Our car is designed to tow up to a maximum of 1000kg. We are looking for a new (used) caravan - what would you suggest should be the max unladen weight (allowing for awnings, food and all other items to take with us - average couple!)?

Other half is concerned about this aspect - need to verify as have heard of one or two really nice vans available at present. Any advice much appreciated! (Change car perhaps!!!)
Thanks

Hi caro,
It is getting pretty hard these days to find full size cvans of any decent size under 1000kgs,
Even the lightest that my company sells, the bailey discoverys start off at around 900kgs, they dont have blinds or electric room heater, so that they can be kept as light as possible.
Other people who deal in other makes might have knowledge of a few, i know Lunars are the lightest in their class, but iv'e heard they can be a bit problematic with damp sometimes, so they really need to be tested for damp thoroughly.
Avondale might do something too but the same problem applies.
The little elddis 362 2 berths will be in the under 1000kgs i'd think.
But they are really small.
Ive worked on 1 or 2 micros like the freedom microlights and knaus's but they really are tiny, i think a trike could tow them.

Thanks Keith. Saw a Bailey Ranger (1997) today which is supposed to be only 12ft internally - and also quite light - under 800 if I remember right. Seem to be few and far between these days as you say. Really want to avoid damp at all costs - so may have to pay over the odds for a smaller van in the end! And settle for a combined toilet/shower room - would have preferred separate but hey hoh! one has to compromise! Seems a shame when can also get latter at a similar price - but longer and heavier!

well i'll check at work tomorrow but im pretty certain that the rangers are heavier than the disco's, they certainly have more in them, theyre a nice dry van usually.

No probs.
Right ive copied a tech sheet out of a 2002 bailey handbook, now discoverys arnt listed in it but rangers are, so heres the list for 2002 rangers.
380/2 =833kg mro =1027kg mtplm (maximum technical permissable laden mass)
460/2 = 907kgs mro= 1104kgs mtplm
470/4 = 935kgs mro= 1154kgs mtplm
500/5 = 1009kgs mro= 1250kgs mtplm
520/4 = 1007kgs mro= 1245kgs mtplm
550/5 = 1046kgs mro= 1300kgs mtplm
thats the lot.
the pageants start with the majestic at 950kgs, to max 1133kgs.
have fun deciding what u want.
but i still think the discos will be slightly lighter.

Bless you Keith!! Gosh I am learning a lot this week - feel far better equipped to go and look for a caravan now than I did before! Thank you for all your trouble.
