurs to re-diagnose and get the parts ordered - he seemed like he knew what he was doing - he was here 4 hours! He originally thought it was the board at the front but in the end diagnosed that the water pump was the problem and the white circular pressure thing (excuse my terminology!) was not at fault although he too said the pressure should be 1. He also changed the filling loop thing as he said it had been installed incorrectly and not to water regulations?! The part was ordered immediately on Thurs but we were told it wont arrive until the following Tues and they can't get an engineer out to fit it til the Thursday!! What a joke - I have a 3 yr old and have been without any heating or hot water for nearly 3 weeks! I am just hoping and praying that it is the pump after all and not something else! Any info most appreciated. We also dont have the manual as it wasn't here when we brought the flat! Can you get one if you call potterton's? Thank you in advance - Tina

Hi Sean,Well before the guys game the boiler was on ok but the red 'lock out' light would come on after about 30 seconds of it trying to light, you can hear it trying. At the moment it is all just shut down waiting for them to come back on Thursday! It just seems a bit odd to me that it all seemed to go wrong when we had the power trip thing although I had noticed before this that the water temperature was not as hot as it used to be! (altho partner hadn't noticed this so wasn't sure!) If they come with the pump on Thursday and it still doesn't work I dont know what I will do!! R u local to Camberley in Surrey at all? Thanks for your responses - Tina

Hi SeanI have read all he pwermax threads and you seem to be the Expert. I fitted my 155 about 12 years ago. Which has run our underfloor heating system since. We have had only one fault when I had to replace a sticking Fan. Over the last few months we have had to top up the pressure quite regular. Tonight when I topped it up I could hear dripping. Upon investigation the boiler is leaking from the rear of the burner close to the air inlet I think. Any ideas where the leak maybe from. If i switch the boiler off it stops. When I switch it on it starts up again. Hope its not a cracked cylinder. Cheers David 07891271811

I'm posting this in case anybody else experiences similar problems in future. Over the past 12 months my Powermax 155x had got gradually worse at igniting. Typically the burner would only fire after about the 3rd attempt. Over Xmas it got worse to the point were it was cutting out daily. Then we had a power cut and the heating wouldn't come on at all. The red lights on the front were dimmed and after reading this forum I was able to tell BGas that it needed a new programmer. After a new programmer was fitted the heating came back on again. Then a couple of days later it cut out again and the burner wouldn't fire at all (i.e. no green light). BGas changed the electrode, high voltage lead and the PCB. It's now 2 weeks later and I can happily report that the burner now lights on the first attempt every time (touch wood) and there are no other problems. I have to say that the BGas engineer who did the work for me was excellent and knew what he was doing. Having a Homecare agreement has certainly paid off!
