Mine too! I bought a W Reg Fiat Punto and have a problem with the power steering. Most of the time the steering is fine. Twice now though, generally after I've been using the steering a lot (parking etc) the steering warning light comes on the dash and the steering becomes so heavy I can barely move it.

If i switch the engine off and on again the light disappears. I took it to a garage and they said it was run by an electrical pump (no need for power steering fluid) and could find no faults at all.

There was talk of changing rack assembly or pump assembly but for extortionate prices and they weren't even sure this would fix the problem.

Where do I go from here?

Hi,
Your right there's no point changing the shaft as it will not solve the problem best advice i can give is when your town or parking make sure you use the city button as this will relieve stress on the power steering. Also on cold morning make sure it's on city mode for 10 mins or so to warm up the electrical pump, hope this helps let me know.

Hi, I've have a W reg 2000 Punto 1.2 ELX for 3 years and I thought I had just bought a dud. Power steering started cutting out about 6 months ago when turning sharp left, particularly when cold and moving slowly. There's a sort of grinding, juddering feeling and then it's gone. Also noticed a knocking sound coming from front passenger wheel arch on turning left. Anyone else noticed this and is it related or is the whole thing gonna fall apart on me? I haven't tried leaving the city button on yet but if anyone knows if this actually helps, let me know. Otherwise I'm gonna end up in the front grill of an oncoming truck! Thanks.

Grrr, my garage has just phoned me (they were going to replace my whole sensors and steering column from a newer '03 car) to tell me that the newer car ALSO has this problem so I am back to square one. If I knew my gorgeous yet obviously flawed little car would be prone to this problem I would never have bought it at all. I am scared something goes wrong when I have my two young kids in the car, I have no faith in it now, or Fiat for that matter.

if any ones power steering packs up replace the whole column not the ecu! also take the battery off and make sure you put the air bag back on before you re-connect the battery or the ecu picks up an air bag fault which fiat only have to reset £££££. This is from what happened to me.

If the ecu does pick up a fault dont let fiat tell you it needs a new this new that it worked before!!! it just needs reseting took less than 3 min when mine was done. You can often find these steering columns on ebay or a scrap yard. they burn them self out. To stop this from happening once you do get it working then dont do a full lock turn as the motor keeps trying to turn but cant and as a result burns its self out and the sensors. Just turn the wheel back a little from full lock. if you listen carefully you can often hear it trying to burn its self out. Hope this helps alot of you

Does anyone know if an air bag sensor of a crashed fiat punto can be reused? I have just bought a crash damaged punto, have replaced the air bags, but cant decide about the sensor. Cheers. Neil

Hi Graham,
You seem to know your stuff so i was wandering if perhaps you could advise me on what to do with my daughters punto.
Apart from scrap it of course.
She is about to pass her test and has bought a punto but the steering is really stiff and needs an almost herculean strength to steer it.
I am not sure if it has no power steering or if the power steering has packed up. How do i tell?
Also, would you know if power steering can be fitted if it was not there originally?
I can buy all the necessary parts and get it done but i would rather have some kind of knowledge before i go to the garage and get ripped off.
Thanks for your time.
Terry

What year is the punto model etc. Most new ones have power steering and if its not working the light will display on the dash. If it one of the old puntos they dont have powersteering and you cant on any car add it. Only takes a little while to get used to steering without powersteering. really depends on what yr model

Hi graham,
Thanks for answering so quickly,
Its an older model, 1998 (s registration) and it is the 60 sx.
the steering is really really heavy even considering that it may have never had power steering. is there any other reason that could cause this?
Terry

I had an old punto and it was exactly the same! you cant add powersteering so your either going to have to get used to it or sell it.

puntoproblems do you not think its a bit rude to class all garages the same when some people on this site might own one and give their advice for free?

ok mate........no probs.......

make sure tyres are a good make and same type are blown up to 32psi and i find them fine without power steering.........
i would have though quite easy as a diy proposition as the rack is fairly easy to get to up on stands and the pump bolts on top of the oil filter,it may have an electrical connection for pressure i cant remember but get to a scrappy and most "t" reg 60sx models had power see if you can do it?yourself

good luck.........

as i understand (well with mgtf anyway) the overuse of the steering will "cut it out" temporarily let it alone for a second or two and it should come back
the mgf i can cure in situ (they suffetr "steering bias" )
the fiats are usually driver error ( using the "sissy mode" all the time!

HI there

I had the same problem when i replaced my power steering part it didnt work, it turned out the new part was also faulty, I brought it second hand off ebay.

The light goes out automatically when the part is working it doesnt need to be reset.

The best thing to do is buy another part from BBa reman and its under warrenty for 2 years and contact the seller who sold you the other part and ask for a refund.

I have changed mine for one from BBA and now it works fine woo hoo!!

Good luck!!

p.s. this method saves you about 400 pounds!!

im sure they have, i knew chris swan quite well i have no problem with him.
i also worked at a power steering company for some 20 years and i too dealt with bba my only real issue was reconing of these particular systems and the astra pumps (hydro electric) one of we we stripped to see how it was done.
but they give a 2 year warranty
i found them a tad pricey for a lot of their parts.
