Problems with Powermax 185 Boiler

I can't find anything that fits the description. The bulb leads via a black washer/plug to a metal plate with the same size hole in so removing the plug would not change the flow. The bottom of the tee has a thick metal moulded in plug which reduces the flow and the top has what looks like plastic teeth pointing into the tube, held in by a metal screw-in collar with an external thread. I cannot get the blank plate opposite the bulb off. Is there a trick to this? Thanks Nick
I've now put it all back together - I couldn't get the plate opposite the bulb off. As a process of elimination, I tried screwing the blending valve all of the way out to maximise the cold in the mix: the pressure from the hot taps was then good (but obviously cold). As all of the water, hot and cold, goes through the tee we were discussing above, I don't think that that can be the problem otherwise presumably I would have a restricted flow of cold too? All I can assume (unless I've misunderstood something - quite possible) is that the blockage must be in the "spiral tube" which carries the water through the boiler - in which case, having just had it flushed/descaled, do I need a giant pipe-cleaner type thing? Does any of this sound plausible? Thanks again Nick
Also if it is a viable solution does anyone have a recommendation for a suitable company in the Huntingdon area?
Was hoping someone (hopefully the legendary Sean) could help. I have a 8-9 yr old Powermax 155 sealed system boiler. It has locked out once or twice before and we rectified by topping up the pressure which worked a treat. However, a few days ago it locked out again. Pressure is constant at 2.0 bar. I can hear the fan start and the ignition clicking but it doesn't ignite. I can take the cold showers but the missus and kids are starting to get grumpy!! Any suggestions or am I looking at a heatteam callout? Many thanks Nick (london)

Unfortunately it didn't work...so I bit the bullet and stumped up the 269 quid for heateam (inc VAT parts, labour and repairs up to 1500 and they insure the boiler for a year so you can call them out again). Turns out the flue switch was faulty...and he replaced it and a few other items too (gas valve) had a good look and ran all the various diagnostics test...was here for a couple of hours. Its up and running again and works fine. If anyone else has problems with their powermax that sean can't solve over the forum...I'd definitely recommend them. cheers
I previously posted on this forum (page 35) after my Powermax 155 (sealed system) locked out and refused to ignite. I found (through a recommendation), a engineer who knew a bit about the Powermax range and fixed the problem, down to a leak (two in fact). However while it consistently works, I now only get hot water for about a minute before it turns cold again. Any suggestions?

Right, I've tested your question. I let the tap run until the hot water turned cold. When the green light comes on again it heats up a small amount of hot water. After 10 minutes, I turn the tap on again, and again initially got some hot water, but it turned lukewarm and then cold after about a minute. FYI the engineer who came round "fixed the joint above the pump and the switch from the pressure gauge into the top of the boiler" (I'm quoting my flatmate's text). He also changed the filter as well. Thanks again, Pete Adverts Currently On Preloved - Place an ad here for free

Thanks for you help...in your opinion does it need replacing, or is there a way of adjusting it? It seems strange that prior to the problem with the leak, we never had a problem with the temperature of the water though. Thanks again, Pete
I've tested the blender valve and I think you're spot on. Even with the valve turned full on, only a little hot water comes through, although the hot pipe above the valve is very hot. I'm guessing there's no way of cleaning the valve though if it's scaled up? Presumably it needs replacing? It does seem as though it is leaking a little too, when water is running through it. Thanks again for your advice. Pete

Im hoping somebody might be able to help me! No plumber seems to want to go near my Powermax. The bolier is about 8 years old and I have been at there for about 6 months and ever since i move in there has only ever been warm water - never boiling hot. The heating is fine - have never had a problem with it. The shower started to go hot then cold then hot again and now it is just cold. The taps are running luke warm as they always have done. I dont suppose anyone has any ideas at all? I dont want to have another cold shower! I live in Kent is anyone does know of a plumber who will look at it for me
Is it a 185 or 155?. The company that generally fixes powermax's is the 'heateam'. Google the address but expect to pay £250 upfront. This also pays for any spares needed. Failing that let us know what model you have
We have not one, but two Powermax 185 boilers which I think are on a vented system (there is no pressure guage), they are 8-9 years old. When we moved in they were on a Heateam contract but as we had really poor customer service from them we moved back to British Gas..........who have now visited one of the boilers dozens of times and are telling us these boilers are nothing but trouble and should be replaced. They have had Baxi in (who I think may be Heatteam?) more than once but the problem, which is that the boiler locks out always recurrs - sometimes minutes after the technician has left and sometimes months. We also seem to use an awful lot of gas, even allowing for prices going up etc. We don't have a manual which would be really useful. Since the last B Gas tech repaired it earlier this week the water is scalding hot, and despite the Central heating being off, one radiator is constantly warm and two others had definite heat to them - we are wondering if its possible to turn the water temp down as it must be v wasteful to heat it to such a high heat, and why three out of the 7 radiators powered by this boiler are warm when the heating is off. Basically, have been looking for an expert on these boilers since B Gas freely admit that they are not - seems like Sean could be our guy!!
thanks sean
