Hi I was just wondering what people are towing there Hobby's with either Legally or Illegally. Please reply to this as i am really interested as i have spoken to a lot of people who are towing both legally and illegally some of them who knew and some of them who didnt (but now do).

I will start off. I have just bought a brand new 650 kfu. We at present have a Landrover Freelander. It is within its towing weight but obviously illegal.

I am able to get insurance for this via CIS insurance company for around £350. My husband is a HGV driver and at the end of the day i realise its a risk but having spoke to so many people including the chief of traffic police, dvla and vosa. I am sure we will be OK. We have had a 3 caravans now and not had any problems with either one of them. Thankgod and they are the same length and weight as the hobby. The only difference is that its a little wider. I have to say though we do use both extended mirrors and my husband is a very experienced HGV driver of around 15 years.

Well mainly my point is, drink driving is illegal, so dont do it.
Using a handheld phone whilst driving is illegal, so dont do it.
Pulling a 2.5 meter wide caravan is illegal, so :-- get my drift.
CIS may have taken your £350, cos its fine to pull it with a goods vehicle over 3.5 tons, its fine to have it sited on a park, but i assure you, if anything happens on the road which results in a claim, they will revoke the insurance contract.
Like i said i'd have bought a Bailey senator, no german van comes close in my eyes & the bonus is of course you wont get done for using it on the road.

Hi there kaiko. I have a Freelander 2litre diesel and we want to buy a Hobby. how do yu find the freelander tows the van? We were not going to buy any of big ones but maybe a 540 (shouldnt be a problem ) or a 560. I am concerned about if the freelander is good enough to tow any of the bigger ones. Your experience of towing the van with your car would be appreciated.

Kerry

Hi Kerry, the freelander tows it fine, but my husband is an hgv driver so finds it easy. We only go a max of 50 mph for safety anyhow. Ours is well within the towing capacity of the freelander. It is actually shorter and lighter than our previous british van just a little wider. So this law of towing is so stupid. I have spoken to VOSA, Tayside Police etc and each one of them said at first that it was legal - not knowing for a fact, then after i asked for conformation in writting was told it was illegal and they themselves were so surprised. Off the record - the policeman and VOSA said it would only ever be a problem if there was a major RTA involving a bad injury or death. (god forbid) That is when they would measure the van etc and go more indepth into the sizes etc. They were both more concerned on the towing weight and the length of the van. They also said 99% of police including traffic cops would be unaware of the law concerning towing. Only the very obvious infractions would draw the attention of a passing policeman. I will have to just take the risk and see what happens. If I do get caught then i can bet you will hear about it as i will be the test case for taking it to the Europian Court. I will not let it drop at just getting the fine. I may not get away with it i suspect but at least it will bring the problem to light and i hope that i will have a lot of support on board from everyone agreeing with me on this one- so watch this space.

Kakio. I would not have bought a british van but would have opted for the Hobby. I am new to caravanning and cannot understand what the aversion to the Hobby. It surely cannot only be because it comes from Germany!! Surely not!! In this day and age!! Its quality is unequaled, the thought put into its making is never rivalled by any Brittish van I have seen!! What is the problem, Kaiko? Can you beleive such predudice exsists today?

I was going to insure my Hobby with Lister Patrick ( via Adrian Flux Insurance brokers ) until I got the paper work telling me that the Excess for a Theft claim was £500..I did it with the CIS and the Excess for all claims is only £50...CIS were also £70 cheaper and no requirement for CRIS registration
Hobbynut

PS.. Hobby go WIDE ( 2.5metres ) from 560 model and upwards but models below that are " normal " size

Apparently CIS are also very good at paying out in the event of an accident. Good to see an insurance company with some common sense for a change.

I have a particular interest in all this because apart from being the owner of a large Hobby I am also a fully qualified Driving Instructor of some 32 years now, on both Cars, LGV and cross country driving currently employed by the Ministry of Defence and involved in teaching the armed forces

Points to note:

We do not allow Hobby, Tabert, and Buccaneer Caravans on site.
We do not allow commercial vehicles on site i.e. transit vans, flat bedded vehicle.
All parties on site have to be family based consisting of parents and children.

Above statement was on an email sent to me by flamingoland north yorkshire, in reply to my asking for vacancies & prices, try it yourself.

That is completely unacceptable and i will be looking into that as it is one of the places that i would like to go. I cannot see them being able to get away with that in this day and age. It is discrimination.

It isnt an isolated incident. lots of sites both here, but apparantly more so abroad, ban Hobbies & caravans pulled by vans, especially transits, some motorhome owners will not have a transit based motorhome even, such is the feelings about Gypsies, pikeys, hawkers, call them what u will.
I dont have any axes to grind so these views arn't mine, im just reporting the facts.
I talked to an owner a couple of yrs ago who had been refused entry to a site, he came in to trade his hobby for a british, van he said he was sick of being refused entry.
As for discrimination, every shop, pub, or any business for that matter, has the right to refuse service.
Shops can put up speaker systems that only kids can hear, so as to make them move on, they dont get done for discrimination, so i doubt if any prosecutions would come from any complaints.
The travellers have picked what they consider the best units for the job, a ford transit & a Hobby caravan, i dont blame them.
But i dont think the hobby is better than a Bailey, externally a Bailey senator is beautiful, a hobby is an ugly lump, both have laminated roofs now, Bailey have a 6 yr water ingress guarantee, & hold their price well.
But thats only my thoughts & choice.

Back to insurance for a second, I notice some are saying they have no problem getting the 'caravan' insured, that's immaterial, what I'm talking about is the towing vehicle's insurance.

To tow an 8ft wide van with the wrong vehicle is an offence, I would say no way can an insurance company 'knowingly' insure you to do such a thing, this would be aiding and abetting....an offence in itself?.

Anyone care to test this by making their vehicle insurance company 'fully' aware of the type of use intended, and then get a written reply agreeing to it?

Point is if you do have an accident and a bone is broken, (any bone), then the police 'accident investigation unit' will be doing the investigation, not the local beat copper. Be assured these guys know the law inside and out and won't miss the width of your van, your insurance will then drop to at best the 'road traffic act' minimum.
Having been on the receiving end of the aftermath of one of these 'uninsured' accidents is I can tell you not pleasant, I certainly would not want it the other way round finding the costs out of my pocket...think on!!
