Hi, can anyone help?I have a powermax 185 over 12 years old that has started to make an extremely loud banging noise, once sometimes twice a day, no real pattern to it other than I jump out of my boots every time it bangs. Any ideas what the problem is and how to resolve. thanks

Hi, we have a powermax 155 sealed (I think, because it has a pressure gauge) and the central heating has not been used over the summer. The hot water is fine and we are not getting lock out red light, but we are not getting any heat to the radiators. The green pilot light comes on for the hot water but is not kicking in for the radiators. Pressure had dropped, my husband boosted it up and drained all radiators but this hasn't worked. I called heatteam today and then want £320 to come out, so thought I might ask on here before booking them. Sean, can you help us? I have emailed you in the hope that you might live in our area, but have since realised you are in Wales, so apologies for that. Any advice would be gratefully received.

HiWe have an open vented Powermax 155x CP and the programmer's red lights dimmed and then went out as others have described. So we will need a new programmer ('clock'). What I would like to know from Guru Sean or any other wise heads reading this is, is a clock failing after 7 years quite common, or have we been unlucky? This one was mfr'd by Horstmann. Incidentally, my first thought was that it looked like a battery problem, I tested the backup Li-ion battery though and it still had plenty of juice. And if a new clock will cost around £75, that seems quite steep for what you're getting. I presume they are made by more than one manufacturer, can anyone point to the cheapest supplier? Also, am I right in thinking that if I link terminals 27 and 28 I can run the central heating manually off the switch as a stopgap measure? One final question I'd like to know - can you adjust (lower) the output hot water temperature for the taps at all? Or would this necessarily also lower the temp in the CH system and reduce its efficiency?
Hope you can help, Morgan Perth, Scotland.

hi yes new clcok needed. you can fit a programable room stat but you would have to leave the water on constant as the stat would not bring the boiler on, only the pump.you can turn the water down on you blender valve but if its very hot at the momnent you possibly want a new one of them (nice £75) dont turn the store down it will affect everthing ps dont keep turning the power off to the boiler the clocks dont like it. sean

Hi, I hope someone can help me - I was so glad to find this discussion! I have a Powermax 155 boiler and for the last 3 years, it runs perfectly over the summer when the heating is off, but as soon as I turn the heating on, it locks out, sometimes tripping the electric circuits too. The boiler then will not turn on at all I am a memeber of the Bristish Gas Homecare service and over the last 3 winters - no word of a lie - I call them out every week - sometimes twice, without fail. Each engineer tells me that they have sorted it, only for it to break again soon after - sometimes within hours of them leaving. This is a nightmare as I need to take whole afternoons off work to wait for them to come out. Is there anyone out there that knows of a decent boiler engineer in the Nottingham/Mansfield area as I am now going to cut Brisitsh Gas loose and pay for someone to come to sort this out once and for all. Any help would be really appreciated! Thanks, Alice.

HiI have just moved to a new house. The Powermax 185 boiler runs for about 30min then cuts out. You get hot water but no heating regardless if you have heating s/w on on thermostat high. At no point does the pump come on. Does the pump need to run in hot water only mode? or is that the problem.

No, the pump is not needed in hot water mode. Your Powermax probably has either a jammed CH pump or programmer failure. The likelihood of each is about 50/50.Cheers, Mike the Boilerman

Hi Everyone, well we have had a good few weeks without problem, but have today found the boiler is leaking water!! Eek!! Any suggestions on where to start looking? Or is this a job for the heatteam? It is a slow leak but with quite a lot of water, because two towels that were in the same cupboard are soaked through. Pressure has dropped to zero obviously, and if I had the money I would get rid of this boiler tomorrow!!
