Thanks. Do I need to use any `special` paint on the outside, or a normal tin of emulsion I can pick up anywhere?

Hi, we restore about 300 baths a year, the best paint to use on the outside of a cast iron bath is DUlux Satinwood or Farrow & Ball Oil Eggshell. It gives a really nice finish and is easy to apply.

Hi Andy,

Would you consider travelling to Oxford to re-surface a cast iron bath?

dont forget to sand the outside of the bath before painting, the more time spent on preparation the better the finish.

I have a cast iron bath which has been enamelled about eight years ago.
It has started to develop a pinkish colour and begun chipping down to the original white base. Can this be restored as I cannot afford a new bathroom at present?. Is it easy to use a kit as mentioned?

the kits are available for approx £40. if you can live with the rubbish finish and it peeling off in a couple of months then give it a try.
i have been called to rectify these kit problems half a dozen times.
beauty is in the eye of the beholder as they say.

my best advice would be to strip it and have it re coated.

the reason for the deterioration may due to poor methods in the first place.

you pay for what you get, re enamelling will mean removal of your bath and sending to a re enameller cost 500 - 1000

or using best practices and best materials your bath can be re coated in situ cost 250 - 350 and you will not have to remove your bath.

or do it yourself with a kit cost 40 but the finish is usually sub standard and is a real head ache for the DIYer.

Thanks Chris,
You have put me off a DIY job so thank you for that.
I think that I will just replace the Bath eventually. But if I change my mind I shall contact you.

Regards,
Lesley

my cast iron bath needs to be resurfaced. I have contacted Tubby Uk but they do not cover West yorkshire.
Renubath offer a three tier service, but with only a 1 or two year gurantee.
I have only managed to find one local company who offer a 5yr guarantee, but they have only been in business for less than one year, does not inspire confidence. No one seems to have a show room to show their work and the prices range from £110 to renubath top price of £295can anyone please advise

dont go for the 110 this is far too cheap for a good job, the more expensive one fits the right price if using correct proceedures, for more info call me 07813 007708

well said andy, we must have a chat some time.

as always people are looking for the cheepest options, but cheep is usually poor quality.

listen to andy as he knows what he is talking about. i have read many of his comments and in the main totally agree with him.

those of you who wish to do the job yourself with a quick fix kit are foolish and in my opinion wasting your money if you are looking for a quality durable job.

i have been in the finishing trade for 29 years i am time served and city and guilds qualifiyed and to refinish a bath to a high standard using some of the best equipment avalible still requirers considerable concentration and skill on my part, so as you can understand i cringe when i hear that an inexperienced DIY'er is attempting to refinish their bath and also when i hear that someone is doing a quality job for less than £250, get real and call in the guys who can provide a quality job using best practice best materials best preporation and highest level of workmanship. give me a call if you require more info Chris 07813 007708

I have a short note above my message box, stressing that the Forum should not be used to post adverts. I seem to recall that one of the last messages posted by Andy was also to this effect.
DIY'ers may be foolish in your eyes, but many do not have the finance to employ your clearly, incomparable skills.

I live in central London (near Baker Street). I need to get my cast iron bath resurfaced but want a 5 year guarantee. Only one I can see that offers this is Thermoglaze. Any other suggestions/recommendations?

great good to have a direct reply from you at last.

There is nothing wrong with the tubby kit if all you want is a quick fix and reduced price, perhaps just like a person who pops into a local DIY store and buys a paint and grain kit to tart up their kitchen, however if i am asked for advice on how to perform a high quality and durable long lasting guarenteed service i can only suggest that the customer whether a potential one of mine or not should go and get a professional to carry out the work, admitadly there are some who complete excellent DIY projects, however to achive a really high quality job it is not just the opperator but also the product and of course the equipment, most DIY'ers will not purchase the nessassary equipment which enables the high quality which in my experience is normally expected.

the last enty to this forum simply suggested that the person in question should contact me for more advice if they whished, this person did contact me today and i was able to provide indepth info on the subject, this person was specifically looking for a top quallity job with a guarentee, incidentally this person does not reside in my catchment area and because of this i will be unable to service him but none the less i gave up valuable time to try and help guide him to getting the results he is looking for, No Profit To Me.

great to discuss this issue tho. Chris

I have to agree with Chris. I had someone approach me for training last year. He had existing cleaning contract with his local council, and wanted to provide bath resurfacing as an extra string to his bow. He had already therefore tried out a very commonly available diy kit (whose name I wont mentioned here unless pushed;-) ) and the results were dire to say the least...and this guy has turned out to be a dab hand at resurfacing using professional tools. My advice to any would be diy'ers - 'go in with your eyes open...' To be fair, I suspect that the kit would do the job OK if the surface has first been acid etched, and if proper HVLP equipment is used...but how many diy'ers have teh necessary equipment to do this?
Something else I don't understand is how the hell these kit suppliers manage to get a courier to agree to carry solvented materials ..I know of no courier who will touch the stuff due to coshh regulations.
