I got a new column from bba-reman, then got my local garage to fit it. The unit was £187 with delivery. It cost me three hours labour - very cheap at half the price as *!#%!@ fiat wanted over a grand, PLUS VATgo to http://www.bbc.co.uk/watchdog and tell them about it

hmm i dont think any mk2 puntos and above need powersteering fluid...hope you didnt put some in your brake fluid lol...i noticed mine went when it started to get really really cold last week, came back on after a day r so then went again the same night and hasnt come back on...im getting used to driving without powersteering now, reminds me of my older cars lol....my left side rear light has messed up too, dont know if its linked with something to do with the powersteering going, my rear light and brake light seem to flash when i indicate, and my indicator light shows on when i brake! .......................................................................................... yes mate iv reported it on the watchdog website, wrote them a nice little story lol...hope soething gets done about, i well think fiat should of had a product recall, and should still have one...its not fair on us :(

Hi. Your lighting fault is either a bad earth connection on the plug or it has the wrong bulb

I think you definately need to find a garage, most of the filler caps have a picture of what it's for or data on what you should put in there.

im sure the fluid in the top left thing is brake fluid, im sure there is no powersteering fluid needed in puntos its all electrical, it would be best to ask at a garage or check the handbook again...i dont have one othwise id have checked! if it is the brake fluid 100% id suggest u have ur brakes bled and have it refilled, hope that makes sense lol... iv had dodgy wiring since i bought the car, i had the horn & wipers sorted as they where juddering, and the indicator to show a bulb is not working normally shows on my dash although all my bulbs work, i think thats due to some sort of loose wiring as when have my bass kikin it flicks on & off with the vibrations

I have also reported it to watchdog. We shouldn't all have to pay out for this problem - Fiat should be liable as it's their faulty parts causing this problem. Please, Please, Please - can as many people as possible report this. http://www.bbc.co.uk/watchdogThanks H

I've contacted Watchdog with the following.. if everyone else does the same maybe we might get a response! Fiat Punto ELX 16v 1.2 2001
As with many other Punto's, mine developed a fault where the power steering failed intermitently then totally. This is a very common fault in Punto's - obviously a manufacturers defect, and I believe Fiat should be reimbursing their customers instead of fobbing us off telling us it's driver error (overuse of the City button, which I rarely used). Fiat themselves wanted over £600 to replace the steering unit (on a car that hadn't even done 40k miles!). Fortunately I found a company who sell reconditioned units and had it fitted at a local garage, at total cost of £240. There are plenty of others who have had the same problem: http://forums.preloved.co.uk/fuseaction-foru......0/241a8171.html http://www.fiatforum.com/punto-guides/70703-punto-steering-column.html Hopefully others will have also contacted you about this matter and you will be able to take Fiat to task!

I agree, deffo go to http://www.bbc.co.uk/watchdogthe more people that report this the better chance of someone as big as the BBC doing something about the robbing Italian bas***ds. Fiat know about this problem and have done nothing. The more people that reoprt this the more chance we have of getting our money back...

Ive never used a forum before but having suffered power steering failure on my Y reg 1.2 Punto Mia last night I felt compelled to join in. Im so pleased I stumbled across this forum as I was just about to call the Fiat dealer, but having read the posts of you fellow sufferers I will now call the local garage instead.I drove home from work last night (interestingly it was the first freezing cold night for a while) and had to call in at a shop on the way. The shop was in a narrow side street and involved some manoeuvring using the City mode to get into a tight parking spot. All was well. When I got back into the car five minutes later, the steering had died a sudden death. It was virtually impossible to turn the steering wheel and the City light remained on despite my frantic pressing. The AA man came to my rescue but couldnt do anything except check the battery and fuses, and advise a trip to the Fiat dealer. He took the fuse out so that the power wouldnt suddenly cut in should it decide to work again and said it would be ok to drive, if a little heavy at slow speeds. He wasnt kidding! It was only the fact that he was watching when I drove off that gave me the super-human strength required, and each corner on the journey home was approached with dread. I've had the car since February and while I have had a couple of other problems (including an exhaust that keeps coming loose despite going back to the garage 3 times, as mentioned by someone else on here!) there's not been so much as a hint of a steering problem. Will let you know what happens. Thanks all.

Hi. The only option is to replace the whole assembly. BBa-reman is probably the best place.
