Hi thanks for your input. Hate to say it but power steering seems to have temporarily fixed itself! Think this is the beginning of the end but keep my fingers crossed every day that it remains working. I had booked it into Fiat dealer for full diagnostic but as now working seems little point at the moment. There are various comments on this and many people who have paid £££s to have new steering column / rack have been left with same problem. Would you happen to know if it is safe to drive when power steering doesn't work?

If you are built like a Gorrilla you might control the car while manoevering if it cuts out while driving. You're are likely to cause damage somehwere between the power steering and the steering wheel as the loads you are feeding into the assembly are around four times higher. Also as it goes from light to very heavy the change in input required ends to make it difficult to control the car. I have driven one in this state, and I have to say it starts on hard lock, so you are normally going slowly, however, it scared me enough to change it sooner rather than later. Everybodys' seems to display the symptoms you are describing. It will normally reset if you turn the ignition off and on. I would advise change the unit now. If you are reasonably competent diy person it should take you around 4hrs. Apparently the pros do it after a couple of times in half an hour. It's all work inside the car and quite logical. There are a lot of plugs to plug in, but they can only go in one way, so all in all it's tedious having to do it but not rocket science. (How hard can it be to stick a payload on top of a tube full of explosives anyway?)

Hi You seem to know what you are talking about! What needs changing on the car and what costs are we talking about. I estimate my car to be worth no more than £1000 - it's W reg with 55,500 miles on the clock. Having read various people's comments on this it seems the general consensus is that having spent many ££s on steering rack/column this doesn't fix the power steering problem.

Harrison, my Y reg ELX hadn't even done 40K and I only ever use the City button for parking, but my power steering went. I bought a reconditioned power steering pump from BBA Reman which cost me £160 (with a two year warranty) through ebay. My local garage fitted it for £60 (much cheaper than the £600+ Fiat wanted!). My power steering has been fine since. This is what I bought: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Fiat-Punto-Brav......1QQcmdZViewItem

Hi Many thanks for your message Haven't had my car fixed yet. It appears that if I drive it regularly the power steering works. It's only if I don't drive it (it stays on drive all weekend normally) then on Monday power steering won't work. ~for time being will try to drive regularly and hope continues to work. My car is now not worth a great deal - W reg with 55,000 on clock so don't really want to spend money on it. thanks

hii've figured out that it is to do with the actual steering of the car. if you do a lot of full lock steering i.e. parking, the next time you start the engine, even if it is straight after, you will find the power steering has failed i've had the failure a few times now, but not since i realised this. i now drive more carefully making sure i use the city button for Any serious cornering etc and that i never use full lock. seems to be working fine too.

Hi. You should not use the city button as it tends to put a higher load on the system,

Hi. Normally it is easier to replace the complete unit, sometimes it is only the ECU on the column but recon unites are around £200 + vat so it is normally the best route. When you get it replaced DON'T use the city button, it is pointless and is associated with the units packing up.

This has happened to my wifes punto that I have just bought for her. You can just buy the ECU but this will cost you £300.0+, and you have to get the one that matches the column. If you go to Ebay and type in the 'buy' box fiat punto steering column, you wil see a full unit for £165.00 off the web site http://www.bba-remain.com here you get a fully re worked and re condidiotned unit WITH a 2 year warranty. Fiat wanted £900.00+ VAt, plus fitting, BBA-remain direct is £225.00 plus delivery, their site off Ebay id £165.00 - well worth it.. Best bet though, DON'T BUY A FIAT PUNTO - Go for a Ford or Toyota instead (hydraulic powersteering, not electronic)

Hi. Yes, Astra's have electro / hydraulic power steering, another common one to fail. If you look at BBA Website they have a list of common faults, this will give you an indication of which (if any) cars are good.

Fiast are Boll$x if you excuse my badlanguage...i have had nothing but problems since buying my 53 reg second hand in October 2006...the steering is intermitent..one minute it is perfect then all of a sudden it goes....sometimes it doesnt work at all when i start and othe times it cuts out. if i put CITY on and i let go of steering wheel (in controlled environment of course) it veers strongly to the left.....they suck and im in no financial situation to buy a nrew car or get new steering. i got the car as i do alot of miles and needed a trusty car...what an idiot.....

just5 to update the lastthread now i have calmed down after realising Fiat are friggers... my power steering is eefected as follows 1- occassionally cuts out on motorways 2- doesn't work in the mornings 3- battery light is on first thing in morning (on seperate occassion from above). This turns off after about 1 mile or so 4- first thing in morning my temp gauge is COLD and taked a few miles to get to the middle. 5- randomly cuts out on non motorway roads.. 6- on CITY vears to the one side - when wheel turned clockwise does not spring back automatically to the centre. if turned anti clockwise automaticaaly overcorrects andswings further clockwise than straight (does that make sense!) Just to put a few views... This morning my car temp was cold and when i put in on CITY it veered offf to the right. once the temp had got to mid point the steering was much more straight. i turned off CITY when i got to motorway and it went well on my 35 mile journey to work. i have read lots of theories and am trying to give as much info for someone to HELP MY PUNTO!!!
