Hi, i have recently bought my first caravan - a Swift Challenger 440/4 S but can't find a chassis number anywhere. I was told it was a 1990 year. can anyone help where to find the chassis number please.

Hi hnh. If your Challenger is an "S" model then it wont be a 1990 model. The 440/4 S will be either 1988 or 1989 as in 1990 the option pack was called "SE" . Also in 1990 a cassette toilet was fitted as standard whereas it was an option in 88 and 89. You should find the serial number stamped into the top of the Aframe - you will probably have to remove the plastic fairing cover to locate the numbers. Regards, mark

Hi Mark
I put out a message(10.42am, 21 April) which seems to be lacking in detail now I have seen the sheer range and detail of your knowlege. To identify exactly which handbook I am looking for I think I need more age guidance than I gave originally. Can you help pse with age and the other info. It has 3 windows at the front, a 3 hob cooker with grill and an oven. I need to overhaul whole braking system but am hoping for a bit of guidance (even if only a picture) before I get to grips with it. I will then need to know where to go for any replacement parts needed.

I have a Swift Corniche 12/2 with small silvery plate on chassis showing 1986 but nothing else legible and notes next to fuse box suggests first sold in Jan 1987.
I would like to buy or borrow or pay for a copy of the handbook/manual for this model and some guidance on where to buy brake spares.

seemed to answer its own question (ie its a 1986) and as this is a "How old" thread i didnt pursue it any further. Sorry but i havnt time to do handbooks, manuals brakes etc etc on line as i am busy selling caravans and looking after MY customers! ....Rant over...... LOL - As a 1986 it should have a full width gas bottle locker as the previous years had a seperate box. An 86 will have had a "Zig" battery charger and green curtains whilst the 87 had a "Symphony" battery charger and peach brown curtains. From experience "customers" overhauling brakes, water systems and electrics just end up in a D.I.Y. nightmare so if you dont know what you are doing i wouldnt start in the first place - other than adjustment a caravan handbook will certainly not give you such information. Mark, it turns out to be a 1988 after all that as it has the 4 burner hob and no cassette toilet, thanks once again for all your help

im lookimg to get hold of owners hand book or any booklet for my [ elddis aliye ] think its gtx was told that its 1995 but not sure will atach photo hope you can help thanks . this is best photo but can take more from any angle you like

Yeah sorry about that Mark, what a plonker eh !!.
Cheque sent Monday Mark so hoepfully you've got it now.
Been doing some more examinations and found "The Plate" under one of the beds !!, must have dropped off and not replaced.
Anyway Mark the number on it (which i presume is the chassis number is:-
321351A, is this any good for finding age of van please ??
And i presume the others would be (as in your first message) :-
876 Max gross weight
730 Unladen weight
And could the 75 be Noseweight Mark ??
Plate is very corroded and no writing just the stamped in numbers.

Hi Ron&Jen the Elddis must be quite a bit different from your Abbey GT - it should have actually come with a handbook and registration document telling you the year? Cant just tell from those pics but simple way is to take the 17 digit VIN number off the windows. Cheers, Mark

Yep got it thanx, Terry. By the way the serial number you give is for a 1977 model Ambassador which will have glass windows rather than plastic?

thanks mark for reply .the no is SGE520TELN2200034 i only got a recept .books were lost .it was goverment auction.have traced onwership to check it was ok before biding .through local dealers badge on van great price lol. ill send you privite mail if your intrested . plate at bottom rail only has make dealers name and M G W 1150 KILOS .but would realy like to get hand book or copy if you can help cost no prob .and yes what a defrence its a great tow and very clean inside .but the abby still in family son and family touring antrim coast this week there loving it big change from tent lol .and thamks again ron & jen

Hi "Guru" !, Nope it defo has Plastic windows Mark, the previous owner replaced one of them because of breakage.
Maybe my van is a XL model or summat, or i found the wrong plate.
The mystery continues, have attched pic for clarification !.
ha ha.

Well Terry you are on the next generation of numbers there! Yours is a later model of the pic i posted and is actually 1985 or 1986. I shall update the leaflets for you! Cheers, Mark
