Hi guys, some assistance if you dont mind.
I bought an xt50-18 for my son which has been nothing but trouble.
New CDI unit, new coil & a nice new NGK spark plug.
All been working for about 1 week. Now it wont start.
Turns over O.K. Checked spark plug, sparking well, smell of fuel, assume all O.K.
Took the magneto off & it seems to be soaked in oil & water. Would appear as though the gasket was never sealed very well. Would this be the reason for it not to start, or should I look for something else?

Cheers

If you have a smell of fuel from the exuast and a spark it should ignite. Whether it's the correct sequence i.e.before top dead centre on compression or not or just a backfire due to it being out of sequence. The magneto plays a part in the firing system so soaked in oil/water will cause problems. It needs to be dried out in any case if it is not the problem. If you need to adjust the valve clearance, make sure it is top dead centre on the firing stroke (both valves shut). I find it easiest to undo the lock nut adjust the screw a turn or so (easier to put the feeler gauge in, put a 0,05 mm feeler gauge and adjust the screw until it just grips the feeler (use fingers to avoid overtightening), then tighten the lock nut. When you tighten the locknut this opens the gap slightly, the feeler should slide back and forth with some resistance which is correct. If too tight or slack go through the process again. Other than this I cant think of what it could be as you have fuel and spark it should do something

Hi Mike, does your bike have a manual choke or an auto? I know that my chopper does the same thing until the engine has warmed up a little. I have to play around with the choke for 60 seconds or so whilst revving until it can rev up without losing power. Once I set off it's absolutely fine. If you have an auto chock then this may be the issue as mine is manual and allows me to adjust it until it sounds and feels right.

On another note I was about to set off from work today when the engine kept losing power and dying on me. After a few minutes of messing with the choke and getting nowhere I was starting to worry that the damp weather was the problem but then realised that I'd forgotten to turn the fuel tap to the on position DOH! I'm such a numpty sometimes.

If the problem goes away after a few minutes of riding then it may be an issue with the auto choke not working properly. If it does it all the time even when the engine has warmed up then I'm not sure.

On another note I got about three streets from my house today when the chain came off. I'd heard that they can get loose and need tightening on a regular basis. When I put the chain back on it was very loose so I'll have to read up on how to tighten it before I use it again. Thankfully it didn't break anything when it came off.
