It could just be a poor connection. Make sure you disconnect the battery and wait 15 minutes before you start poking around the wiring.

Hi

I am having intermittent power steering failures with my 1999 Punto Sporting 1.2.

I have purchased the power steering pump etc and fitted it myself, whiuch took a while but got there in the end.

Now the failures have stopped but the only problem i am currently having is turning right is a lot easier than turning left, can any one suggest an adjustment i can make to rectify this problem?

I have had the tracking done so its not that

Hi. It is possible that you have got a faulty unit.

Fiat Punto Power Steering.

Let me give you the hard facts from my perspective. I am 58 years old and have worked on everything from E-Type Jags to Austin Cambridges; from BMWs to 4x4s. We had a 2000 Punto 1.2 ELX in the family. This intermittent power steering fault started.

I checked all internal fuses, all main fuses; I checked all electrical connectors associated with this unit. I stripped down the panel around the steering wheel to find to my horror this awful little electrical motor they use (there are no 'pumps' as someone mentioned!). At this point I realised I was 'beaten' - which in 40 years of motoring was not a pleasant experience.

Upon seeing this I obtained a 12 month MOT (it was working thankfully on this day!) - and took the darned thing to Auction. The Auction cost me £175 in fees but it went under the hammer at nearly £1600 so I was pleased with what I got. I feel deeply sorry for the person - if it was a private buyer who bidded for it - but this is life.

I'd just simply say - leave well alone. Fiat have lovely user friendly designs but please consider a Micra, Yaris, - or even a Corsa or Fiesta before you buy a Punto.

Hi. Sorry to spoil your happy ending but a lot of modern cars use electric or electro / hydraulic power steering, though the Fiat units do fail more than most, vauxhall are a close second. If you want trouble free motoring then buy a bicycle.

Hi and goodbye to all.Have read this thread with interest over the months while i endured constant grief from the wifes 2001 sporting.Steering has been just one of the issues with it working one day then not the next despite replacing all components. It has now just popped its 3rd head gasket on its second engine and this is with normal use and quality work being done.Dont know what to replace it with as i am a bit of a petrol head would love an Alfa or something with character but just cannot get my heart to rule my head.Time to move on i think to something german or even french.BEST OF LUCK TO ALL

I have just started to experience power steering problems with my 2003 Fail Punto (actually typed that by accident but it seems apt!). It's been one thing after another and on top of a finance loan it's working out to be very expensive. I was given a quote for £633 plus labour and VAT to replace the Steering Shaft but i simply can not afford this, especially when it's an intermittant problem and not constant.

It has only cut out 4 times but i nearly ended up in a wall on the last occasion. Does anyone else see a pattern emerging - it seems to be a general fault with the punto along with dodgy exhausts (mine fell off twice, back section 1st and then the front). I really feel like getting Watchdog involved as this is clearly a common problem and we should be able to get this rectified with out a charge. Who agrees?

Hi. On othe actual unit you will find some numbers, I think there are three large ones, these are the ones you need to quote when getting a replacement. Don't get a secondhand one, it is such a common fault that it would be false economy. Go to BBA-REMAN and get a recon unit.

Hi

As long as the 4 digit serial number on the bottom is the same, it starts with a 6 you should be ok

Hi. It is the same 90% of the time it is the power steering unit, it obviously isn't up to the job, Find a local INDEPENDANT garage to replace the complete unit. Don't go to Fiat, after all they are the one's who designed the pile of rubbish in the first place.

hello, i went to two people who told me its the power steering column that i need to replace, and that they would charge me 50-60 pounds to change it for me, i didnt bother to have a diagnostics check done as i did enough research online to tell me that it would have been a waste of time and money, so iv bought a re-conditioned unit from BBA-Reman (http://www.bba-reman.com/) (see ther website & keep an eye out on ebay u might save a few bob on there). i paid online for the unit yesterday so hopefully itll be here soon, ill be looking to have it replaced on tuesday, ill let you know how it goes!

So do you have the same problem? the steering wheel light is always on and your power steering doesnt work at all? mine went off luckily after i had driven all the way back from blackpool! the problem as first wen i started my car if i turned it off then it worked but when i tryed to trick it on monday it didnt fall for it!! and so i put so ps fluid in and water and then it came on again! i was happy but now this morning its not working again!!! how much do you think it will cost? also i looked on another forum and it says to turn off your heaters and then PS might work as when use to much electric- in the winter- it might cut off PS to supply everywhere else. Im not sure if it works but im gunna try it in a while!

Can you try not to abbreviate too much, I'm not up on shorthand and I need to decipher the message.
