Hello Brodski,
It is going to be potluck. You may find no vitreous enamel on the surface at all, just raw cast iron. This will mean some additional pre-preparation of cleaning, rust neutralising and plenty of filling. Only then can you consider applying a new surface. Any Professional service must also carry out this work so don't accept any short cuts. It is a lovely bath and well worth doing. Especially with the teak surround. As you say, it feels like being in the captains cabin.
Cheers

Hi Mazza,
your local yellow pages..but make sure:

- they offer a minimum of 3 year guarantee
-they have been trading for more than a year- the longer the better
-ask them for at least three references that you can phone or check out.

I recently had a cast iron bath resurfaced using Bath Enamelling Service in Aberdeen. My experience was bad - enamel put on too thick and had run, plus a very rough finish. I suspect its always best to clean off the dust first! I'd do it myself next time

This forum seems to be turning in to an advertising board for T-Glaze...

Hilarious . I particularly like the way he says Tglaze are "THE " leading company , not "a" leading company.
I think he missed out ....fantastic deals ...call now for no obligation estimate ...offer ends soon ...if lines are busy call back later , but do call .
Come on chap ! you forgot your telephone number and web address /fax details etc .
Think of all the potential customers you are not getting to.

Has anyone used acrylic bath 'liners' as an alternative to resurfacing?

From what i know of them they were popular in the states , almost as popular as refinishing , but i heard that a great number
of people had problems with them and now hardly anyone is doing it. I think there were always eventually problems with sealing the waste against the original ,and distortion in this area.
But dont quote me on that .

Have read up on it over the years - seems generally a good idea, but I can see how the waste issue could cause difficulties. On another note, anyone know of a 'safe' etch or an alternative & effective way of grinding an enamel surface prior to undercoat / top coat applications?

Hi all,

Can anyone recommend where I can get training to resurface & repair chips in/on baths. The only place I have found is in the USA.

I dont want to buy a franchise and I cant find a course doing this anywhere. My business would be basedin Hastings so if any of you professionals would consider training me ( I will of course pay you) then please let me know.

Kind regards
Darren

Hi Darren,
I think you'll find that there will be plenty of people willing to train you without a franchise - but you'll might just be tied in to buying a minimum quantity of some very overpriced materials.....bit like swings and roundabouts really!!

GO TO THE USA - I went to the states - no tie in and second to non 'one on one' training. They will even let you tag along when they do real paying jobs.
There are plenty of suppliers in the states who will happily sell you products cheaper than you can buy here - just do your maths first - import duty and 'handling' fees can almost double the cost.
I went to train with 'Integrity Coatings' in Dallas (http://www.integritycoatings.com) and often buy materials from Hawk labs (http://www.hawklabs.com) Hawk also offer training but are quite pricy - but very good. NON require you to use their materials. You pay for training and thatÂ’s that. My turbine & spray gear is supplied by C.J. Spray (http://www.cjspray.com) - again all in the states. 3 years ago I flew over, got accommodation, did the training and purchased my spray equipment for around £1000. If you want the easier 'no ties' supplier try a guy called Simon Baily at The Lab in London [Log in to view email] Bit pricy but all above board and plenty of advice - or go through http://www.diversifiedcoatings.biz to contact him as I think they supply him with his resurfacing materials.
My turbine & gun is still going strong after 2+ years - but the gun does need new seals etc.
The current $ / £ exchange rate means most UK suppliers of training and equipment can't touch the Yanks' prices - and you get a bit of a holiday thrown in. Don't forget that you can also offset much of it on your tax return - you might even get a training allowance via a local authority training scheme!
If you want any more advice mail me at [Log in to view email]
Good luck
