yes MH ur rite ther it is dangerous. also the best thing to do, would be to get a part from bba reman and have it replaced, they give a two year warranty too so its well worth it. keep an eye on ebay they have a shop on there you mite save a few quid cuz they normally start £50 cheaper than their website...

I believe yo are all making life a bit difficult after having a problem with a punto steering for the last two years. It might be a sensor or a loose connection but try having the alternator tested. The steering relies totally on betery power and if the alternator is not giving power to the battry the first problem will be the power steering which takes thee most power. Having had a new alternator fitted we once again had a problem with the steering only to find out it was solely due to having the wrong alternator on the car, the one they fitted was not giving enough power for the power sreering to work properly. If your light is on you should try jump starting it from a running engine or high power battery. All fiat talk about is very costly repairs and I believe that its just a powe fault from the alternator a more powerful alternator fixed the problem.

Hi, if it was purely an electrical fault, BBA would have a lot of returns to deal with. It may be true in a small number of cases but the majority are doen to poor manufacture, poor design and just the fact that the cars are Fiats.

i think i'd have to agree with this fella,
i was having steering problems with my punto for ages going on and off. in fact the steering died completely for about three weeks. it just so happened that i had been driving my car a lot less and the car also has a power draining alarm system which meant the battery was getting run down without me even driving it.
so when the battery died completely one weekend i bought myself a battery charger and sat the battery on charge for 24 hours.
as if by magic the steering hasn't failed once since and now i only use the alarm system if i'm parked in a particularily dodgy area
so i'd charge your battery first and see wot happens...!!!

try charging your battery fully first see if that sorts it out
the sterring uses the most power and won't work if it is drained beyond a certain point

let me know if it works

*******PLEASE ANYONE WITH FIAT PUNTO POWER STEERING PROBLEMS****

PLEASE GO TO http://www.BBC.CO.UK/WATCHDOG AND REPORT IT

THIS IS A FIAT PROBLEM AND THEY WASH THEIR HANDS OF IT.
I HAVE CONTACTS WITHIN FIAT AND WHEN THE PROBLEM FIRST STARTED FIAT DID RECALL THE CARS BUT AS IT COST SO MUCH THE TOP BOD AT FIAT STOPPED IT.

YOU ARE NOW ON YOUR OWN.

I REPLACED MY WIFES WITH ONE FROM http://www.BBA-REMAN.COM (VIA EBAY) AND IT COST ME THREE HOURS LABOUR TO FIT.

GO TO THE BBC THOUGH, IF WATCHDOG CANNOT HELP NO ONE CAN

Hi all, My power steering went whilst trying to go around a roundabout on saturday! It comes and goes and is very unpredictable, it takes both arms to get half a turn either direction! I've got a 54 plate 1.2 8v and took it back to FIAT this morning to find out whats going on.

FIAT found that my...steering column motor torque position sensor had died and that it needed to be replaced!!....for £300 for just the part and £490 with VAT and fitting!!!

Anyone know anything about this i've been reading previous messages and realised this is a common problem....what really annoys me is that the warranty only ran out a few weeks ago!!!

I just wanted to say that for three years I have been having the same problem with a punto. Charge the battery to see if this works. If not then think about a new rack (complete) the softwear is not compatible if you onle replace a part. Steering needs 13amp to open. Does the light go off and then come back on when you start the engine. BATTERY City doesn't work if your power steering light is on. No electric to make it go. Just to say alot for fart I had the wrong side light bulb fitted in the car from new. Just found out from an electrician thats why I had a warning light now and again from the lights. Fiat could not find a problem. Plus they fixed a new headlight bulb upside down and I had planes coming down thinking it was the runway. DONT trust a fart it can usually leave you in a mess.

Amazing to find this forum!! I have the exact same problem with my Punto 1.2 Dynamic, I lose power steering and the red steering wheel warning light comes on. I figured out after it happened a few times that it's when the steering wheel is at full left lock, exactly the same as everyone else. The car's only done 7,000 miles in just over 2 years so still under warranty. Due to be checked in to FIAT garage today for repair. I'm printing off everyone's complaints from this forum to show them I know this is a known problem. I also contacted BBC's Watchdog programme as suggested - hope enough people will do the same because FIAT should issue a safety recall on these cars.

