Power Steering Problem with my Fiat Punto

Have same prob. Our Punto 53 reg has its P/S warning light on all the time now but the P/S still works. We have only had one prob - early very cold morning full lock to the left and the P/S cut out. I turned off the engine and on again and its been fine since. The garage guy said many punto's have the same prob and said it all would need replacing. I have read though some of your comments to find it could be an electrical problem (we have had that too with another system) or something else that won't cost us over 600 squids! What do you think? Why is the warning light now on all the time (had only come on occasionally before) when the P/S has been working (except for once). Hope you can help guys! thanks.
I've just had my punto fixed. The power steering column will need changing eventually - i bought one off the internet for £260 inc postage and it came next day. You have to fit this one yourself though. The power steering problem may not be permanent at the minute but i can assure you it will be in time... best to get one with a 2 year warranty on. Try http://www.ecutesting.com Also you need to be careful that you don't leave it too late - i carried on driving my car after the power steering had failed and shouldn't have done. The engine light then begins to flash and the car will misfire on No.2 Cylinder. This means the iginition coil will need replacing which is another £50. Again, that's the price if you fit it yourself. If you live in the Derby area i can recommend a good garage that don't fob you off unlike some main dealers. They're not a large company but are very reliable and explain the problem in great detail. Your only alternative would be to sell the car before it packs up... as bad as it sounds! Hope this helps!
It seems like puntos are all the same from 2001 on even new models I originally was from the Derby area , and if I was still there I would have possibly had more help with my car, alas you cant have everything. According to fiat you can change half the unit because the softwear is easy to change over when the new mechanics are changed. The steering WILL go eventually and not come back, the sensors fail altogether. The clutch was a bigger problem to me, no warning no nothing it just died at traffic lights and had to be pushed away and towed to the garage.
Unfortunately my problems are not all solved. In response to Holly you will NEED to get the power steering repaired whatever happens. Turns out the engine fault is partly a result of driving the car with the power steering failure. When performing a diagnostic test the ECU had blocked all access to power steering and was only showing the misfire fault - even though it was obvious the power steering had failed. I changed the ignition coil, this didn't make a difference. Turns out the ignition coil was fine all along. It's an ECU fault - which can often be misinterpreted as a coil failure. The ECU can range in price but is often around the sum of £140 inc next day delivery - and again... this is if you fit it yourself.
Thanks Sparky
The Power Steering Column will need replacing completely! This will appear if on the diagnostics test if you go to a garage to get your car tested. If you know a thing or two about cars i'd advise fitting it yourself and buying the unit for around £260 from http://www.ecutesting.com with a 2 year warranty. This will obviously be alot more expensive fitted at a garage. This may be a temporary problem for the time being but WILL become permanent in time. Being honest, there isn't much point in getting it fixed until it does become a permanent problem and the power steering has completely failed. My car lastest over 6 months with the intermittant fault. I wouldn't advise driving the car if this becomes a permanent problem. I did, and it ended up causing an engine fault. In my case the engine light began to flash on the dashboard & the car felt like it was chugging. This turned out to be the simplest problem after i'd spent alot of money trying to figure out what it was! First things first, check the plugs & leads connected to the ignition coil. This turned out to be the cause of my problem and are available from halfords for around £30. On a diagnostics test it will come up as the ignition coil is the problem - it's not!!! I spent another £60 on a new one and turned out my old one was perfectly fine! If you have any other questions, ask away! Hope this helps!
As happens needed to change battery as car not starting very well, hey presto no more problems with power steering! I thought perhaps as battery power low and PS not an essential as can still drive, just bloomin hard to park! all power left available went to essential componets ie lights etc. Had new battery for a year and no issue since. Rather spend £45 quid than over £600. Just speaking to our mechanic the other day and he said he'd heard on the grape vine, that if battery not holding more than 13volts the PS would not work. Worth a shot!
