Power Steering Problem with my Fiat Punto

The steering needs a new assembly. The battery light and cutting out need to be looked at to find out the cause.
I've also been having intermittent power steering failure with my 2000 Punto. It generally happens when the engine is cold, i.e. in the mornings. It can cut out after a few seconds or 20 minutes. I've been to a couple of garages, only one of which suggested a new ECU was needed. But, I've also been having other problems: the engine occasionally stalls when I'm idling in traffic (one garage suggested a new mass air flow sensor, which worked for a while but has since stalled twice). Also, the engine suffers from the occasional poor restart (requiring a jump-start last week). My point is, in anyone's experience, could each of these problems be attributed to the ECU, or has my Punto simply started to resent me? Ta
Read it here that turning using full lock on the steering wheel can actually burn the motor out because it keeps on trying to turn in the direction you are turning. Is this true and Has anyone here got any problem prevention tips? Thanx All Great Site this Pre-loved!!!
I have just had this problem develop on my Y reg punto. Bad timing as am selling in the less than three weeks and leaving the country! It started off intermitant, but now is a perminant problem. I have checked fuses (and the spare key trick!) but with no success. Is there anything else I can try before getting it to a garage? Thanks.

has just in the last few days developed the problems discussed on this thread. Had the car over a year and almost a year ago now the electrical power steering failure light came on whilst driving along a straight motorway with no turns, it stayed on for over an hour and then went off when i stopped and restarted the engine. Very Strange thought me !! As it had now gone i ignored the problem i thought nothing more of it, until sunday night there after doing alot of driving in and around town and using the city park button for some tight parking spaces ! i stopped the car and had accidently left the city (stupidily pointless button ON!and when i restarted the engine the steering was so heavy and could bearly move the car. The steering had just died!! I checked the owners manual and quickly realised the problem,as being that of the (electrical power steering) and that the car wil and still does have motability but requires super human strength to turn the car in a tight street etc. I am just wondering is the best option to take it to a local garage for a cheaper view on the problem or visit the fiat mechanics and pay extortionate prices .Ireally dont want to as the car is only worth approx 1200 now at most !! And will driving IT have as much strain on the steering column/rack etc as it does on my arms ? Please advise asap Thanks in advance , Regretful Fiat Owner !!
My situation is, 2001 Punto 1.2 MIA. Bought just over a year ago. Last week, the power steering failure light appeared on two seperate occassions whilst doing 3 point turns. Turned engine off, back on, fine, let it pass. Came to go to work the monday morning, the light then stayed on. Took the car to a local garage, with some difficulty, ironically as I pulled onto the forcourt it started working again. Basically said they didnt know what was exactly wrong with it, they hadnt got the technology, ie they werent able to connect to the ecu, they had dealt with problem before though and they quoted me £600 for a fully reconditioned steering column, which would solve the problem. I rang another local garage, described the problem, again the same, £600, a whole new steering column. The mechanic did suggest buying from the internet, or the parts seperately. Read through this with interest obviously, only thing that isnt clear is what I should be looking to buy myself. As it appears it could be a number of things, as I dont know the specific problem im really unsure what im looking at, and I dont particularly want to part with any uneccessary money, is there a product that covers a number of problems and apppears to work for a majority, from somewhere such as bba reman? Thanks for any help Adverts Currently On Preloved - Place an ad here for free
I got a new part from BBA reman, excellent. what mroe can I say. Apparently there are three parts that go wrong, the ecu, not replacable on its own, the actial column, not replaceable on its own or the electronic motor, not replaceable on its own, the only thing is to by the whoe thing. if you do the aution on ebay from the bba reman page you only pay 165,oo plus delivery so donet do the buy now... I have checked and checked, even went to fiat and ask them to do something, which they did not... That is it I'm afraid mate.. Craig
Well I went ahead and bought the whole thing, did the bid option, starting bid was £200 mind, ended up paying £220 plus postage. Which is alot less than the £600 ive been quoted for. Mechanic has said he will fit for £30. Once thats done, im selling it. My first car has taught me to never buy a fiat again. Any takers? ;)
I haven't had my Punto long (Y reg, 1.2) and am already having problems!! It broke down on my 4th day at a new job and the replacement Punto they gave me broke down the following day too!!!!!!!! Selling it is not an option at the mo. When it broke down the head gasket was replaced but now I have noticed a kind of rattling noise coming from within the steering column. Is this normal or something to be concerned about?? It happens both when going quite fast and also slow.
been to 3 garages one said its the plug under pump yeah.. next its the battery// then its the pump.. but according to this site go straight for a complete steering unit .
