Glad someone else has same problem! I have just replaced the full throttle body (carburetter type thing) complete with Injector, made no difference,
replaced the ECU, the Aeriel ring and Ignition switch, the immobilizer, and the Crank sensor, MADE NO DIFFERENCE! I have a good spark, good compression, if I throw some fuel down its throat it will run until it feels like not starting again, there must be some genius out there who can help??????????

Pontious, You are going the hard way around this. If you have sparks, then immobiliser, keys and ecu are ok, and probably the engine relay ok. So it looks mechanical, fuel pump and any activating relay looks the most likely. If you have a pressure guage you could attach it to the fuel line and check for pressure with engine cranking. The fuel pump relay is driven from the ecu when engine is turning, so again a problem could (probably is) in the relay or the poor contacts around it (common fault).

Thanx Tonyh,
Lots of fuel comes from the return side of fuel unit when ign sw turned to pos 2 but I dont know about in cranking mode!, there is certainly nothing being injected in any mode, I have removed lid from fuel relay on bulkhead and it is immaculate and both relays can be seen to close and open with different functions of ign switch! I will connect a press gauge tomorrow and see what there is at cranking,
Thanks PONTIOUS

Pontious, when you tip fuel in does it continue to run and inject ok and run ok?. If it does not inject at all then it looks like ecu, if it injects poorly, then could be low fuel pressure.
BTW I use a cheap rotary tyre guage for pressure tests, think its about 18lbs normally, but google around for that.

HI Tonyh,
Have done check on fuel pressure and getting about 1 bar, whilst cranking the pump runs and gives 1 bar, but nothing through the Injector!!
on one of the Injector wires I have 12volts at cranking (straight from the fuel pump relay) the other wire goes back to pin 18 on the ECU and I have continuity (.o1 ohm) new discovery is that if I flash 12 volts across the Injector (of course with nothing connected to it) it clicks smartly and when re-connected to the wiring of the car lo and behold you can see fuel spray on cranking and the car starts!!! it was flashed with everything switched off and nothing came out of it!, this works every time!, I would swear that it was a sticking injector but I have two and they both do the same, To my mind it is as though pin 18 on the ECU lacks negative potential for some reason, But I am sure its not the ECU as i have tried another one! wonder what commands the negative output on pin 18? Should this go very low on cranking? It is now getting very deep,
Regards PONTIOUS.

Hi, the injector earthy end should be pulled low at various pulse widths by the ecu depending on demand by engine parameters. My experience with that engine is that with MAP signal low voltage or below range (low vacuum), the ecu will give a rich pulse, ie plenty of fuel. Could be that the MAP is giving a high reading therefore demanding fuel shut off.
Measure the voltage on the MAP sensor connector, you should get:-
0v supply
5v supply
1.3v approx engine running. sensor
think sensor should be 0v with no vacuum, 2v and it will cut off the fuel.
Put a tube on the MAP and suck HARD on it and obseve sensor voltage.
Tony.

HI TONYH
All that checks out as you say it should, have even changed the MAP sensor but nothing makes a s.... of difference!!! wonder if the original Injector was kaput and I have replaced it with another kaput one? wonder if these injectors are prone to giving trouble?
Cheers PONTIOUS.

If you can pull the earthy end of injector lead down to zero and fuel gushes in, then I would say injector is ok. Maybe unplug oxy sensor and check results, maybe get mobile tune-up guy to read ecu, maybe check for injector pulses out of ecu also check ecu expected dc voltages at plug contacts. Must agree its rather a difficult one. I can post you ecu pinout voltage chart if you want one.

THANKS TONEH,
That didnt make any difference, Just been and got new oxy sensor just in case and fitted it but no different! the fault has got worse over the last week and now wont start at all if it has stood for ten mins, unless you flash 12 v across injector! I have had complete wiring loom out from engine compartment and removed all tape, inspected wires one by one, carried out continuity tests to all wires and plugs, re taped and re-fitted but no change!!
there is nowt left to replace apart from engine but it cant be that! yes a pinout of the ECU would be of great help, at least I can investigate further,

Latest on Jinx Punto!!!,
Thank You TONEH for ECU pinout and Diagnostics, All checked out ok, everything was present and correct, one of the kids pointed out that the problem has been worse since the new throttle body/Injector had been fitted!, she had a point! I fitted the old Injector to the new throttle body and it started!!! and it has started ever since! every time, is this fluke or what? I am sure time will tell!!
Will keep you all posted, PONTIOUS.

Hi Pontious, Good to hear you have a result. The self inflicted faults are always the hardest to cure!.

i had the same problem with my 1997 60s it would start sometimes and sometimes it was just turning over, i changed the big white control relay on the bulk head under the bonnet it cured the problem straight away.

I've had exactly the same problem with my W reg 1.9 diesel, as well as the engine cutting out whilst in low gear / turning corners, and finally at 50mph last week; it's at a FIAT dealers who reckon it's the fuel pump.................... I hope they're right as I'm fed up of being towed home too.
