I am contemplating returning from Australia and buying a preloved really mobile motorhome for ten to fifteen thousand pounds and living in it permanently in England. Is this just a pipedream? Would it be too cold? Too expensive? Just plain daft?

I am contemplating a trip to Australia.
Can you offer any first hand advise on the dos and donts of visas, immigration
authorities etc. Any input appreciated.

As to living in a motorhome in the UK, I would urge you to reconsider, (for
reasons I am not about to discuss in a public forum such as this)

Best regards.

My parents have a permanent home here but prefer to keep on the move. This is often abroad but sometimes in Britain when visiting friends and family or testing a new van. They enjoy camping wild over an organised site but have been moved on more that once in the middle of the night!

It isn't legal to stop anywhere even overnight without the landowners permission - so you would have to choose remote locations or pay for a site (many close in winter). Other than that, the choice of van and its facilities is the main barrier to your plan. Will you be happy 'slopping out' on a regular basis or going in a bush on a cold winter's night?

Thanks for your helpful remarks JB. I'm beginning to think that I would be better off touring round Australia!

At the moment the country is in the grip of a foot and mouth epidemic, which means a lot of sites are currently closed. Other than that, the weather here can be pretty dire (unless you like the sound of raindrops drumming on the roof!), but motorcaravanning can be a good way of seeing the country. If you choose sites over wild camping (which is illegal here - but people still do it!) you will not be able to stay longer than three weeks on one site, I think. It might also be worthwhile fitting an inverter so that you can run mains electric devices from your battery if you want to.

Thanks for your comments. I have decided to definitely buy a motorhome in Australia and follow the sun here.

Can anyone offer advice we are about to set of on an extended trip around Europe in a motorhome, it is a converted bus, 22 yrs old, do you know any company that will cover us for breakdown/recovery. What sites are best for a large vehicle? Where can you fill up water and empty waste? Any other useful advice gratfully received

I mailed your message to my
father - what follows is his reply:

1 R U a member of AA or RAC? If so
check reciprocal arrangements. If
not,
forget insurance and just make
sure you have van in best
condition before
departure plus have stock of
essential spares plus directory of
European
service agents for your vehicle.

2 Sites generally not a problem.
Use Caravan Club "Caravan Europe
2001" to
ID places to stay, and call ahead
if worried about size of vehicle.
Better
still, avoid sites and park where
you can - and use sites as backup
once or
twice a week. Car parks in towns
and villages are much better than
you might
expect - and are usually free. We
park wherever we can. I'm writing
this
from the middle of farmland in the
Po valley South of Turin - and I'm
in a 7 metre van!

3 Water is available from campsite
of course, fuel stations, dedicated
motorcaravan points (eg 'aires de
services' in France and similar in
Italy). Dump sewage at campsites,
dmp's or public loos.

Best advice: just get on with it
and learn as you go.

Thank you for your info, if you think of anything else that might help please send it. RAC etc no good as vehicle too old and big, we have spares sorted and will head out in the first week of may. Scared and excited but positive this will be an adventure of a lifetime.

Adventure of a lifetime? If you're anything like my parents, it'll be the first of many such adventures ... they're driving to China next year!!!

Don't worry too much about breakdowns - some of my most vivid childhood memories are of our expeditions ... watching 'Dynasty' (dubbed) in a garage reception, whilst it chucked it down outside and my parents attempted to explain, using hand gestures, what was wrong with our van ... waking up some poor nightcapped frenchman in the middle of the night to help dig us out of the sandy verge we had become stuck in halfway up a hill ...

Have a great trip!

Another of my father's replies:

Best but very expensive option is to get a gas tank with a set of Euro
connections. This can be filled at very low per-litre cost wherever you are,
but may involve an initial investment of say 400-500.
Next best: use Camping Gaz bottles (expensive for what you get, but
easily exchangeable in
most of Europe). Next best (very fiddley but reasonably cheap): purchase
local gas bottles in whichever country you are in (eg Totalgas in France),
exchange them as necessary when empty, and get 80%-ish of your bottle-purchase money back by trading them in before you leave the country.

Mossy - you sound as though you are complete beginners at this - so are we.... A book which can give you lots of tips and wrinkles though is John Wickersham's Motorcaravan Manual, published by Haynes (who do all the vehicle handbooks you see at Halfords etc). You might not get one from Halfords, but most caravan/motorcaravan accessories shops sell them. We've found it very helpful for the practical things in life!
