hi the relay everyone is talking about is under the bonnet, look to the back of the air filter and you will see a small plastic cover with a couple of screws in it, take out the screws and you will see the the infamous relay which controls the the fuel pump. the best way to check if it is the relay is: when your car won`t start sit in the drivers seat and turn your ignition on but don`t turn the engine over, if you listen very carefully you should be able to hear a faint hum from the fuel pump for a couple of seconds, fuel pump is located under the back seat on most models, so you could lift up your back seat and switch your ignition on to hear it better, if you are getting a clicking noise it is usually dirty or loose battery connections or the live cable to the starter motor is not tight enough.

Cheers for that will check again tomoro, with regards the clicking it seems to be coming from lower right side of the steering column, i guess there is a fuse/relay box there but too dark to tell at present. As for the humm of the fuel pump, is it clearly audible or a very faint noise?, i think i hear something but not clearly and it is not something you usually do so it could just be the normal electrics hum i am hearing.Don't think it could be battery terminals or starter motor cable as they have been replaced earlier this year and fault was apparent prior to this and after.Appreciate your replies, sorry for the daft questions!!!!!

the hum is quite faint and stops after a couple of seconds, if you are not sure lift up the back seat as it will be louder, as for the clicking is it when you are trying to start the car or when the car is moving? if you are standing in front of the car the starter motor is located to right side of the engine, and a loose power cable to it will cause clicking when trying to start, just because it has been replaced dosn`t mean it has been done properly!

hey guys, sorry have not posted for a while but the problenm has re-emerged. Last time it just sorted itself out after I jacked up the front of the car..??
Recently it has been ok after a bunp start, but now the clicking is back. with the ignition on but not trying to start: the fuel pump seems to be pumping of trying and the relay is clicking madly, warning light for ecu comes on and no noise from the solenoid.
will next try to see if the starter/solenoid are faulty.
