I think pitbulls should not be banned in the uk as its not the dogs fault it is the owners fault for them being vicious does anybody agree ???

No. American Pit Bulls are not "Banned". I have seen and met plenty in this country. If you have one, or a cross breed of one, it is illegal to breed from it, it must be micro-chipped and tattooed by law, it is illegal for it to be in the possesion of anyone under the age of 16 and it must be muzzled in public at all times. Saying that, it would be illegal to import one, or a cross breed, so you pretty much wuldn't be able to get your hands on one, legally.

You, yourself say they are vicious in that statement.... but you still don't see why they should be classed as a dangerous dog? Of course it isn't the dogs "fault".

I personally like Pit Bulls, I have met quite a few as a groomer/canine hydrotherapist and all bar one have been complete softies - with people that is, not other dogs. But, they are banned for a reason...along with the other 3 breeds on the list (Dogo Argentino - my fav, Fila Brazilera and the Japenese Toza) simply because they have been breed to be aggressive dogs, this isn't the owners fault, but the breeders, from years back.

There are aggressive dogs in almost every breed, ie some rotties, *!#%!@, german shepherds, and mainly small dogs such as yorkies, westies, russels etc etc. Unfortunatly, Pit's just have a bad reputation.

Yes i agree with the above they are NOT banned in the UK its just they must be micro-chipped and tattooed by law.
ive seen a few were i live but they do have to wear a mussle when out in the streets,
very nice breed, just misunderstood, and get there bad reputation from bad breeders.

My little yorkshire terrier got attacked by a pit bull 2 months ago while we were on a trip to the seaside. Luckily he is still with us but we nearly lost him. The dog was not muzzled (obviously) and even though it had a lead on the owners were not holding it. We were in a pub garden with small children running around everywhere. I think alot of aggression is to do with the parentage of the animal as well as their upbringing. So im afraid i think they should be banned and if they werent allowed in this country my little one wouldnt have beeen attacked! As the owners of this dog were also foreign they laughed at the fact that their dog had nearly killed mine. But they soon went when they heard the word police mentioned. So noone got prosecuted the dog is still walking around and it could have quite easily been a child!

Sorry to hear about you dog Caz. It could have been any other breed to attach yours though. And if yourkshire terriers were not as small as they are...they could do a lot of damage too. You will find that a pit bull will never turn on a child. They are perfect with people just not other dogs.

I completely agree with you that they should not be banned, I believe if the owner brings the dog up correctly then it will not be vicious as with all other dog breeds, it is not just pitbulls that can be aggressive, it all dependds on how the dog is brought up

Hi, sorry when I replied "I know but I love the staffys" sorry it was ment for something else, I went to get my first staffy today a little boy 8wks he was black with white chest and paws absolutely gorgeous, anyway finally got there after an hour and half train journey(as I dont drive) to be left wandering the streets for an hour whilst they would not answer there phone finally they rang me when I reached their house only to be told they no longer wanted to sell him, I was so disappointed not only for me but for my 4 year old daughter who I had promised a puppy by the time she got home from school, the pup was so lovely and playful he would have fitted in perfectly but now im back to square one finding another one, my dad has a 3 year old white staff who he is planning to breed in November so might just wait to see how they come out,

i have a six stone white pitbull called jacob and its nice to hear ppl praise them for how they are rather than slag them off for what they can do. about three years ago my 2 year old neice was stroking him and decided to try and pull his left cheek off. he let out an all mighty yelp and didnt even look in her direction needless to say i was on top of him before he could do anything anyway. there was no aggresion and his tail never stopped wagging. as friendley as he is i would never leave him alone with a child i have a 7 year old daughter he adores but would never dream of leaving her alone with him and think the same goes for any other dog owner whatever type of dog they have. pit bulls are very misunderstood if youve never had anything to do with them. i had a staffy before him called spyke and he was the same bar he was as soft as muck with other dogs as well as ppl. my grandma bought him for me for my 14th birthday. these are the only 2 dogs i would ever consider owning as i would never trust any other breed around children. some ppl may think thats crazy but spend half an hour with jacob and i guarantee you will change your minds. a lot of ppl get pitbulls mixed up with english bull terriers wich are a lot less fiendley towards ppl in my opinion as 2 have gone for me when going to stroke them. never had this happen with a pb. that is jacob with my girlfriend in the picture. she gets worried incase some one breakes in when were at work because she thinks they will take him and leave every thing else as he would be pleased to see them. she had never owned a dog before him and went crazy when i got him as she didnt like animals. that lasted about ten minutes. now the dog sleeps between us as she thinks its cuel for him to sleep on the floor. regards. ian

i know exactly what you mean and sorry you took my post the wrong way. i didnt mean to make out they were nasty dogs, i said less frindley. i should have added that i've known a lot more than the 2 english bull terriers i spoke of above and most of them have been just as friendley as staffies and pits. would you agree that english bullterriers are much more highley bred for shows etc. my mate used to breed englishes and he owned the ones that went for me and about a dozen that were soft as muck but very flighty and hard to control, had trouble with them chewing, would not come back if you let them of lead etc. his dogs were very highley bred show dogs tho and this might explain why.
there is no way i would pass judgement on any breed of dog i was not familiar with. as you said owning a pit means i know how it feels. please dont think i dislike englishes. agree that bullteriers are the best breed of dog and that includes englishes but after staffies and pb's.
