heating room thermostat

Mother is 85 and getting fed up with jumping up/down to turn her heating on/off so wanted a new stat fitted, the old one was a Bi- Metal type of thing that hasent worked since she had a new boiler fitted, other then using it as an on/off switch. She needed somthing simple, no digits, just a basic stat. Out i went, and purchased one from Focus, a simple RS room thermostat made by Tower, range 5c to 35c rated at 10a/240v. Got home and removed the old one. All looks easy, only two red wires and two black.....one black had been tucked away not used. On goes the new unit...No 1 terminal as instructions = Live/red No 2 terminal not used. No3 terminal, conect to N = black. No 4 terminal, this opperates a neon light, well according to the instructions. So far i the only time i can get it to work is juggle the wires onto differant terminals, then the boiler don't switch on. I have been at it all day "nothing else to do" but so far all i have ended with is the heater is on permanent. No Neon. So what looked like a job simple as changing a tourch battery has turned out a pain in the bum. Any advice please.
