Just a quick question to the re-surfacers watching this forum..
I am currently using a "portable" extraction fan which, with its hose attachment weighs a ton. I was wondering what you use and if you could point me in the direction of any info.
Obviously the unit needs to extract fumes and dust from overspray along with on the odd occasion the dust from having to strip sand a previously resurfaced bath. I am also looking for a hvlp spray gun where the pot is remote for those not so easy to get to locations. Your help gentlemen would be much appreciated.
Gary.

Thanks again supersurfacer.

I have decided to use Thermoglaze (which incidentally is not a franchise) so I will let you know how it works out. They are a bit more expensive but give a 5 or 7 year guarantee depending on whether you choose to have an extra layer or not.

I may yet call on you for my son's flat in Edinburgh!

Sounds good RGP.

Jackson - In answer to your question about globe taps - new one's are available as well as a mixer. They aren't cheap but are good quality.

Or you may be able to find some old ones in a reclamation yard.

thermoman,
at no point have I said I know you - though I think we may have spoken on the phone.
I apologise for saying you were a franchise - I believe you're an offshoot of an australian company.
I've seen the results of your process though...and was impressed.

Hi Gary,
I believe Dingbro (in Dundee) are agents for the Accuspray range of sprayguns, and I'm pretty sure they do a remote canister variation.
BTW I've used both accuspray and apollo and I've come to the conclusion that accuspray is overpriced and over-rated - comments please from fellow resurfacers - 100 words on 'which gun and turbine is best and why?' - mars bar in the post for christmas to be best contribution:-)

Re extractors, have you looked at Clarke extractor units?
Failing that, why not make your own up - used 'concertina-able 6 inch hose + something like a 300W fan.

Oh and that reminds me - any of you guys used self contained battery powered full face respirators - and what kind do you like best?

What can I say but I am now highly amused but also totally confused - having read every single message on the subject of re-enamelling a cast iron bath. I had hoped, when diving into this forum, to find a nice easy answer which would tell me how to get rid of the stains on my white, but looking as if it's not been cleaned for a while, bath.
What I have found in the multiple messages is that I can try having it re-enamelled or resurfaced or something similar just as long as i can find a reliable professional to do the job for me and can afford the cost. And then I just have to hope I chose my professional wisely and that my bath is restored to a thing of beauty which will last at least a short lifetime.
Alternatively I can buy a Tubby kit or similar and try doing it myself but that might or might not work too well - especially if its already been resurfaced and I don't know that as just moved to this house.
Or option number 3 - as i have a lovely big bathroom in which much of the space is underutilised - I could just rip out the stained enamel bath and put in a big modern corner bath with a bubble machine.
Now off to sample said stained bath for the first time to see how the surface feels to my naked skin. This could well prejudice any future decision.

Hello Mirriam

I also live in Dorset and have a bath to renovate, did you follow through with 'Andy' and did it work / cost very much?

Best regards
Rod

Thanks Gazz and Supersurfacer. Never thought of a home made extractor.
Looking at getting a Graco spraygun from the states. These can be remoted so that the pot is over your shoulder. The remote pot setups I have seen over here cost around £800 which is way more than I want to spend at the mo.
If I dont talk to you all before Christmas have a great time and a Very Merry Christmas from Surface Doctor... (Thought I would get a little plug in before the New Year :-D )

Many thanks for the good advice.

Scott from Thermoglaze in Milton Keynes (01908 235485) came up to Sheffield to resurface my roll top bath yesterday. The results far exceed my most optimistic expectations. The bath is now smooth, bright white and shiny. In fact it looks new and makes the relatively new white porcelain hand basin, which he didn't do, look greyish!

He used a spray on the bath which he had previously heated up to quite a high temperature with infra red heaters, after much stripping, rubbing down and hydrofluoric acid etching. He then baked the spray on before rubbing down again and then reprayed and baked it again. Quite a long series of processes but the results clearly justify the means.

He is a very nice guy and was here from 10.00 am until 17.30. The products used do smell a bit "solventy" made worse by the fact that we couldn't open the bathroom window for ventilation as it had been sealed by the previous owners! However the smell has already cleared!

He made no mess whatsoever, which, considering that the walls are wallpapered with dark blue paper, it has a wood floor and the curtains remained in place, was remarkable. He masked off all the walls etc. with plastic sheeting.

It may have been a bit more expensive than a simple paint job but he gave a 7 year Thermoglaze guarantee so we will have to see how well it lasts, but it is certainly looking fantastic at present.

I would have no hesitation in recommending him unreservedly from what I have seen so far.

Hi GRP,
Thought you might be happy:-).

And Gazz- thanks for info on 3M.
And to all fellow surfacers who are also fume sufferers - if you dont wanna make your own extractor then you can buy a Sealey portable unit for about 200 quid. See http://www.johndavies.co.uk for example.
Weighs about the same as your portable turbine I think.

Hi

i have a cast iron bath which has been stained by an unknown cleaning agent. I have only had it for a few months although the bath itself is very old. the stains are orange/rust coloured and quite extensive. I would welcome any advice on how to remove these stains. I am not looking to do it myself and don't mind spending a bit of money. I am in Bristol.

Re-surfacer. Could you please contact me (01864 505 268) to discuss cost of "re-enamalling" the roll top bath. Thankyou
PS
If unable to do so, could you please let me know who can do so.

The bath is plumbed in but the inside has usual scratches, blemishes etc. however it also has som rust damage (about 50mm) though only superficial. Thanks
