when towing my caravan at the weekend going uphill i noticed black smke from the exhaust ive got a 1993 mitsubishi pajero 2.500 cc short wheel base what could be the problem

theres a valve on inlet manifold (recirculater or summit like that its called) faulty or needs cleaning,,,,,,,ive heard u can remove it (two bolts) make a gasket so it blocks it off and apparently this cures the black smoke but never tried it myself ....ive found over the years white smoke = water.....blue smoke=oil......black smoke = overfuelling /mixture .....hope this is of some use to ur prob
