this does sound like the relay is playing up, if you lift up the bonnet and look to the back of the air filter you will see a black plastic cover with two large phillips screws in, remove the cover and you will be looking at the relay they seem to vary in colour red, white or black usually. these relays give the impression that the fuel pump is not working as they supply power to it but when they are playing up the electrics work apart from the fuel pump. these relays should have been fitted inside the car as they are easily damaged by the elements so it is a design fault by fiat, pop down to your local scrapyard and grab a couple of them for a pound or two as new ones cost about 25 quid from fiat.

hi, Ive just recently changed head gasket on a R reg fiat punto 1.2 16v sporting. The car now refuses to start! I have checked all basics like spark plugs/leads and fuel components but the battery was off for a week so could this be linked to the white relay/ECU needing to be reset? how is this done?

First check that the key code light goes off. Then check that the valve timing is ok, also check that the crankshaft toothed wheel is not put on 180 deg out. CPS connected ok?. is there sparks?.

hi an easy mistake that is made when putting it all back together is the lower fanbelt pulley wheel, take out the three bolts and check to make sure you have put it on correctly, there is a tiny locating pin which has to be located in the small hole on the pulley wheel, if this is not located properly you will never start your car.

51 plate punto not starting!!!!!Have had car for over a year only 40k miles. Car at first occasionally failed to start, AA came out after a 45 minute wait and it started first time, he said common fault and probably will not appear on any diags, get used to it. Problem is now getting more frequent, at first, waiting 30 minutes or so and trying again worked but now it seems only way to get it running is a bump start and this works every time. This must mean i have fuel and spark, so WHY won't it start from stationary. Weather doesn't appear to be a factor as fault occurs in wet and dry conditions. Have a new battery fitted three weeks ago but FSA (fault still apparent). Must stress fault is not always there but now appears maybe once/twice a week. Please help

My R reg fiat punto 1.2 16valve sporting has a metal brake lines running down the under side of car right up to the section where they are attached to the axle beam by plastic clips. As both lines (left/right) head towards appropriate side there is a silver hex shaped metal thing that the pipe goes in/out of then carries on to rear drums. There is One each side and they to are clipped to the rear axle. Any one no what they are called??

when your car decides not to start put your key in the ignition and turn it until your battery light comes on, you should hear a faint hum for a second or two, this hum is from your fuel pump at the rear of the car. if this cannot be heard then your control relay is playing up, this is located under the bonnet at the rear of the air filter under a plastic cover secured by two screws, many people on this forum have had problems with this relay as it is a design fault. the symptoms of this are exactly what you are saying: car runs great for weeks then all of a sudden nothing, pop to your local scrapyard and pick up a couple of these relays and you`ll be sorted.

hi neal w: have you tried changing your spark plugs? buy some champion eon plugs they are expensive but work really well. just because you have a spark dosn`t mean they are ok, your car will be difficult to start with bad plugs.

the relay is the largest one there, if you remove the cover you will see a squarish coloured box, when you remove it you will see lots of pins on the bottom of it, there have been reports of varying colours for this relay: red, white and black so it could be any of these colours but you really can`t miss it. take off the small black cover next to the air filter it is held on by two large philips screws

I have a 2002 Punto 1.2 Active Sport. I've had it for 5 yrs and never had a problem with it starting until now! I used it Sunday morn no prob then Sun night it wouldn't start. The dashboard lights come on fine when I initially turn the key but then it tries very briefly to start but dies a death. The clock resets to 00.00. The headlights, indicators, alarm system etc work but engine won't. I know nothing about engines. Does anyone know what it may be. It was serviced 2 months ago and spark plugs changed then.
