Hi

Can anyone advise me, we have a powermax boiler and had nothing but trouble with it since moving into brand new house in 2000. First the clock went and we had that replaced, then the following year a valve went. Following year another valve went (always at Christmas, my mother thinks we do it on purpose to get rid of her!).

Now however, I've my neighbours complaining because for about three weeks the boiler now makes a really loud banging noise.

The heating and hot water seem to be working fine. The clock is fine, the pressure seems fine. I've bled the radiators. But noise persists. It seems to be getting louder!

Help!

Hi
Just read the message about high wind problem, when Powermax 185 cuts out and refuses to re-ignite until the wind dies down, in our case perhaps 3 days later. We have experienced the same problem for the last ten years(!), so this can only be the reason.
Comforting to know it's not just us, but surely someone must know how to cure this!
Please help.
P.S. We have recently noticed that there is a lot of "banging", also known as "kettling" apparently, when the central heating goes off.
Time for a new boiler do you think??

Hi,
I recently went to a powermax 145,155 and 185 servicing course.
As regards to the 'Kettling' your out of luck.
Even baxi admits that the 185 design is flawed. The only way of getting round the scaling problem is to fit an external exchanger and bypass the internal coil completely. The kit costs around £230. The best thing about this kit is that you can descale it whenever you want (make it a 155 effectivly). There is NO WAY of descaling the 185 and therefore a pretty useless piece of copper after 8 years.

the noise is not from the coil, its from the water around the burner.you can fit another pump so when the burner light comes on the second pump runs moving the water around the cylinder. i would just live with it unless you know a a bright plumber that can work it out !!!!

Many Thanks for the info, Sean. Trouble is, the banging travels through the pipes into the house, upsetting the female of the species...

Hi Sean
Normally not long after the heating/*!#%!@ goes off, in fact there doesn't seem to be as much banging now that the weather is reasonable and the heating is switched off.
Thanks for your help

Can anyone help? please
We have a Powermax 157 (LPG model if makes a difference) sealed system model fitted into new house approx 10yrs ago. Have had numerous issues with boiler over last 3 years, replaced CH pump and also have had to seal up few joint leeks, serviced last year.
Problem has now arrived where boiler keeps blowing fuses, system starts up ok, green light on etc but when water gets hot just keeps blowing the fuse. Have had electrician in and has checked power is good to all circuits, but was wondering if anyone has had same problem or knows what the issue may be? Any help would be most appreciated.

After looking back over numerous posts I am pretty sure its my Thermostatic Blending Valve on my Powermax 155 sealed system that now needs replacing, however I would appreciate a second opinion. After turning on the hot water all is well for about the first minute, however I have found if I turn the water pressure down (mains pressure under kitchen sink) I can maintain the temperature level long enough to at least get a hot shower. If indeed it is the blending valve can anyone confirm if the Part Number still is P498.

Many Thanks

Jeff

Hi,

I have a Powermax 155. The central heating side has always worked fine. The hot water supply, though, routinely dwindled in both power and temperature resulting in almost annual flushing and new blending valves over the last few years, most recently about a month ago. Since then however the hot water emerging has been wonderfully hot but of minimal quantity - only enough to provide a trickle from one tap at a time which stops immediately another (hot) tap is turned on. When no hot taps are on, the water builds up in the pipes giving an initial burst when the tap is opened, lasting perhaps five seconds, then virtually nothing. The pressure on the cold is undiminished. I would be very grateful for any advice, please.

Secondly, as a matter of curiosity. the manual diagram shows the mini expansion vessel (122) between the cold inlet and the blending valve, mine is below the cold inlet, does this make any difference?

Thank you.

Nick

Sean,

Just thinking this through, is that the tee of the mini expansion itself or the tee immediately above it i.e. the cold inlet? If the former, which is the best joint to get at it, that underneath - the mains side or that on top, the boiler side? - or have I completely misunderstood and it's the end cap opposite the bulb of the expansion?

Thanks again.

Nick
