OK tested the bike today, it was fun but the stand fell down if I went fast down a hill (gets about 45mph downhill so I'm quite impressed), I had to keep kicking it back up. I'll make some kind of clip to keep that up until needed so that should be easy eonugh. The indicators just stay on rather than tick, the brake light doesn't go brigter when I brake and the rear left indicator does not come on at all. Is the black electrical box behind the front light the one I should look into first to try and find the problem? Anyone come accross this kind of thing before? Please advise.

Hi
I bought my son an XT 50 and have a few questions.
The kill switch does not work, took it out completely and shorted it at the connector but still wont kill engine.
With engine running you can take the key out and it still runs. If you stop it by putting down the stand you cannot use the electric starter but if you kick it over it starts without a key in the ignition and ignition turned off? Not sure where to look now but need to fix it as anyone can start it and ride away

Hi Cliff, you say you shorted the kill switch at the connector, this might be why it can be started without the key? I'm not sure, I don't know much about the electrics but I just wondered if you tried un-shorting the bit that you shorted and try it then, it might be a start and if it doesn't fix the issue then at least it's one thing to tick off the list. Meanwhile I'm still waiting to see if anyone can help with my elecrical problem. The indicators don't tick and I'm having problems finding the realy to check. Also the back light works but not the brake light (I don't think the filiment is broken so it could be electrical connection somewhere) If anyone has had similar issues or has any advise then please get in touch.

Hi, did you buy the bike new? I would start by unplugging the ignition switch connector block, and then try kicking it to see if it fires up, if it does you need to investigate further, if it does not then the ignition switch is wired wrong, and that would explain why the kill switch does not work, a wiring diagram is available here http://hypermotos.com/helpGB.html I printed off the pdf file, not exactly the clearest, but you can make it out. Good luck and let us know how you get on.

To the other guy with the indicators that do not flash, you will find the flasher unit behind the right side panel, just above the battery (probably a diode dropped off with vibration)

Hi
Thanks for all of the help so far.
When i mentioned that i had shorted the kill switch i meant to say with the engine running i had the kill switch apart and used a peice of wire to short the two wires to the switch (green and black/white) not sure which one is earth, one at a time to see if i could stop the engine but no luck.
I bought the bike second hand but it only has 980 miles on it and none of the ignition looks as it has been apart.
I am now going out to the garage to further investigate the ignition switch.
I did look for a wiring diagram but could not find it at the link provided.
Anybody got a complete wiring diagram for this bike.
I am an aircraft engineer by trade and this bike aint going to get the better of me!!!!!!!

Hi
Further to my last reply i have just come back from the garage more confused!!!
Took the advice and disconnected the ignition switch completely at the connector. Put the stand up, kicked it over and it started????
Had a look at wires from kick stand which have a grey, green and a black wire. the plug from it only has two wires black/white and a green. The centre wire from the kick stand plug is green but connects to nothing.
I did notice that the battery has the obvious black wire connected to it but also has a green single wire to the negative also.(which looks as if it should go to the kick stand plug instead
Not sure if someone has been playing with wires so that you do not need a switch to start or the ignition switch crapped out and they have wired it to start anyway.
Can anyone look at the battery on another bike and see if the battery has a green wire going to the negative connection???
A wiring diagram would help!!!!!

Hi Cliff

wiring diagram here http://www.hypermotos.com/wiring_diagram.pdf

Green wires are common on these bikes, so it should be connected to the neg terminal of the battery. Dont worry about the extra wire on the side stand switch connector, probably has a function on another bike but not this one. Just looked at the diagram myself, I think you will find that the black/white wire from the kill switch and the ignition switch which need to be earthed out on the green wire, join up somewhere in the loom, and that you will have no continuity on this wire between the side stand switch (which works) and the ignition/kill switches which dont work, find the break, fix it, and you will be in business.

Fixed it!!!
Took the whole loom apart on the bike-yep all the black tape had to come off!!
Found a broken wire whwere two wires join a single wire.
Have now decided to re wire complete bike with decent connectors.
Just a quick word of caution to anyone who has electrical problems. I have taken the wiring loom completely apart and was shocked at how bad the joints are put together. Some of the wires are joined by twisting 2 or 3 wires together and a blob of solder with tape over the top.I am cutting all of this out to put decent connectors in.
I also noticed as i was cutting my way into the loom how much water i found inside which added to the solder corroding away.
Dont want to see my son pushing this bke for miles so will spend a bit of time on it and get it right.
Thanks to everyone who helped.
He now wants it to go faster so i might have to get my engineering machining skills out and give it a tweak ot two.

I have two questions.

1st. Does anyone know what psi the tryres should be for the 50cc chopper.

2nd. I know I might sound like an idiot asking this, but what's the loom? I'm trying to sort out some electrical problems and I've printed a wiring diagram. My bike doesn't seem to have an indicator relay (may have been removed by previous owner?) Someone on here said that they found water and bad connections in the loom. Where and what is it? because I'd like to check the wires in mine sometime. Thanks.

Wiring loom is a term for the complete wiring assembly or wiring harness.

The bad wiring i refer to is found just after the length of plastic conduit "plastic pipe" which the wires travel through.
This is found under the petrol tank. Just after this the wiring traveling rearwards on the bike is covered in plastic insulation tape which i had to take off.
there are numerous green wires connected together at one point and numerous black/white wires connected together. These are soldered badly and require a decent joiner to be fitted.
I noticed also that where the wire had broken the wire on the inside had gone black which is known as "black wire disease" and i had to cut back quite far to find decent shinny wire again.

Thanks for that info Cliff. I know which areas to check now for bad connections. I didn't realise that there might be some shoddy connections and solder under the black tape. I made the mistake of assuming it would just be wires taped together. I have a bunch of decent spade stlye connectors. I'll use them to tidy up any bad wiring I find. I appreciate the advice and also your explanations of the various terms. I'm not too bad with the actual work of fixing but I'm just getting to grips with the lingo/terminology so you've been a great help, thanks.
