NISSAN X-TRAIL HEATER FAN CUTS OUT

Can anyone give me some advice? I have a Nissan X-Trail and the heater fan cuts out intermittently. It goes for weeks without working, then cuts in for either a whole day or, as yesterday, 5 mins. There are no unusual noices, it's either working perfectly or it is totally dead. Air con fine, but not much good without the fan. Has anyone any suggestions, is this something I can get my husband to fix?
