I dont think you are. I imagine watchdog have to have so many complaints before they can do anything. I would imagine that if and when watchdog actually report this, what ever you have paid out for the part and labour, Fiat will have to repay that.

HI, its not in your head, dont worry, i was getting the same response. But i know that the steering is basically gone, only for the city button, i wouldnt really be able to drive it. Im still waiting for an answer as to what the problem is by my garage. not looking forward to a price to fix it.

I am having the same problem with my w reg 1.2 Fiat Punto. i had the car a week and the garage agreed to fix this problem and supposed to of fitted a new ECU unit steering column and sterring wheel. it was fine when i picked it up. i have recently just getting my car back again after another week and today its done the same thing again gone off again. i know you can still drive it but its that heavy im really scared to. do you think its best if i just get a full refud from the garage as if it happens again it will be the 3rd time and i think ill have to pay for it this time. after reading all the comments im thinking about getting a full refund what do you think?

PLEASE... READ ALL THE MEASGES ABOUT THIS.
THERE IS NO OTHER OPTION, FIAT WILL WANT TO CHARGE YOU OVER A GRAND TO GET THIS SORTED - BELIEVE ME, I KNOW.
GO TO EBAY AND TYPE IN THE SEARCH ENGINE FIAT POWER STEERING. YOU WILL SEE A COMPANY ON THERE BBA-REMAN. BUT THE COLUMN FROM THEIR SHOP ON EBAY AS IT IS CHEAPER, IF YOU BUY DIRECTLY IT IS £225.00 IF YOU BUY FROM EBAY IT IS £165.00. THEN GET YOUR LOCAL GARAGE TO FIT, TWO HOURS LABOUR, THAT IS ALL, THEN YOU CALL BBA AND THEY COME AND COLLECT THE OLD STEERING UNIT.
THERE IS NO OTHER WAY. BEFORE YOU DO THIS HOWEVER, CONTACT THE FOLLOWING http://www.BBC.CO.UK/WATCHDOG (LORRAINE EVANS) AS THEY ARE INVESTIGATING THIS MATTER AND HOPEFULLY WILL GET SOMETHING DONE.
PLEASE COPY AND PASTE THIS TO ANYONE ELSE WHO YOU SEE ON THIS WEB SITE ASKING SIMILAR QUESTIONS ABOUT THE STUPID ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING THAT FIAT FIT TO THEIR CARS...
I AM GIVING THE BAOVE ADVICE AS THIS HAS HAPPENED TO ME (MY WIFES CAR) WE BOUGHT THE CAR SECOND HAND AND THE STEERING FAIL A DAY AFTER WE GOT IT HOME. ***THIS MUST BE REPORTED*** FIAT DID USED TO RECALL THEIR CARS UT AS IT WAS COSTING SO MUCH THEY STOPPED IT AND NOW CUSTOMERS HAVE TO GO IT ALONE
PLEASE READ THE ABOVE AND PASS ON.

I am surprised to read so many posts regarding watchdog, I am sorry to burst your bubble but Watchdog can only give some bad press, Fiat will never refund you the money you have paid out, the best thing you can do is to sell your Fiats and buy another make and tell your friends to do the same, the only wat manufacturers of any product take notice is if people don't buy the product.

hi there mate
Yes you can sort it out by getting a new unit, i went to a motor salvage place and got one off a car for 75 quid but the road that everyone else seems to be going down is through ebay off a company called bba reman, if you go down that route your looking at around the 250 pound mark to get it sorted, or if you do it yourself and go down my route it cost me 75 quid to sort it. choice is yours, good luck

So many posts on this subject, which I have never become involved in, I wondered whether anyone has stripped these jokers down and got to the bare bones of what the problem is with the units. It must be possible to get the most problematic components re-made, its not rocket science. If anyones prepared to look into it I will make half the effort. T.

The problem with going down the salvage route is that you've no guarantee the part you're buying is any better than the one you're replacing, it could quite easily fail a week later!
With BBA you're getting a reconditioned unit, and a 2 year guarantee.
I paid £160 including courier charges and £60 for a local garage to fit it for me. Almost a year later and I've had no further problems.

Me too! Bought my Fiat Punto new in 2001 and then when I decided to replace it a couple of years ago (unfortunately for another Fiat), the Punto was passed down to my daughter who had just passed her driving test. The fiat was a second car and as such had low milage and had always been reliable UNTIL last October when my daughter, who is now at University, phoned me in a panic to say that the power steering wasn't working, she phoned later to say that it was ok again. This has continued on and off since then, but is now more off than on. Like those before me, I have been quoted £600 plus labour to have it fixed! There is no way either my daughter or myself can afford this and when we can afford it I will follow the BBA-Reman recon part and local garage labour route - so thanks to all you who have gone before for your advice. I have emailed watchdog and will keep my fingers crossed that something is done.

fine to say get rid of the car. puntos are a load o crap, so why did you buy it? I have been there with the punto and free advertising for bba reman doesn't do me much good living in Greece. To think of a second hand part from a scrappy is not a good idea because it might just be your punto thats the scrappy, so its got the same problem. I bought a new motor from Fiat Italy. I was assured by Fiat that if the steering comes and goes its the motor thats faulty and after having the car for 6 years consider its a small fault to have. Annoying but small. The motor cost me 300euros delivered to my home. The sensor in the motor gets jammed up with magnetic crap, charging or even disconnecting the battery will most likely make it work again (for a while). Condensation causes problems within the car the nylon upholstery doesn't help, the motor isn't a sealed unit so unevitably it gets damp inside too. The punto is not a load a crap its a nippy roomy little car. I fit armchairs in the back of mine because its my job, not many cars of its size can do that. There are so many places in Greece to buy a motor from so why should it be so difficult for you lot in England who have everything that I do not. So get off your buts and do something about the punto you so loved when you bought it.

Interesting what malaka says, the cost of running and repairing a car is cheper now than ever before in history. The problem is many are looking for cost free motoring, its good that motorists dont have repair costs of 30 years ago. I run 2 automatic cars (cos I like them), and I would expect to pay £2000 for box overhaul in about every 100,0000 miles. The complainers bought their car for £1000's less cost than a comparable manufacturer, now they cant find £220 for a new motor, which will give another 6 years motoring.
