Jeez before reading this forum I thought I was the only one with this power steering problem! I have read through all your comments and found them very interesting! My V Reg Fiat Punto 1.2 ELX power steering started failing in September 2007 (come to think of it, it was after I had suffered a flat battery.) Symptoms were various but consistent with what others have experienced...a buzzing noise coming from the steering column, the power steering light coming on whilst driving and steering suddenly becoming so heavy I could hardly move the wheel. This could happen within seconds of pulling off, or minutes into a journey, happeing when I went round a corner or over bumps in the road. In September 2007 the I took it to my local Fiat dealership who did a diagnostic check (they charged me £70 for the privilege). They said that I needed a new steering column which would cost me over £600. My car is only worth about £1000 so was reluctant to spend £600 to get it fixed. FULLY CHARGING MY BATTERY HAS STOPPED THE PROBLEM FROM HAPPENING SINCE (touch wood). If the problem starts again I will probably purchase a reconditioned steering column. There's no way I'm letting Fiat rip me off again!!! I am also going to report my case to BBC Watchdog. They always report on brand new cars that have gone wrong - just because our cars are older,it doesn't mean Fiat should be able to shrug off this problem which is more widespread than I thought - we are still FIAT customers whether they like it or not - We can make them or break them - COME ON EVERYONE CONTACT WATCHDOG AND TELL YOUR STORY!

HEELLLPPPP!!!!!! my dad has just brought me a punto sporting reg 2000,i adore the car,its the ARBARTH type ,only had it a week ago, since then sometimes when putting on a full left lock, the power steering failure light comes on,then i lose power steering. The car has 3 mnths warranty, its been to the garage today, said he had looked at something in the steering column, but when i pulled off the forecourt it happened again.went back to tell the guy, said see how it goes.Reading some of the threads on the internet, they seem to lead me to believe it needs a new power steering motor, can anyone please clarify on this,as i can then go to the garage with a little knowledge.cheers sue.

As the car still has a warranty get rid of it. Give it back. The garage know what the problem is ans will fob you off until the warranty has expired then you have to replace yourself.PLEASE contact bbc.co.uk/watchdog Believe me they ARE investigating this problem. Look at the Renault Clio bonnet problelm, this is STLL being report by Watchdog - they will get there

Hi. Take the car back to the garage and insist that they repair the fault, if they mess you around, write to them stating that you wish to reject the goods under the sales of goods act as they are unfit for purpose. Also inform Trading standards.

Thanks for your quick responces.I will be contacting the garage shortly, they can deal with it.I really dont want to give the car back as it was a surprise (errm 40th birthday present, from my dad),the car is really nice, jet black,in excellent cond, apart from this pain in the backside problem. So if it can be sorted under the warranty, then all the better. Will keep you posted.........sue

I own a 2006 punto active sport (sadly). The steering has failed four times. Being under warranty my local dealer somewhat reluctantly agreed to repair but only when I couldn't even get it off the drive. Worked OK for a few months , then problem started again. I then received a phone call from Fiat in Italy asking me to conduct a customer satisfaction survey. Their phone bill was costly, besides this issue with steering, I have countless other problems. I was then informed that a recall to rectify the problem was necessary, new software to be installed. It has been one month with on problems (not holding my breath).

I have taken my punto sporting back to dealer i brought from,as still having problems with steering, light comes on and lose power steering sometimes when full left lock. The warranty was`nt worth a light, only covers for repairs upto £300.Anyway just brought new motor from BBA REMAN,cost me £315,then whatever to fit it by local mechanic. The only help im getting from the seller,is £100 as a good will gesture. This has worked out cheaper for me because,i would have had to of paid,£70 diagnostic, then it was going to cost £550 for part and repair.Bearing in mind,i was only covered for £300.I really love my punto, its a very smart car,jet black abarth sporting, but fiat really need to do something about this known problem,or will it take someone to have a serious accident for them to realise.Believe me you can not control the steering, once the power steering goes, its an accident waiting to happen.

Just a quick note:do bear in mind when ordering from BBA REMAN,the price you see £250,isnt the total you pay.£250 for part, carriage charge £18,VAT nearly £47,then if you donot return your old part within 3days,there is a surcharge made to your card of £70.Just thought i would forewarn people, although it is still quite a reasonable deal,as you get 2 years guarantee, which as we know, with the problem, you just might need it!!!!!.

totally agree, you can get the part on ebay from £200 bidding, thats where the bidding starts, but its not guaranteed to go for that price,as there is generally a couple bidding at one time.having said that there is still £17.50 shipping. You can get a better deal on ebay, rather than phoning direct, but the policy for returning is not very flexible, you have 3 days to return old part, otherwise a charge of £75 is deducted from the charging card.

