There have been a few 2ltr diesels that have had porous heads, but I think there has been no more than 3 in the whole of the Freelander Club that have had this problem.
Mines got this engine and I along with several in the Club actually think it is better than the TD4 that was introduced in 2000/2001. Not as powerful but has got better torque for off road use.

Have a look at

Scarlet
Check for off road damage underneath, as some people really do use them as a 4x4.
If pre 2000 yr diesel, check cambelt was replaced at 60k.
Check all the electric windows go up and down, including the rear door, as cables are expensive to replace.
Check rear tyre wear; are they smoothish when you run your hand over them or do they feel like they have got little castles every couple of "lumps"? Especially if Goodyears.
Difficult to do properly, but check that the VCU isn't seized. If you can, lift one rear wheel, and with car in 1st with handbrake off, put a socket and 18" bar on the big nut in the middle of the raised wheel. Stand on the bar. If it moves fairly easily, you should be OK. If you cannot move it, WALK AWAY.
When you drive it check there are no loud thumps from the rear. If there are it probably means the rear diff mountings are shot. Not difficult to repair.
Driving at full lock at low revs can result in stalling, especially in reverse, but this is a characturistic of the transmission.
Join the Freelander Owners Club, as loads of friendly people there who are always willing to give advice and a good social scene.
Any thing else, send me a PM.

There are some good notes about Freelanders in the relevant section of the LRUK Forum, (http://www.landrovernet.com/forum/index.php)
and not such biased opinions as here.
Most "knockers" haven't actually driven one!!

hi scarlet
rodders here,
i agree with the previous post.
i bought one last year and i think the engine is better than the td4.
i spoken to a few top class mechanics and they tell me the bm engine is hard to work on and has faults.
the 2.0td rover engine is dead simple and no complicated electronics.only the cpu box, and there are plenty of those about.
i had a problem with a deep whining sound when running, it was the prop bearings.
simple to replace and less than £50.00.to buy.
get a haynes manual. (no 3929)
i put on a tuning box from roverron, and the power increase is great, better towing torque and economy, (29/31 towing and 42.5 solo, touring) and no black smoke. )price when bought last year, £59.00 +p/p)
i would suggest you get the estate, unless you want open air driving.
just a tip, i change oil and filter every 4.500mls instead of 9,000, it just cleans out the engine and keeps it running smooth
hope this helps.
