I have the same problem with my Punto. Normally it only happens when I am low on fuel. Apart from today of course when it happened right in the middle of my MOT. The guy at the garage failed my car for this and told me i needed a whole new steering column which would cost around £600.

hi, i just took my car in as part exchange and got £650 for it! :( although may give hope for people who think their car is unsellable with no pas! mine passed its MOT ok even with the light as the car still drives ok so i dont know why in another comment its says their car failed?!

When i part exchanged i went back in and my car is up gfpor £1795!!! and he said the motor needs to be fixed which is only about 200punds compared to the £1000 i heard in this dicussion when i had mine it sounds alot better! i hope this will help people out!- i got a puma and thats playing up too i made a new discussion if any1 wants to help! i think i may just be unlucky in motoring!!! - to be honest i think i would rather have my punto back now! regardless of powersteering!

Happy motoring- at least punto drivers will have big muscles!

Are Watchdog actually going to do anything about this? I contacted them over two months ago and haven't heard anything back from them.

I really don't know why he failed my car as its not dangerous to drive. I'm not paying another £50 for an MOT though so am going to try and trade it in at the weekend

It was about August.
I am just sitting back and waiting.

Hi. McGuiness, Your car should fail the mot if the steering is playing up, it is dangerous. whty not just get a recon column then you will have a reasonably reliable car, other than the clutch, ecu, coil, headgasket and rear suspension. I'm sure there are some things that I have missed.

Ye me to, havent even heard back from the garage as to what exactly i need to do to the car. If i get it through the NCT in a fortnight, i probably start looking for another car. Never liked it to drive anyway, the view out the back window i very poor, was never comfortable driving it, maybe im just too small.

Hi guys

My sisters power steering light came on a few weeks ago, wot a nightmare. With me going out to buy the car for her, i felt some what responsible and took it on to get it fixed, i know what was i thinking buying a fiat. I took no noticed of what people told me about fiats and thought they cant be that bad. i couldn t of been more wrong. Anyway took it to fiat they want £600 *!#%!@ to that, so i takes it down to a car diagnostic place and they couldn t help, so i then turned to this forum to get some info and i tried everything from checking fuses and wires to charging the battery, no joy. Basically that light means your pump is f***** and you need a new one.

So i heard of this bba reman place that ev1 was talking about so i looked into that. To my dissappointment it was still costly, they wanted £250 for part then there was pakaging and postage cost which were £20 plus you have to send them your old one back £20 again. So were up to 290 then a garage to take it off and fit the new part which was £50 and that was cheap as i new the lad. I dont know about yous but my eyes water of the thought of handing that sort of money over to fix your car.

So heres wot i did and i hope this will help any of yous with that dreaded red steering light on your dash. Ring as many motor car salvage places around your area till you get your hands on one and fit the B******* your self. I paid £75 for the part, got a receipt and told him if it did nt work ill be bringing it back. I then started taking the steering pump out, Im no mechanic and no not much about cars so its definatly do able, just took my time and took notice of eveything i unsrewed and put it back the same way. and would you adam and eve it, the light went off and the car is running perfect. Get in there now the car is getting sold this week, DONT BUY FIATS, hope ive helped.

I dont know where you saw £250.00 fro BBA remain.

If you go on ebay, to their shop, you can get it for £165.00 plus £17.00 postage (for the return of your old one)

I paid about £183 i think it was, and two hours labour form my local garage.
sorted and no dirty hands...

I hope you contacted bbc.co.uk/watchdog?

Craig

Hi. Although a second hand one might seem a good idea , as it is such a common fault, unless the second hand part is a replacement it is likely to fail anyway.

But with BBA Reman it comes with a two year warranty.
By that time you can get rid of the Fiat you have and get a Fiesta or Corsa (watch Vauxhall though, some of them have electronic power steering)

I'm giving in, the power steering failure on my 2003 Punto is very intermittent so it's impossible to judge when it's going to fail. I'm going to take it to Fiat to be repaired so i'm going through the right procedure, if Watchdog actually do anything will people be able to claim any mobey back if they use BAA/ ebay for the part?? I first reported this problem to Watchdog well before christmas and haven't heard anything from them, so maybe i'm wasting my time and my money??

Hi

Please can anyone help me!!!PPPLLEEAAASEEE
For the last few months my steering has felt different like the power steering wasnt working properly(not really noticable)
So i asked me dad to look at it and he said 'its in your head feels fine to me'.......So.............after another 2/3 weeks i was driving (still thinking there is something wrong) and my steering light comes on...I KNEW IT!!
So i take it to the garage and they put it on dianoisc machine and say that the 'Moment censor faulty' and this needs new column at £700 aarrgghh!!!
Ok i thought if this is going to make my punto all better than fine go ahead(wasnt that calm at time). ............but now i have it back the steering feels the same and still doesnt feel right but the light hasnt come on at all.
Is it me??is it in my head??? whats going on?...please help!!!?

Dan
