Hi Stan, the serial numbers of older caravans OFTEN started with the model year eg SW89, 86AB, 87AV. However do not use this theory constantly or you will get caught out! Many chassis numbers happen to start or end with 2 digits that have been sold on as a caravan many years wrong! This also applies to CRIS numbers with digits that just happen to be "newer" or even older! than the caravan actually is. Cheers, Mark

Can you help to date an ABI Sprinter 350/2 serial SG (first 2 letters are faded and may be CC) 75M0NABT0415513. It is being sold as a 1998 model (there is a CRIS certificate showing First Registered with CHRIS as 1998 but the van looks older than that).
No CCC certificate present.
The chassis looks like an ALKO. The cassette toilet turned out to be a bog-standard porta potti.
Thanks for your help
Jim

Hi Jim you are correct to be suspicious with the Sprinter. The van, although registered in 98, is actually a 1996 model. Sprinters were very basic hence the "porta potti" and vans of this ilk were slow to sell at that time due to the lack of specification. The 350/2 was only made from 94-97 in any case and was replaced by the 390/2 GT in 1998 which DID have a cassette toilet fitted but cost an extra £1800! Regards, Mark

hello,we have had our caravan for 10 years now.love it to bits , but would like to know more about it.
the plate by the door says it was made by cosalt caravans ltd,grimsby-1978,serial number 11311.,max gross weight,735kg,10 feet long.
as you open the door there is a toilet compartment to the right. next to this ,the back of the van, is a seat which when folded down with the table makes a double bed.going towards the front of the van at the end of the bed is a wardrobe.coming across the front of the van is two single seats with a table which convert into a bottom bunkbed.the top bunk is stored on a small shelf and unfolds.
coming back towards the door, from the bunks is a fridge, with a sink on top,and a cooker and grill nearest to the door ,with a cupboard underneath.the water supply is by footpump.there is a single gas light above the table/double bed.if anyone has any info we would love to hear it thanks.

Hi Stew i thought you might know which model your Cosalt van is after 10 years of ownership? However it sounds like you have a 1978 Piper 1000T. Body length was 10' overall was 13'7", unladen weight was a meagre 520kg so really there is nothing much lighter than that! As you say the van had a gas light and a foot pump and apart from the 2 burners and grill that was pretty much its standard spec. Piper was part of the Cosalt Group, who became the Abbey Group who are now the Swift Group. Cheers, Mark

thanks Mark.
although we have had our van for a while, we never really tried to find out anything about it, we just used it.recently we joined a classic caravan group and they all know everything about old caravans, but had never seen one like ours.
someone suggested this site to us as they were sure someone would know something.
i don't suppose you know where we can get a no.1 mantle for the gas lamp?
thanks again,Stew

Well that statement really takes the biscuit! HaHaHa The Piper (maybe bar Sprite) was probably the most popular caravan at the time!

Are you sure it is a No.1 gas mantle? From memory everything had a No.2 mantle from 1976ish onwards? We sold our last No.1 mantle in about 1982 i think........ I would suggest using a 12v striplight or if you really like gas use a Tilley or Gaz lantern. Cheers, Mark

Mark- I have a CRIS registration, looks like ca log book. I was given it when I got the van 3 years ago. No VIN on windows & nothing on A frame either. Is here anywhere else the VIN to match the CRIS reg form will be shown??Assume I cant really sell it without knowing the log book ties to the van?

Mark,
Do you know if Bailey Auvergne 1993 model came in 5 birth, double each end & dor to shut off down back end.Oven, grill & hob. Fly screens but not to front windows only sides..Wondering if the stickers have been put on by some one now & the VIN doesnt belong to this van at all- how likely is that??

Hi aine your Ace Ambassador will be a 1986 model with a bow fronted window and a brown stripe around it. Not all insurance companies will quote on a van this age. Regards, Mark

Hi Eldrew. If there are no signs whatsoever of VIN numbers on the windows or the chassis then I think you may well have a CRIS Document for "another" caravan unless somebody has done a clean up job on it? The Auvergne was introduced in 1991 as part of the Scorpio range and as you say had a sliding door to shut off the rear end. Front window flyscreens in these models were extra at the time. In 1994 the Auvergne was introduced as part of the Pageant and Discovery ranges. As the models did not change an awful lot from year to year a pic. or 3 showing upholstery/fridge/heater/battery box and outside coulouring would help. Cheers, Mark

Hi Alunh. Your Perle question is very interesting as in theory it should be a 1980 model but the "1" in front indicates it was probably a prototype made in July 1979. The reason I say this is twofold. a) the 79 model range had glass windows with a dark brown lower panel and gas locker box. b) the 1980 model range had the plastic windows with a colour scheme exactly like yours but your pic indicates you have glass windows?
Judging from where the door is you have the Argos model which was 12' 11" as opposed to the smaller 11'4" Adonis. The Argos weighed just 600kg with a maximum of 795kg. Regards, Mark
