now then back to the problem...a good mechanic will be able to fit a power steering unit no problem ,,just make sure that when you buy one that it has a good warranty on it..cheers...moz...
It is usually best to get someone to recommend a garage if you don't have one that you can go to.
don't know but asked many elecs got an answer from a young chappy who had searched on the web for the answer now working well and with the two year warranty offered by every one else including fiat don't know what else to tell ya but bba don't work greece
if i have an intermittent fault with my ps on my 2000 punto sporting 1. it might be the fuses i basically want to hear from anyone as to what the odds of it being the first 2 are as i will get it fixed if this is the case cheers
lost the electric assistance it is very intermittent the fault light comes on the dash after a while it goes out and the steering works also it pulls to the left when the fault is present correcting the Pull when back to Power steering.

Regarding the skittish behaviour, this could be dut to shock absorbers or the rear swinging arms having play in them ( another common failure)
ive just bought my W reg punto...ive had it a week...my power steering went on me..with no notice i dont know what happened but the guy i bought it off said he had it done bout 2-3months ago...im a new young driver and literally have no money!!! how much is it going to cost!!! ive turned the engine on and off it still doesnt work and neither does the city button...can someone please tell me where to go from here!!! and what was i doing wrong!!!!
had mine done recently and it was that some of the wiring had burnt together causing all kinds of problems. just a thought other than that it'll probs be the control unit as everyone else has reported bba reman do the units and you can get them through ebay. a decent garage will fit it for 60-80 quid so it'll probs cost you around 300 quid provided that is the problem
the negative connection from the battery was loose, thereby intermittently cutting the power steering out. Cleaning and tightening this attachment solved the problem. If your power steering has a tendency to cut in and out often, or for example cut back in after going over a bump in the road this is definately worth checking feel free to email me at [Log in to view email] if that doesnt make much sense. cheers and good luck! alex
Thanks for the reply I have also found that the connections to the Powersteering system do need to be tight in my case the 60 amp fuse F35 it is located in the fuse box under the bonnet next to the Battery the Positve Red cable from the Battery goes into the Fuse box. You can Identify the fuse by looking on the underside of the fuse box lid they are all numbered. The connector that the fuse is plugged into was also cleaned and tightened I do believe that the connectors are not man enough for the amps that are demanded to operate the steering. I thing it would be better with a nut and bolt connection for the fuse, of course it may still be another fault time will tell I will keep people informed. Kentman
The power steering itself is fine so hopefully its not a major issue but does anyone know what it may be and if it's a serious problem?!

I've got an X reg fiat punto ELX model - i took it to a garage who told me it would be around the £600 mark to get the power steering fixed, but from reading below i'm not sure this will solve the problem. Now, most of the time the steering is fine with no problems whatsoever - this car has been in the family all its life so i have all its previous history and nothing of this sort has cropped up before. When i turn the engine off and on again it seems to sort itself out, but recently when i've done so it hasn't so i'm driving with no power steering at the mo! The city button in my car doesn't work, or doesn't seem to? It used to until it was taken to a garage to be re-sprayed then all of a sudden it wouldn't work anymore *co-incidence* and also when they returned my car the power steering fault only started from then on. Ended up having a bit of a barmy with the garage but cos there was no proof this had happened due to the work they'd done - i was left with the problem. Could anyone recommend a "no-nonsense" garage in the Derby area, as i'm young, female and last time i went to a particular place they tried to rip me off! No offence to other garages (obviously)!! Alternatively a recommendation to solve the problem? My dad rebuilds classic cars but when it comes to fiat models & power steering, etc he's not 100% sure. Any help is much appreciated!
