was about to buy a 2001 freelander 1.8 3 door converted to lpg, i am informed at the dealer that this car has just had its head gasket re done, and its valves hardened for the gas i think, but god the amount of bad press this type of car has is realy putting me off, is it all correct that land rover have used faulty engines were the heads go all the time, even after they have been replaced its just a question of not if but when, plase advise

Ste.

I have never liked this combination of lpg in a k series , i personally dont like lpg , we constantly have problems with lpg . we dont fit the systems just work around them and in my experience are very problematic.
We have one Freelander which comes in every 6 months for a new inlet manifold , where the lpg has blown the manifold in half , theyre only made of plastic by the way .

My advise is to give it a very wide bearth

thanks for your responce, yes true the single point lpg systems are a real pain and i would not go near them, how ever the multi poit direct injection systems can never blow back resulting in the blowing to bits of the air filter housing and as you say cars with plastic manifolds, being detroyed too by the backfire, however a car fitted by a lpga company who give a cert good enough to alow the dvla to amend a v5 registration to show petrol/lpg are systems fitted that i have had no problems with for over 4 years, my current car a nissan has covered 90.000 miles all on lpg, now thats some saving on both derv or petrol my car returns about 25 mile to the gallon meaning its petrol eq is about 55 miles a gallon no problems, so as somone who knows a little on lpg but nothing on landrover, i would love to know about its so called dire k type 1.8 engine, powerfull it may not be but head gaskets blowing all the time is a concern putting me of getting this car, its engine was one that suffered the problem and was repaired, but it looks like its a problem that will happen again and one i cant aford to get repaired, so can you tell me if the head has already gone and been repared or replaced is more likly to go again more so than other cars.

so apart from the above about the lpg should i think about getting one a 2001 3 door 1.8 with the k type engine, full service history and engine rebuild due to head blowing with 99.000 miles on clock, is it worth a try, as there are so many bad storys about this engine, but was thinking if its been rebuilt due to faulty head gasket, would this mean the end of the problems landrovers with this engine have being fixed, or are they likly to go again.

The multi point lpg was fitted to this Freelander that blew the manifold apart - it had emulators on all injectors .

The hg issue is a very big problem with the Freelander , althought the hg has been repaired on your vehicle it has the potential to fail again . Over the last 8 months there has been a modified hg and engine components which have been very successful with the problem , as yet we have had no comebacks where the mod hg has been used , you would need to find out if the vehicle has had these fitted , if so then i woulld be more happier to purchase the vehicle . Apart from that i have always liked the K series and have found it quite responsive ....... just a pity about the hg !

Please take my advise regarding lpg and these vehicles , my own experience tells me that its not a marriage made in heaven , i feel you may regret it , that said its your money so good luck with whatever decision you make .

Seriously consider Dudkats advice here about LPG as I too have had real problems with the reliability of LPG systems once it ages a bit, problems from poor wiring connections to gummed up injectors due to lack of use and I would imagine this would become more of an issue on a direct injection engine and airflow meters to melted airfilter boxes and so on & on.
In my opinion (of course an arguable case)LPG is one of these prodults thats fine for the first couple of years then is a pile of dogs dingys after that and in something thats better left for bigger engines like v6's and v8's, of course some people will argue the toss here but when having to actually work on these cars and decide whether it's the gas or the fuel system at fault adds Labour time to a bill.
Just to add I always thought the 1.8 k series was actually quite a perky engine considering a freelander must be nearly 4000lbs in weight roundabouts it pulls it along pretty damn well.
