We've spent the last season sailing round the rivers of the east coast (Roach, Crouch, Blackwater). In general, we've much prefered the seclusion of an anchorage to the noise and expense of the marinas.

What are the 'rules' for using buoys on the river? It would be nice if once or twice we didn't have to go through the ringmarole of bedding the anchor in, then getting covered in mud when we haul it back up again. I'm sure my husband would also sleep much more soundly if he wasn't constantly worrying about the anchor dragging.

Hi Ian
It is not courteous to use a mooring without the owners permission, and it is illegal to tie up to a navigation mark. Visitors moorings abound in places like this and are controlled by the Harbour authority who will tell you where they are. Some boatyards also have moorings available
Your dilemma is that it is much safer to take the pain of using your own anchor and warp or chain as you are able to check its condition, or trusting to a mooring who's condition is not known and who's owner may return in the wee small hours causing him grief and you embarrasment. Hope this helps