Will let you know what the garage will say but I suspect I know already they'll fob me off after charging £63 for diagnostic tests...

Just to let you know that I ordered a punto power steering unit from BBA-Reman (via Ebay) it came the next day, costing £217 which included VAT and P&P. My local mechanic fitted the part for £50 yesterday, so far so good. This was a huge saving on the quote Fiat gave me for the repair:-£631 plus VAT!!! Hope this helps anyone out there with the same problem as I know from experience that it's a real nightmare.

Hello, The power steering on my 2001 1.2 Go failed when I locked the wheel to the left about a week ago. The power has not worked since and even the city button offers no assistance. My local garage told me that I needed to take the car to a fiat dealer for a diagnostic test. When I called the dealer and explained the problem the person on the phone said "sounds like you need a new steering column!" I asked how much this would be and the answer was £600 + Vat. I am not very reassured by the telephone diagnosis from Fiat and cant help thinking that I will 'need' a new column regardless of whether I actually do!!

I have actually taken the car to the garage that referred me to Fiat and they tell me the connections are fine and that they can’t do any more.

I can not believe that a fault caused by one of the basic movements you make in a car does not have a relatively straight forward solution! I will definitely pursue the Watchdog complaint route as I think Fiat should be accountable for such a common and fundamental flaw. I also feel like contacting Matt Albright on Rogue Traders to see if we can test the validity of Fiat's diagnostic testing.

If any one has any further information or information I can give to a non fiat trained mechanic which could help diagnose the problem and expedite the repair I would be very grateful. I will try charging the battery, though I am certain this is not the cause, as the problem was clearly caused by locking of the wheel to the left.

Thanks.

the problem is no longer a problem to fiat I feel just to the fools who buy their cars because they obiously don't want to know. No matter where you are you still get the same answer from fiat without so much as them looking at the car, so, they know what the problem is but wash their hands of it and hope it will go away. bba reman seem to have alot of work coming in. maybe they want to sell shares that we can buy to get a better car

PLEASE...

READ ALL THE MEAASGES ABOUT THIS.

THERE IS NO OTHER OPTION, FIAT WILL WANT TO CHARGE YOU OVER A GRAND TO GET THIS SORTED - BELIEVE ME, I KNOW.

GO TO EBAY AND TYPE IN THE SEARCH ENGINE FIAT POWER STEERING.
YOU WILL SEE A COMPANY ON THERE BBA-REMAN.
BUT THE COLUMN FROM EBAY AS IT IS CHEAPER, IF YOU BUY DIRECTLY IT IS £225.00 IF YOU BUY FROM EBAY IT IS £165.00.
THEN GET YOUR LOCAL GARAGE TO FIT, THEN YOU CALL BBA AND THEY COME ABD COLLECT THE OLD STEERING UNIT.

THERE IS NO OTHER WAY.
BEFORE YOU DO THIS HOWEVER, CONTACT THE FOLLOWING http://www.BBC.CO.UK/WATCHDOG (LORRAINE EVANS) AS THEY ARE INVESTIGATING THIS MATTER AND HOPEFULLY WILL GET SOMETHING DONE.

PLEASE COPY AND PASTE THIS TO ANYONE ELSE WHO YOU SEE ON THIS WEB SITE ASKING SIMILAR QUESTIONS ABOUT THE STUPID ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING THAT FIAT FIT TO THEIR CARS...

I took the car in for repair and FIAT replaced the torque sensors. Fortunately for me the car was still under warranty (just!) so it was done for free, otherwise it would have been around £300.

I did print off messages from this forum to show them I knew and they must know it's a common fault i.e. not just my car. However they refused to accept that the steering column needed to be replaced and said if I have to come in again "FIAT will look at doing the repair for a reduced price as a goodwill gesture". My next move is to sell the car asap!!

I spoke to Trading Standards about the loss of power steering and they were v. interested in the safety aspect. They suggested contacting VOSA.gov.uk who trace all vehicle safety recalls. Maybe it would help if we all contacted Trading Standards and VOSA.
