Sean,

I wonder if you can help me. I need to descale my boiler (PM185) and have the descaler (X400) to do it with but I need to know 2 things;

1. Best way to drain the boiler?.
2. Do I pour the x400 into the loft tank?.

Many thanks
TIM

Another one for Sean;

Hi Sean,

I drained my CH system and now my 185 has decided to pack up. At first I had hot water and no CH and now I have neither.

I have read a number of posts on here and am hoping with your advice I can get it up and running again.

After draining the system, I started to fill it back up again by releasing the ball cock in the over head tank. I also put in some inhibitor to try and help the noise/kettling. once the system started refilling, I bled all the radiators to make sure all or most of the air was out. Once I had done this I switched the boiler back on, It started to make a noise but didn't fire up. I waited a couple of minutes but nothing happened, so I turned it back off. Before switching it off (at the fuse/mains) I had hot water but afterwards I have no hot water and the boiler doesn't even start up.

One thing I wasn't sure of was whether or not the boiler refilled.

Any advice on the above problems would be greatly appreciated.

I was looking to replace the boiler later on this year so any inexpensive remedies would be great.

Many thanks in advance

Rob

Sean, you are a genius! When I read you reply I thought there's no 'red cross' button. Took the top cover off, had a look around with a torch and although it wasn't obvious there was something red with a cross on - pressed that, turned the power back on and we have lift off - took a while to reheat water and for the heating to get going but problem solved for now!

Thank you for your help - much appreciated.

Sean,

I know I keep asking this;

Do you need to drain the boiler totally to add the x400??.
I desperatly need to descale my system.
I can only gather that X400, X200 and X100 is the way to go but of course any advice would be great.

All i need is some info regarding draining and refilling.

Thanks in advance
TIM

Have a problem with my PowerMax 155 sealed vented system in that then pressure drops to zero each morning.
The boiler still fires-up ok, and we get hot water and the CH works, and the pressure rises to 1.5 , and remains there most of the time.
But does drop back to zero when we fill the batch up, but the boiler fires up and the pressure goes back to1.5 after about 6-8 mins.
Have tried switching it to Hot water only , and the same thing occurs. Filling the bath the pressure drops, the boiler fires up and pressure goes back to 1.5
The PRV valve has been changed twice and the pressure in the expansion unit checked.
Have checked for leaks on all the radiators and cant find any , and there is no overflow occurring. Have not filled up with more water in the system as the pressure is ok, and don't want to send it above 3.0
BG are due back in next week, if anyone can provide me with some advice that would be great. As BG are currently saying a need a power flush, and look into replacing the boiler.

we have the same problem and our engineer rang 0870 6060922 but they will only talk to corgi registered engineers. It still didn't solve the problem. Ours is fine when it's not cold and then we reset the reset button time and time again if it's cold it can take 20 mins to get going again. When we first had it called their engineers out lots of time but it warmed up so the problem went away until the next winter. If anyone can solve this problem I'd love to hear from them. Ours is 7 years old. Grace

Hi,

good day to you all, this is my first post and was hoping you could help, I have a powermax 185 and i have been suffering the dreaded problem of the red lockout issue, last Saturday we had the British Gas service engineer come and do a yearly service on the boiler and we told him the problem and he removed all the front panel and he said the cylinder is leaking just above the burner and that is why its locking out when the unit is used.

He said powermax does not make this cylinder or spare parts any more and this is not covered by british gas, without the spare parts we can not repair and your only covered by a repair and not a new boiler, so you going to have to pay for a new boiler.

this sounds really bad, if they can not repair then i would have thought they would replace.

my question to the forum is, is this true that powermax is no longer making or supplying the spare parts for the powermax 185?

we brought the house in Sept 2002 as a new build, should the boiler break down like this within 10 years and also the boiler whistles when it is in use as well as the other 60 or so house holds on this estate.

any one has a contact number for powermax or know where we can buy a new cylinder?

thank you very much for you help in advance.

Hi,
This has been a major issue regarding British Gas. Its seems that they have been told to sell sell sell even if the current boiler can be repaired.

You can still buy the parts because i'm going on a powermax course next week (All versions of powermax's). My powermax is nearly ten years old now. They are great when working but expensive when they break. On another note try and get a second opinion because a red light lockout can be caused by different parts failing naming the circuit board for one.....

So if i was you get another plumber to check it out to see if it really is leaking first...

Hi,

http://www.baxi.co.uk/information/pc.htm

I'm doing the course purely for my own benefit. It costs £45 for all day including lunch etc....

I'm going to the Dartford one but there are many more centres around.

hi the cylinder was never a spare part, can you see the leak !!! this is very important part of the question, lots of leaking ones but no one can see where the water is comming from. i have never seen a 185 leaking. 155 yes! it can be repaired if you can see where its cracked.how old is it (5 years guarantee on the cylinder) baxi will love me for that. (10 years on the older ones) now the emails and phone calls will start..

Please please please can someone help with our Powermax 185.

We only have a trickle of hot water from all taps. We have replaced blending valve which has made no difference and have been told to check a filter for limescale, but have trouble locating one.

Any help would be gratefully received as we have 3 children and not enough hot water for a bath!!!!

the filter is in the brass fitting below the tee on the cold main where it goes in at the bottom of the cylinder (check the filters on the blender valve) some had them ,there is also a flow restrictor green or red in the tee with an o ring just take it out

Hi Sean

Thanks for the quick response.

Is the restrictor valve the one with the 'big blue' air valve on it?

Cheers
