Hi,
sorry previous message went a bit wrong!
I have also got a W reg 1.2 Punto where the power steering cuts out quite regularly now, I took it to Fiat who said I needed a new power steering motor which would cost £400, money I havent got! Does anyone know if this is the case or another solution to the problem? Cheaper the better!

had exactly same ps symptoms as you guys, i have y reg punto...seems fine now that i have fiddled around with the fuses in the engine fuse box! tried everything before hand.... the fuse that controlled my PS was the dark red on printed with a number 6 (six) on it! i removed it and blew into the receptacle and cleaned the points...replaced and hey presto it worked fine.

Having problems with noise coming from steering column in Fiat Punto 4 years old. The steering column gives a grinding noise, scraping noise and the steering wheel can also give a grinding noise when even sitting still. Have had it in garage where nothing was found! Just today have asked a second garage but he is unsure what it is. Has anyone experienced the same symptoms and if so was it repaired cheaply?!!!

Very interesting reading all! I'm afraid a bit late for me.... my X reg Punto is is having a new motor fitted tomorrow at Vickers in Shrewsbury tomorrow at a cost of £360.
Lets hope it works!!

this problem can be caused by many things from the vehicle speed sensor to the torque position switches the power steering motor or the steering ecu will need pluging in by a fiat dealer

my power steering packed up on me this last weekend, no warning lights nothing. now can hardly turn the steering wheel. i,ve had my punto for 5 years and never had a problem till now. i,ve read all your comments and noted your suggestions. however i do leave my city button on all the time as i only do about 4000mls per year (all local) could this then mean that the unit will need to be replaced as there has been no intermittant fault or prior problems

I had the same problem with my daihatsu.
The was an oil leak and I used a bottle of special sealer it sorted the problem.

just bought a punto y reg 2001 the city button do,nt work . power steering was working on the way home but stopped when restarted the car to go out again and now just noticed that airbag warning light is on I would like to know if you or anyone has any idea of cost to get theses flauts fixed or is it a possible DIY job

after working at a power steering company for 20years i may be able to help a little on this too
not ALL power columns have to be fitted or calibrated by a dealer
i beleive only the later ones
there is a guy in stratford who i used a lot who sells VERY good second hand units
DO NOT drive the car in city mode ( its only for parking) this will burn out the motor

hello!
i have read all of the posts and have found it very interesting! i have had my fiat punto for one year, it is a W reg 1.2 8v model. i have experianced a few problems with my second hand punto within the year of having it, however nothin too expensive!
i was very shoked this evening when drivng along the motorway that the red steering wheel light randomly came on and realised when i hit a roundabout that the power steering has failed!
(i was very upset and found it difficult to turn the car without it as i have never driven without power steering.)
i am having my cousin look at it tomorow howwever would very much apreciate any comments on this problem and how it can be resolved??
