I bought an exchange unit from BBA reman. Total cost was £286.00 for both CPU and motor. 2 yrs guarantee, better than Fart's. http://www.bba-reman.com/
Tips 1/ The cpu must have the numbers 6607 on it. This can be found under the steering column, take the plastic cowling off.
2/ Disconnect the Battery, and DO NOT reconnect it until the steering wheel air bag is reconnected. (or get Fiat to fit a new cpu)
3/ to get at the bolt that holds the motor to the shaft that goes down to the steering rack in the floor, undo the Torx bolt holding the steering cpu on. It's then easy to get at the 10mm bolt.
4/ Have some loctite handy for reconnecting the steering wheel nuts,
5/ Allow about 2 hours, but have the old unit out in advance of the new one being delivered, you have only three days to trun it around. UPS courier was very good.
6/ You will need at least, torx sockets, torxbits, (small ish) Allen keys, 23mm socket, 10mm socket 13mm socket, 3, 5 & 10" extensions, rachet
7/ Be carefull to get the ribbon cable under the steering wheel back in the same relation to the steering wheel, No of turns
8/ degree of difficulty? I found it, Easy.
9/ Don't buy a Fiat
10/ Dont disconnect the wheel height adjustent lever, this comes on the replacement unit.
11/ Don't buy a Fiat.

sounds like a scam to me, sorry. I would point out to the garage that you contracted for them to fix the problem. If they didn't fix it it's their problem not yours. Threaten small claims court, and get other transport ready while you argue. Usefull little book, "See you in court"

also second thought. WHat is the sympton on the main computer? Get a another local garage to read the fault code, they can often read it without being able to fix it. If the fault is airbag, the person fitting the motor turned on the ignition before refitting the airbag or didn't det up the ribbon cable under the wheel properly. Talcum powder will show up water, bet you can't find it.

Completely gutted. Just bought a lovely 51 reg Punto diesel and power steering failed on second day! Took the car back to the dealer who took it to an auto electrician who, surprise surprise, could find nothing wrong with it. I was considering keeping the car as it has not failed since that day but after reading all your posts, I think I'm better off getting rid while I still can. The dealer has offered me a full refund and, as sad as I will be to say goodbye, I think it's probably for the best.

Sorry but the cheapest way to rid your self of this problem is to get rid of the car and get something reliable... it's what I did did in the end after spending too much money!

Just wondered if anyone has ever contacted Fiat head office about this problem and if so what they're response was.

After 2 and half years of driving my Y reg ELX my warning light has come on and my power steering has disappeared, it's like driving a tank!

It's going into a local garage on Friday for the diagnostic check.... no way is it going back to a Fiat dealer for them to rip me off. Strangely enough he's just told me he's got a 53 plate sitting on the forecourt that's just had to have a new rack... this seems to be too common a problem for it not to be a manufacturers defect, my car hasn't even done 40k miles yet!

they all do, it is a common fault, in my opinion an inhernet defect. Go to bbreman, they seel the unit and cpu complete. When doing the changeover, DONOT turn on the ignition until everything is reconnected. Good luck, buy something else next time

Who did you buy the unit from? If it's failed within 200 yards I'd send it back as faulty.

I got mine from these guys on ebay (£182 inc courier) http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Fiat-Punto-Brav......1QQcmdZViewItem

and my local garage fitted it for £60

in my opinion, and thats only after 20 years in reconing power steering, these units can not be reconditioned.
otherwise this firm would not be the only people reconing them, by that i mean RECONING

Hi
I took my W reg Fiat Punto for an MOT, car working fine. Garage kept overnight and did a bit of welding and fixed horn and when I got it back the power steering fail light was on and city button doesn't work. Booked in for a dealer to look at tomorrow but was wondering whether this problem could have been caused during MOT?!

either amazing coincidence or, the welding or work has affected the CPU.(s) The jury is out on whether using a high amperage spark will affect electronics, but most people think yes. Which is why the manufacturers generaly tell you to disconnect the battery when welding on the car. Did the garage ask you for the radio code? If they didn't and it still worked they must have done the work with the battery connected. The other thing that could of happened is that the garage took the steering wheel off then turned the ignition on with the steering wheel still disconnected. They often do this to position the wheel fore and aft correctly, not knowing the problem wih the cpu. Apparently this screws the steering cpu as well. Back to the radio code question again. If I were in your shoes I would be expecing the garage to rectify at no cost. Talk to your local Trading Standards People, and/or CAB If the garage refuse, get someone who will put pe to paper to give an opinion, keep the bills, and pursue them through the small claims court.

Better still buy something else, chalk it up to experience, and look for a good garage.

Harrison,
I have recently bought a 2001 Punto ELX 8v.
The day I bought the car, the steering went..
I have read many forums and this is a common fault.
the car is booked in for a full diag check on Monday 2nd.
If found to be a new steering column I will get one from BBA.

I have contacted Fiat directly, wrote a very nice letter and asked for a little 'help' towards the problem.
Basically, they f***ed me off..
as the car is (just) 6 years old and has had a few owners (we are the 3rd) they are not interested in the problem..
Fiat want £933.00 plus VAT plus labour to fit new steering column, that is, after £52 for a full diag check...
I dont think so..

I am really f**ked off with Fiat and will not be buying another one.
My wife's car is immac cond and only 27k miles.....

firstly the car was probably faulty when you bought it. These units normaly fail on left turn, then reset when you turn the ignition off and on, then get progressively worse.
Next, £52 is 18% of the cost of a new part. After reading lots of trails on this I came to the conclusion that there really isn't much else ever happens, so why waste your money on the diagnostic, especially when looking through the forum, lots of people are told, after having this done, "we think it's the cpu". You pay for the cpu to be changed because it sounds cheaper than the whole monty, and the problem still exists. Then you pay for the other part, guess what? No guarantee. When I talked to BBA reman they told me that there is interaction of some sort between the cpu and column, and they are best changed as a pair. Also the BBA guarantee their part for two years. Fart only one.
The changeover is not hard provided you remember not to reconnect the battery until all the work is complete, and keep the ribbon cable that activates the airbag in the same position relative to the wheel.
