Dangers of time Shares

I recently got back from a weeks holiday in Cyprus, where we were invited to a time share meeting. It all seemed pretty above board but I din't sign up for anything, but I still have the opportunity to do so if i want. Can anybody tell me where you find out whether time share companies are on the level or not?

Or if anyone has had experiences of this at all.