The part must really be in demand then.. I paid around £180 for mine, (including shipping) on ebay around 12 months ago.BBA are very flexible if you call them... I couldn't get my car into the garage to replace the part for a week or so after it arrived, returning the part after a couple of weeks was fine with them, no extra charges incurred. You have to realise that they need your old part sent to them to refurbish for the next customer, otherwise we'd all be paying Fiat's rip off prices, which is why they charge what they do. Dawes... are Watchdog really looking into this? How do you know? I emailed them over 4 months ago and I've never heard anything back from them.

I ordered my part from Ebay, knowing it took three days foe delivery. I then put my wifes car in the garage and had the steering took out. When the new steering turned up - that I had delivered direct to the garage they fitted there and then. I then used the box it came in to ship back. The £17.50 is for the returm shipping. I then took the part to work, not heavy, called the number they gave me and they collected it two days later. As long as you call for them to colect within the specified time they cannot do anything, they have a record of it

PLEASE... READ ALL THE MEAASGES ABOUT THIS.THERE IS NO OTHER OPTION, FIAT WILL WANT TO CHARGE YOU OVER A GRAND TO GET THIS SORTED - BELIEVE ME, I KNOW. GO TO EBAY AND TYPE IN THE SEARCH ENGINE FIAT POWER STEERING. YOU WILL SEE A COMPANY ON THERE BBA-REMAN. BUT THE COLUMN FROM EBAY AS IT IS CHEAPER, IF YOU BUY DIRECTLY IT IS £225.00 IF YOU BUY FROM EBAY IT IS £165.00. THEN GET YOUR LOCAL GARAGE TO FIT, THEN YOU CALL BBA AND THEY COME ABD COLLECT THE OLD STEERING UNIT. THERE IS NO OTHER WAY. BEFORE YOU DO THIS HOWEVER, CONTACT THE FOLLOWING http://www.BBC.CO.UK/WATCHDOG (LORRAINE EVANS) AS THEY ARE INVESTIGATING THIS MATTER AND HOPEFULLY WILL GET SOMETHING DONE. PLEASE COPY AND PASTE THIS TO ANYONE ELSE WHO YOU SEE ON THIS WEB SITE ASKING SIMILAR QUESTIONS ABOUT THE STUPID ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING THAT FIAT FIT TO THEIR CARS...

I paid £180.00 for mine too, including delivery of the old part. I hv explained to sue, I called BBA first and asked about delivery time of the recon part, they said three days. Two days later I put my car in the garage and they stripped the old one out. Then the part turned up, and the garage fitted it. I then used the same box to sent the knackered part back. The next working day I took the part to work (not heavy to carry) and called the number stated, they collected withing three days. As long as you call then to collect within the three days you will not get charged. We were charged about £80.00 labour (he did us a favour) and he had the car about four days in total. Watchdog are looking into this as I have been spekaing to a woman called Lorraine Evans: BBC Watchdog / Lorraine Evans [Log in to view email] I have sent everything over to her, scanned copies of the book showing the 'city button' and other things. Everyone must contact BBC, look at the Renault Clio bonnet on the currently, Honda Civit Handbrakes and Vectra Hand brakes, do you think they looked at this overnight,....... Good luck

Hi Dawes, wish i had gone ebay for my part, but having a 2 year old baby,in the car with me at all times,i just wanted it done asap.Well i ordered part on friday, came monday, had it fitted 2day,my dad has his own transport business,so his mechanic fitted it for me,only cost £40.Well i phoned UPS to collect the parcel at 1PM today, they collected at 1.30pm today, super fast service or what.As i mentioned previously, the warranty on car only covered for £300,so to have it diagnosed it was £70,then it would have cost over £500 part and labour,so deducting the £300 warranty money,i still would have paid £270.But having done it this way its cost £315 part, then £40 labour, plus as good will gesture (very good of him,NOT) dealer is paying £100 towards it,so its only cost all in all,£255,with 2 years warranty, which to me is worth its weight in gold.