I have a problem with my 2000 Fiat Punto 1.2 HLX 16v. Occassionally I hear a knocking sound, like "tok tok tok tok" when slowing down the car and I feel a vibration in the steering. Sound is coming from the drivers side under the steering coloum. On smooth surfaces the sound is less, on uneven surfaces worse or louder. At first I thought it was the breaks, but they are new, replaced last August, new break pads, new discs. The knocking sound was also present before I changed the breaks. Then months passed by not hearing this sound, I thought whatever it was must have solved itself. I have never had problems with the power steering cutting off, or red light or whatever with the power steering. I have city on all the time, as I was told when I bought it car adjusts by itself when accelarating at higher speeds. The car is now 9 years old. Then it returned with like a vengance... Completely pissed off by this sound I went to the Fiat garage. At first they didn't know what was wrong. First they thought the rubbers were worn, or that something was wrong with the drivers side front wheel staff what holds everything up that it was loose and needed tighting. They told me to comeback the next day and they would look at it more in debt and run a diagnostic. Came back the next day waited an hour, mechanic cameby and said we have a problem. It seems that the steering coloum is worn and needs replacing, that is what is causing the knocking noise when stopping the car. I don't know if this is true, I'm not a mechanic to know. To change this would cost me about 900 euros excluding labour! The whole job would cost around 1100 euros! DAMN! I was totally shocked and pissed! I asked him can't just a part be replaced, or maybe a refurbished part. No dice! The car has driven almost 200.000 km. I have always kept it in a good condition, car looks like new even after 9 years! But because of the high mileage it is probably worth between 2.000 and 2.500 euros. I'm not going to replace a part worth half the value of the car. But I don't have money to buy another car at the moment either. He told me that I can drive with the car like it is. It can't damage the car any further, it just might happen that the powersteering can fail in the future, but it wouldn't mean that I would loose complete control, it would be steering the car without powersteering. Being a small car and I have driven cars and pickups before without powersteering, it can't be that hard. Has anyone experienced this knocking sound as I have described and have found a cheaper solution to solving this problem? If not, I think I will leave it as it is until it breaks down by itself and hopefully be in a better position to buy another car. This car is our sole means of transportation so if it breaks down we're screwed! So I would prefer to fix the problem if it doesn't cost that much. I'm open for all suggestions! I just hope someone can help me with this problem here on the forum. I don't trust Fiat garages, they always seem to fabricating ways on conning you out your money or giving you extremely overestimated prices! Adverts Currently On Preloved - Place an ad here for free
does anyone know what i can do the get the light off!!
I read about it on the web, when fixing up racing punto, talked with a electrician and a mechanic and they fixed it 300euro. Don't regret the money, love my little car. The steering will go off for longer and longer, then it just won't come back. Bet the fiat crash test was on a straight road
you mentioned on the forum that there is a place in stratford, do you know where in stratford or and more details?
My interest is if anyone knows how to reset the self-centring of the steering. (this is not related to the motor directly, but the angular sensor). My wheels were aligned after some new tyres and the self centring is slightly off to the side - not dangerous, just mildly irritating. I have heard on some other electric steering cars that there is a way of teaching the systems where dead ahead is, but I don't know if Fiat have anything easy like this outside the fiat dealers - who are outstandingly rubbish in every way......... Thanks
Takes about 15mins and cost me 10 euro.
We have a 2001 reg Punto with the same fault being the power steering warning light on plus the steering being very heavy.. Yesterday, started working outside the doctors!!!! This fault occurred same day that car was taken into a FIAT garage to diagnose another fault that was to do with the airbag warning light that was on permanently.. My wife paid over £80 to have the fault diagnosed which we were then quoted over a £1000 for a new passenger airbag.. We didn't have that done but the airbag warning light is now off!!! It seems a huge coincidence that the power steering failure occured on the same day as the visit to the FIAT garage.. Is there a connection between the two? I have checked through the threads and see that can get part from BBA-Reman for £210.. The other thing that is mentioned is the battery, could disconnecting and reconnecting cure the problem?
thanks
