sorry to hijack this thread but really need your help, leaving on first caravanning holiday on saturday, van all done up and all is good, good, nearly good.
1980-81 abi monza. the problem is i dont know how to reverse without the brakes comming on and its burning a hold in my clutch getting it into drive. there is no visible bar to clip over the hitch to lock it into place. ive heard that it might be possible to put on hand brake, drive forward and the tow hitch will lock and thefore allowing me to freely reverse, dont want to try this though as i dont know how to unlock it again..
please help me out, getting desperate

does anyone know what the legal requirements are for towing a caravan, in respect of insurance. I obviously wouldn't drive my car with no insurance in case i caused an accident. but when i try to buy caravan insurance, the public liability part doesn't cover it when it is being towed. what happens if your caravan rights off another vehicle? or worse. Or can someone claim on your car insurance? I would really appreciate any help because i haven't a clue. many thanks nicola

Hi Nicola I just got your email. Even without a serial number this is an easy one as the Lynton Laser 142 V.I.P. model was only made for the 1986 season. Previously it was the GXL. Strangely enough yours will be one of the last ones Lynton ever made because they ceased production in December 1985. Cheers, Mark

Shaun, thanx for your email. The abbreviated number you give me indicates your Abbey spectrum 520 is a 1992 model. Mark

Fyneart your Monza should have an automatic reversing system i.e. you wont have a clip or a spring to hook over. If it wont reverse then either the hitch damper is u.s. or the brakes simply need adjusting.. pushing it by hand could be your only alternative?

Hi Mark, Hoping you can give me some information or even pictures about the piper 1400. I have been given one of these and have never done any caravaning before. My wife has seen the van but can't remember much about it other than the name (printed on the van in large letters by all account) and that the door is behind the axle. I know its not much to go on. I haven't seen it yet but am due to collect in a few days, what should i be looking out for as i have to bring it 300odd miles to get it home(don't want to tow a dodgey van).
Hope you can help
Steve

Ooo crikey Steve you must me a brave man! LOL.... The last Piper 1400 came out of the factory in 1983 so it will be at least 25 years old... has it got plastic or glass windows? Certainly check that the tyres are not toooo old! Good luck, Mark ps the van will be a longer version of this:

hi mark, thanks for quick reply, i cant see any sticker where you said but there is one Aframe but its faded beyond regognition, i cant get to the van till w/end to check the stripe colour but i think its a faint orange and a light bluey colour but i am not 100% sure. the upholstery is a golden colour. i have these two pictures to hand if they are any good for the moment. once again thanks for all your effort and help. jones.

Hi Mark, thanks for the info, i am now a little worried. My wife is pretty certain that it has glass windows (would this be a good or bad thing?) other than the tyres is there any part which rots worse than others that i should pay close attention to?

ns, I can understand Mark in his position but I'm not tied by the same rules.
First courtesy says if you intend to use it you should inform your insurance company that you have a towbar fitted to your car, a towbar though could be argued to be a 'modification' and therefore you MUST inform your insurance. It's highly unlikely they'll say any more than thank you carry on! but once they know then you know your covered.
Cover should mean as you think that while attached to the car and ONLY while attached, you are covered for third party risk although by no means certain, it could be 'road traffic act only' which is far less cover.
To be fully safe I'd get the van at least some basic insurance, I'm with 'Caravan Guard' and although cheap enough, what impressed me was the simple quick way they dealt over the phone with my cover.

Hello, Can anyone please help. I have a Swift Pirouette caravan, it's 15ft Long not including the towing area, I cannot find a VIN number/chassis plate or anything! I would really like to know the weight of the van because we're upgrading the car. Also any other info would be great!

Hi Steve.... yeah glass windows would be bad news in that it would make it a 70's model rather than 80's. It first appeared in 1974. Cheers, Mark

Hi Darren Swift Pirouette started in 1974 through to 1989 but they had a 13' ish internal body length? However for one year in 1993 they changed the layout to an end bathroom which was around 15' although this had a fitted cassette toilet and would have had CRIS VIN numbers on the windows. I need a bit more info to narrow it down i.e. glass or plastic windows, seperate or integrated gas locker, internal/external pump, hot water system/shower? They all pretty much had a green stripe so that wont help! Send me a pic or 2 if pos.? regards, Mark
